Doom 3 is my favorite so far because goddamn that Event Horizon mod for it is awesome.
Looking forward to Doom 2016 though. If nothing else, it looks like it will be a HELL OF A GOOD TIME.

Anyone? Anyone?
Damn. Frosty reception y'all.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Well, apparently the multiplayer... kinda suffers from an identity crisis, some would say.
It is precisely because it never cared, that people do care.  It's something which it's lacking, because that which it has, it has lackluster of.

Well this is rather suspicious.

I was suspicious of the lack of review copies myself, but picked up the game regardless.  If you're a fan of the frantic, fast-paced strafe style shooting of the original two games, then the new Doom is right up your alley.  This game is all kinds of amazing so far.  I'm about 4 hours in.

Honestly im beginning to think it was the right idea, considering it eschews lots of the casualized shit most modern shooters do and prefers to instead be a hybrid of new+old, but with more emphasis on the old.

The gameplay emphasizes movement above all else, which is opposed to modern shooter philosophy which is slow and steady, take cover and pick off enemies one by one, taking a breather if your health runs low to let it regen.

Doom 4 has no regenning health so you have to hunt for health pickups and utilize the glory kills. It has you look for key cards to open doors in large winding stages, and it's monster encounters are all about frantically staying on the move, since enemies hunt you down. I can see the casual CoD kiddie or reviewer calling this game too hard or unfair, and thats besides all the optional shit (thats on by default) like a compass, objective markers, and a glow that highlights stunned enemies for takedowns. All of which can be toggled off.

overall, as far as the single player goes, it's pretty good. Everything Duke Nukem Forever probably should have been as far as gameplay goes.

Yeah but DNF had Duke picking up a turd and saying, "Eww, what am I doing?" and nothing can beat that.

I'm super excited for DOOM because everybody I know is getting a huge boner over it. I thought of grabbing it today but I'm going on vacation in a few days so I suppose I'll wait.
Oh yeah, and also:

Just beat this game on Ultra-Violence, got all of the collectibles and gun mastery upgrades, etc. I think I'm going to try for a platinum on this one. I've only gotten 5 platinum trophies, and they're all on games I love and have goals that are reasonable, and this one is both.

This game is incredible. They have really great combat mechanics (always preferred run-and-gun to cover-based), and although there's a ton of stuff to find and equipment to upgrade in the game, it rarely gets tedious...and when it does, it's still pretty fun.

The one gripe I have is with the way the levels will often prevent you from backtracking. Especially on parts where it could've been easily changed. Like one stage about halfway through the game, I cleared out the last mob before the exit, but couldn't go back because the door that locks you into the fight stays locked. What purpose does this serve? Just a small gripe, though, because it was actually pretty fun going back through levels to grab what I missed the first time.

(My mind is still blown that we received new Wolfenstein and Doom games in the last couple years and they both turned out to be excellent. Stuff like this never happens.)
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

Excellent, huh?  I have gotten more excited for the new Doom with the generally favorable reception it's gotten, although I still don't like the over-the-top gore.  Maybe I'll get a PS4 this year after all.
