https://mynintendonews.com/2016/12/21/us-castlevania-dracula-x-coming-to-new-nintendo-3ds-virtual-console-tomorrow/

Not sure if I will bother with this since I have it on Wii U, but Dracula X is coming to New 3DS.  Nice to see Castlevania games continue to roll out.  Even if they don't make new CV games for a while, there's always a little throwback to look forward to.

Now the real Virtual Console thing I want to figure out is if they'll ever both release the DS Castlevania games to Wii U.  Been wanting to play those on a big screen for a while now.  But alas, with the Switch coming out and Wii U about to die, will they bother??  Would it even make sense for them to appear on a Switch virtual console?  Getting a little nervous..

Oh, and also waiting for Haunted Castle to come out on PS4.  Haha, that'll be my first stab at playing that game legally ^_^.

Oh hey, it even looks like it will be the SNES port. Haven't seen that one around in a long time! It's also my favorite version of the game, up until that final "fight while balanced on various poles Crouching-Tiger-Hidden-Dragon-style" Dracula boss fight, at any rate.

Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

I don't want to think about how expensive that import is these days if you wanted it brand-new. *shudders*

yep, but i'm not sure if that would truly count as "legal" to play it on a system it is not licensed to play on.  hmm, i know for sure they're releasing that ps2 version on ps4, but i'd better check to make sure they'll release it in the west.  at any rate, it'll be great to play it legitimately.

Hell, wouldn't that be something. Still haven't given that one a proper play through since I find arcade emulators are a major pain in the ass to use.

Oh, looks like it was released in Japan already.  I'll guess they won't bother let us buy it in North America (unless you do fancy account tricks).  Lame.

You may not be able to get a brand new one anyway, it's a rare game.
There are some repaired PAL versions (for those who have Universal Adapters) going for about 50-60 AUD on Ebay. That's the cheapest I've seen it.

The reason I love this game but won't buy it = Only on Nintendo NEW 3DS...
Absolute bollocks that those of us with XL's or older can't play it.

Might have to give the PS4 Haunted Castle a whirl; I hope it emulates better than on the PS2 release. Anyone know the price so I know what kinda card to buy?

Edit: Turns out I still had currency in my Japanese PSN account, so I signed in with my PS4 and got the game with little fuss (besides trying to remember my password). Seems to emulate the game very nicely as it's part of the Arcade Archives series, and I was able to tinker around in the menu a bit to turn off pixel softening and stretch the image horizontally a bit (the default is completely square pixels, which makes for a funny aspect ratio).

I don't know what any of the game config options do and I didn't mess around with them, but you seem to have unlimited continues; normally in a ROM played on MAME, you can rack up about three or four continues, and they just add extra bars to your life meter, but once that's out, it's game over, start anew; however, in this PS4 version, once that's run out, you're brought to a PS4-specific game over screen which says "Press Option button to continue or Jump button to quit" or something like that, and I was able to continue indefinitely, it would seem—I would just have to start at the beginning of whatever stage I was on. So that's cool AND I MAY FINALLY BE ABLE TO BEAT THIS GAME BECAUSE OF IT.

hopefully it's not the difficult version of haunted castle.  perhaps there are some dipswitches you can mess with...
as for dracula x, it's funny how prolific a game can become when you initially deny the US release.

Hey, you know what needs to stop being a thing?

Releasing GBA Castlevania games (for a PORTABLE console) on the Wii eShop but never releasing them on the 3DS eShop (on a PORTABLE console).

Absolutely 100% agree.

You know what else? Having to buy the same game 5 times to play on each console you own i.e. Nintendo Financial Strategy 101

Worst part is that GBA emulation on 3DS is pretty solid and NES emulation is better than the VC.

Nintendo: fluffy and candy coated on the outside, but secretly blood-sucking vampires on the inside.
