Part 1 NOCTURNAL OPS. By Alan Matthews "Listen to them, the children of the night, what sweet music they make." Vlad Tepes (Dracula) It's 6 o' clock in the evening and for me my day is just beginning. Once again I get up and ready for my job, once again I contemplate throwing that alarm clock across the room. Who am I you ask? I'm police Commander Virgil Barren. I live in Coast City off the West side of the U.S. Never heard of Coast City? I wouldn't expect you to have, for it doesn't exist in your time. Coast City was created by accident, actually it began as an idea to populate regions around San Diegos' ports, to help International commerce. Well, like all big ideas it shifted into a commercial extravaganza, before we new it McDonalds and every greasy franchise had a stake in this project. Now what was meant to be a shipping structure constructed off the west coast, has turned into the vast Metropolis we lovingly call, Coast City. Now, a lot of people think that policing the newest most modern city in the world must be pretty easy. They say that "Crime hasn't had a chance to get a strong foothold on this place." Then I tell them "Where do you think they got the money to build everything." That pretty much shuts them up. No, policing a City like this isn't the easiest of tasks. You see I'm not just a cop, I don't just catch normal everyday criminals. I'm captain of Nocturnal Operations, or NOC. OPS. for short, and for you to truly understand what we do I'm going to have to give you some background. Imagine this, December 31, 1999. A bunch of Doomsday freakos decide that if god wasn't going to end our lives that they would contribute to our demise. Well for most of the world their plan didn't get very far, but as for a good chunk of Seattle Washington they didn't get off quite as easily. Some how the cult let loose a toxin, which when put into direct contact with a human caused a quick and horrible death. Slowly the death rate in Seattle tapered off ,and life began to go back to normal. But about a year later, strange occurrences began popping up around the city. Stories of bodies being found drained of blood, and of course the word vampire was brought up more than a few times. Later it turned out that some of the toxins let loose mutated and in turn another small portion of Seattle became a hunting ground for these creatures which were once people. What came next? Well as you could probably guess they migrated here. I mean why not, a nice new city, plenty of unsuspecting victims, and when you have your fangs in some bureaucrats ass you can gain a lot of power. Which brings me back to my original tale. So now it's 2010, and I guess you've got it by now, my team and I hunt vampires for the CCPD, plain and simple. Once I get up everyday I have to be very careful. When you do what I do just taking a sip of coffee and watching the news on the holoscreen in my apartment is just enough opening for one of those bastards to come in and drain me before I know it. Sometimes on my way to work I walk the crowded night streets wearing my trench coat as to not reveal my uniform and I'll see one. He or she will notice me too, well Christ it's not like I'm not on the news ever, but I'll let it go it's not worth the civilian casualties. I just give them a hard stare and a smile assuring them that I'll be shoving my assault rifle down their throat soon enough. Once I get to work I'm always greeted by Sandra the secretary, the very very lovely secretary. I pass the retinal scan and walk right in. The main reason we have a retinal scan is the fact that when someone is "reborn" as we like to call it the veins in their eyes change and we don't want any special guests sneaking in and getting us from the inside. I remember one incident when we first installed the scan, one of our Sergeants got infected and tried to pass the scan, and the electroshock counter measure kicked into place blowing his head completely off. Sandra was surprised to say the least. In my office I never fail to see the other nine members of my team doing something unprofessional, like Justo the guy who really likes videogames, always standing around the water cooler asking various associates " What disc are you on, in Final Fantasy 12?" Or Scud the guy who likes to " Blow stuff up." tinkering with some new kind of bomb. They think that just because we're in some special division of the department that we can do whatever we want. Usually when I sit at my cluttered desk I brush the various files out of the way. Normally I get an E-mail or two from my informants. Most of my informants are people who have been used by the vampire cartels somehow and are seeking revenge. Most of the time when we follow up their leads they end up dead the next day. Strange. Yet all too expected. None of my informants has been as useful as Alucard. Alucard is a vampire himself, yet he's not of the same breed as these current killers. Alucard is a 500 year old “real vampire." and he fears no retribution from the others, due to the fact that none of them match his power. Did I mention that he was quite an experienced swordsman. Alucard sees this "new breed" to be an unnatural occurrence, which is why he watches and helps. I truly hope to never have to face that man in combat, for I would surely fail to match the skill of one such as he. As for the others, they are childs play. As I checked my mail I noticed a message from Alucard. It stated. My friend, there have been many strange things going on over at the bar known as the "Relic", I'll meet you there at 1 A.M. Your Friend, Alucard. Well I'm glad he's my friend. Right now it's about 10. " Come on you lazy fucks lets get ready we have a job to do" I yelled. Yeah everybody moved really quick. Am I going to have to shoot one of them to get them going? We arrived outside of the small worn down club about 12:50 A.M. Alucard was already there, I saw his long white hair and as usual his expensive suit. I also notice that he had a long ancient sword slung over his shoulder. I could see the swords hilt, decorated with emerald jewels, all of them placed firmly into a silver plated handle. Very impressive. " I will be joining you this evening." Alucard stated. " Your help will be most welcomed." I replied. Once inside the club everyone there knew what we wanted. The music continued but everyone stopped dancing. This was one of those raves, where everyone dressed up, we couldn't tell the Vamps from the humans. I grabbed my shotgun from under my trench coat and prepared myself. " I just want Azeroth." Alucard yelled. Everyone looked around in confusion as I yelled out, " If you fucking vamps don't show yourselves were going to start wasting people until someone comes forward!" Right them under the disco ball a man wearing a tan suit and tie comparable with Alucards’ in quality, stepped in between the onlooking crowds who were shitting their pants right about now. I really didn’t blame them. The man pointed to us as two vamps jumped from the railing above to attack us. Yet they were too late. I offed one with a single shotgun shell cutting him in half, and Justo threw the other to the ground and shot him in the face. These “new breed” were easier to kill than the legendary vampires I read about as a child, although Alucards skill matches those rumored to be the most powerful throughout the ages. Then during the disruption Alucard and the man in the suit, whom I assumed was Azeroth began to sword fight, but it ended all to quickly as Alucard proved his power to us and pointed out his hand releasing a ball of fire upon Azeroth causing him to burn and very quickly. The vampires body quickly melted and Alucard sheathed his sword and walked out the door. "What was the deal with that ?" I questioned Alucard stepping out of the club. " He was a real one like me." Alucard stated. " I knew him a long time ago." Alucard began to walk away as he turned around. "He owed me money, and when people fail to pay me back for 300 years it tends to make me somewhat, unhappy. Thank you for your assistance gentlemen." And he was gone. I looked around at my troops. We were all kind of confused about our involvement with a vengeful vampire, and with that we walked towards our cars. We go through things similar to this everyday, and it never seems to get better. Reports of drainings happen all the time, and although the rate of these events are going slowly down it’s not going fast enough. Sometimes I wish we could wipe this city off the face of the earth, but then I think to myself. “ This is home Azel, and you have a job to do.” Then it dawns on me that my crew and I are the only ones trying to stop this plague, and although we’re small in numbers we’re still giving it our best shot. Then when that day comes when I settle down and want a family, I wont have to worry about the safety of the ones I love, and that’s what makes my future worth while. It was nearly 4AM before I got home. I was truly exhausted from the events of the night. Besides Alucard dealing with his past financial liabilities we shot down three other vamps tonight just on our routeen stops, tiring indeed. Tonight I thought about Alucard and the fact that if he’s real then perhaps all those stories told in literature of the past, perhaps are true? Maybe I’ll have a chance to ask Alucard if Count Dracula is real or not. Doubtfull. Alucard has more important things to do than to tell me fairytales about vampires. Although I do believe there is something inside of me that doesn’t fully trust Alucard anyway. Something saying that it’s wrong to associate with that man. It’s sort of a gut instinct,or something to that effect I haven’t really figured it out yet All I know is that there is no beast without cruelty and Alucard has the power of a hundred beasts so where is all the cruelty. Too much thinking for too long of a night . I need to get some sleep. I’ll try to figure this out in the morning. And that is a day in the life of Captain Virgil Barren. To Be Continued......
