Title: The Ultimate Off-Topic
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on January 11, 2016, 08:18:54 PM
What the hell did New Coke taste like? Was it really as bad as the reputation suggests?

I was born in 1989, and so I completely missed that train of disaster, but seeing as I don't exactly like Coca Cola, I probably would have preferred New Coke.

Someone who knows should throw some learnin' at this topic.

It tasted like bad marketing, from what I've heard.

It just has an ashy/ metallic taste imo.

I don't think it was terrible, but more like the taste of ashy scotch and coke without the scotch.

I still need to see that one in real life. Is that a USA only thing?

New Coke USA only? No idea, but I'm guessing no.

In Australia we got Coke "Life" which came in olive/ money green cans/ packaging, that's the one I'm talking about.

The ultimate off-topic eh? Does this mean we throw whatever shit hits the fan and see what develops?  ;D

Never tried New Coke. Kinda passed that one though not by choice. I was young then... Although I do like Cherry Cola alongside with the original Coca Cola. I don't ever have the diet stuff. That shit's got aspartame and that stuff's toxic to the human body. My bro can't have any Aspartame without getting a severe headache. Coke Zero (if I'm not mistaken) also contains Aspartame. I don't touch that stuff either.

I love Cherry Coke and Vanilla Coke, if we're talking about coke variants.

Oh, man.

This.

Coke. It's like... to me, it's the damn greatest drink in the world. Like, seriously. There is nothing more soothing than drinking an ice cold coke. I'm not the biggest fan of Pepsi, and I can only drink it if it's ice ICE cold, but ugh. That syrup-y feel of Pepsi is just nasty to me.

I'm a soda addict. I won't lie about that. I can pretty much tell soda apart just from the smell of it. I'm at the point where I can even tell the difference between generic sodas (i.e. Shasta, Big K, Vibe, Fiesta, etc.). I have a problem.

That being said, though. I'm also curious as to what New Coke was like.

Even Coca-Cola uses a syrup recipe. But it does taste better then Pepsi. I'll drink Pepsi if there's nothing else, but I'm a Coke guy through & through.

Here's the jest of the Coca-Cola recipe changes throughout the years;

Never remember New Coke...I grew up drinking generic soda. Ugh. Speaking of generics, Rocky Top was okay, so long as it wasn't the cola flavor. Generic cola is the worst, no matter what brand. Except Wolf Cola.  ;D

I do remember Crystal Pepsi, though. It wasn't bad, just weird. Not sure if it tasted different, or if the (lack of) color made it just seem different. At least it was better than Pepsi Blue. Yuck.

While we're on the subject - do you guys like dr. Pepper?
I bought it once just to taste it (it isn't popular in my country) and wanted to puke. It tastes like flavoured sugar. But I guess that's how most drinks in America are, aren't they?

Also, bud beer. Decided to try it while I was in America to see if it really tastes like piss as they say. Found out that it doesn't. It just tastes like soda. What's with you Americans and your addiction to sweetness?

@X-tube Good advice

Pepsi blue is slightly sweetened water, I never understood it.

From what I understood Dr. Pepper was contemporary Saspirilla.
Dr Pepper has a PHD, Mr Coke is just a regular guy.

Vanilla or Regular coke (normal or frozen) reigns supreme imo.
Second comes Coke/ Diet Coke with Lime. I fucking hate DC, but the one with like tastes nice.

Pepsi Max> Pepsi imo
Konami BOD are watching this thread getting high saying to each other "Don't worry, there's no Castlevania.."

I'm aware that it does, but with Pepsi I can outright just feel the syrup when I drink it. I don't ever feel that when I drink Coke.

I have the craving every now and then. I don't find the drink to be offensive in any way. I also go for the occasional Mountain Dew Voltage. That drink has far more sugar then either Dr. Pepper or Coke.

I can't stand Dr Pepper. It doesn't taste like a soda should, to me.

My favorite drink is Diet 7UP, but in light of the damage that soda has been doing to my teeth over my short life (I DRINK A LOT OF SODA), I've started cutting back on Soda and I've just taken up mead instead if I don't have to be driving, and chocolate milk when I DO have to drive. Gatorade/Powerade is an occasional treat for me.

I miss drinking soda all the time.

As well as general health excess consumption of sugar can cause diabetes.

If the craving returns maybe try to switch to carbonated mineral water instead?

I enjoy at least one daily carbonated beverage but I try to avoid drinking soda more than once per day.

In fact I find coke, pepsi and the like probably help with digestion more than anything. While drinking something heavy and uncarbonated after a meal doesn't really agree with me.

No kidding. Fortunately, mead might actually be a rare alcoholic beverage that makes one healthier. (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-sweden-mead-idUSKBN0OQ17Y20150610)

Pepsi, Dr.Pepper, and Mountain Dew are like the holy trinity for me right now. Been drinking way too much pop lately (at least 20oz a day), since I had to stop weightlifting for a couple months due to an injury. My diet and motivation both go to crap when I'm not exercising, and that usually means switching over from water to pop.

I wonder if by being an uber heretic and mixing Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Dr Pepper, I might make a reasonable facsimile to New Coke.

The more I talk about New Coke the more I want to try something like it.

Caffeine is a diuretic.

Therefore, the best analogy I can use is mixing Coke and Pepsi like mixing 2pac and Biggie.
What happens = Runnin'
If things go bad = dumpin'

That is all.

Are you kidding? I was far younger back in the day and certain things I would do filled me to the brim with Nostalgia, and I would always look forward to those times. Sadly that's not the case anymore. So if I were you, I'd treasure any and all times you feel nostalgic, and hold onto them as best you can. Unlike rose-tinted glasses, nostalgia isn't a bad thing as it comes from a positive source within you. And it's true because you feel good from such a feeling.

Unfortunately, we are approaching that point where the pop culture industry is beginning to realize that the 80's Nostalgia Demographic that they've been pandering too is beginning to age out of the target area... which means us 1990's kids are next on the list. You can start to see it happening already.

I don't relish the idea of my childhood being repackaged and horribly reinterpreted by suits older than me who don't get why we loved this stuff in the first place, which is exactly what happened with the Jem and the Holograms movie (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/jem_and_the_holograms_2015/?search=jem%20and%20the%20holograms) for anyone who ever loved the original. Seriously. It's gonna happen to us, fellow 90's kids.

Look forward to that (he said, voice dripping with venomous sarcasm).

Reception

Box office
The film was released in North America on October 23, 2015, alongside The Last Witch Hunter, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, and Rock the Kasbah, along with the wide release of Steve Jobs. It was originally projected to gross $5 million in its opening weekend, but after only grossing $34,000 during its Thursday night previews ($36 per theater average), projections were lowered to $3 million.[31] It ultimately opened fifteenth at the box office with $1.4 million, the worst opening of 2015 and the fourth worst opening ever for a film playing in more than 2,000 theaters.[32][33] On November 10, 2015, just over two weeks after it premiered, Universal removed the film from theaters entirely, after grossing just $2.2 million. Jason Guerrasio of Business Insider described the pull from theaters as "an unheard of move for a movie that was in theaters nationwide."[34]

The film's international roll-out began on October 22, where it debuted to a fourth-place finish in Slovenia. It debuted in 9 screens and had a weekend gross of $2,064. The movie's total is $3,046. In its second weekend the film dropped 37% to finish at 5th place with $1,297. Its third week resulted in a steep 84% decline to $210. It’s three-week total is $6,886.[35]

The film opened in Croatia on October 29, where it debuted in fifth-place with $1,421 from 11 screens. The film dropped over 40% in its second week with $870 from 7 screens, but the third week saw its screen count increase to 13 and it suffered a scant 8% decline to end the weekend with $801. The film’s three-week total was $3,744.

The film opened in Iceland a day later, where it made $1,197 on opening weekend from 6 screens. The film retained its screen count for the next week, seeing a 41% drop to end with $698. The following week saw the film take in $195 from 1 screen, a substantial drop of 72%. Its three week-total was $2,862.

The film opened in Norway on November 6. It placed number four at the box office with $14,764 from 62 screens. Its two-week total was $20,046.

The film opened in Singapore on November 26 where it grossed $9,311 from 8 screens for a 13th-place finish.

Release date for parts of Europe is December, and the UK release will be in February 2016.

As of 30 December 2015, the film grossed $142,526 internationally, bringing the worldwide gross to $2.3 million.[36]

Critical response[edit]
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 19% based on 57 reviews; the average rating is 3.5/10. The site's consensus reads, "Jem and the Holograms ignores its source material's goofy charm in favor of bland by-the-numbers drama."[37] Metacritic gives the film a score of 42 out of 100, based on 15 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[38] On CinemaScore, audiences gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale.[39] Geoff Berkshire of Variety praised Peeples' performance as Jem, noting that she "keeps the film watchable", as well as Lewis as "a nonsensical bitch-on-wheels caricature with offbeat line readings and live-wire energy", and noted that "a generally unremarkable tech package — cinematography, sound, costuming & makeup, etc. — at least provides a modest showcase for costume designer Soyon An, makeup head Mary Klimek and hairstylist Vanessa Price, who come the closest to channeling the vibrant spirit of the Jem cartoons that originally made fans fall in love."[2]

That being said, the fact that it was made for $5 million in today's money, got one commercial, no posters or press, and generally tried not to exist says the studio didn't care whether it succeeded or not and it got made presumably because the producer lost a bet or owed a favor and wanted to keep losses to a minimum.

It's not even about the stuff the cartoon was about: it's the 1990's Josie and the Pussycats film minus the spoof elements and Alan Cummings.

In short: the worst teen film imaginable.

By all accounts, the Jem and the Holograms movie had as much to do with the show than this very topic.
