Title: Anime & Manga Discussion Thread
Post by: Lelygax on August 11, 2013, 05:35:48 PM
Lets talk about anime and manga!  ;D

This topic is for anything anime/manga-related, feel free to post about your favorite ones, post news, share your insights about some new series that you found recently and liked, or anything else.

There is some great news for Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru (My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong as I Expected) fans like me (anyone?)

やはり俺の青春ラブコメはまちがっている。OVA PV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIQxOGkD-S8#ws)

Rondo's Robe put online a promotional video of the OVA of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru).

This Blu-ray will come in a limited edition of the game for PlayStation Vita, called Yahari Game demo Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru (Even Though It’s a Game, My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong as I Expected) in September, 19.

Been getting back into Hellsing, my 2nd favorite manga and favorite OVA.

If you’re in the US you can see several of the OVA episodes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdxoyMfdW5c#noexternalembed-ws) and the whole TV series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TxnL5VYgoY#noexternalembed), uploaded officially by Funimation on youtube. Though the vast majority of both are only available in their subtitled form this way, a shame considering the English dub cast is often cited as one of the best. Well, you can judge for yourself in those links if you're in the US.

I also watched the Ghost in the Shell movie for the first time (read the manga a while back) and now watching the GITS: Stand Alone Complex tv series. They’re both strictly OK so far imo. Pretty funny that the bad Latin (the repeated line of "Aeria Gloris") in the SAC opening song translates out to something like "Sister in-law's lofty things" when I believe it's supposed to mean something like "Heavenly Glory"

I wouldn’t consider myself an anime fan per se. I find it’s often even more difficult to get to the good stuff than in other media, and I’m still haunted (not really) by memories of being an 11 year old weeaboo.

I did love Outlaw Star/Gundam Wing/Blue Submarine No. 6/Gundam 08th MS Team/Sailor Moon/Ronin Warriors/Pokemon/Dragon Ball Z and the little I saw of Slayers and Dominion Tank Police as a kid. But I find only a handful of those still watchable these days. (Outlaws forever!) I’m a huge fan of the Berserk manga, which I consider the most moving book I’ve ever read. And I hope it gets a satisfying conclusion before the author dies like his inspiration (a woman who wrote the longest continuous series of fantasy novels ever recorded, 1 a month or so iirc, until her death) did. Haven’t seen the new OVAs as yet though.

Good that you mentioned this, going to fix that since I meant this too, but since I rarely read manga I tend to forget about them.

edit: fixed, feel free to talk about manga too.

oh man where do I start? As for manga I'v been reading pokemon adventures on and off and as for anime well I got sick of seeing the new stuff which seemed to be alot of ecchi crap so I was thinking other not so pleasant things about this ecchi crap so I've been watching this

Fist Of The North Star Opening Ver. 1 (Creditless) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bCyf1AwOJ8#)

but then I found an article by accident and now I've been hooked on this

Wow, you honored the first page with Hokuto no Ken. :P

Yeah, Shingeki no Kyojin seems to be that main topic everywhere on the internet, I've watched 2 episodes and need to watch the rest. They even made a parody of it because of our protests on Brazil a month ago:

I've been chipping away at Fist of the North Star for the past few years since Discotek has released the entire original series. The movie rocks my dick, but the TV show feels too much like a "bad guy of the week" episodic show where each episode kind of blends together in my mind because there's little variance.

I recently saw Angel Cop for the first time, English dubbed. SOOOOO MUUUCH PROFANITY in it, and the violence is super grotesque and elaborate. Awesome designs, cool animation, weird story (originally having the Jews as the bad guys until they changed it to an American corporation), and I wish I had it on DVD or Blu-ray.

Moments like this that make me wants my privace back (aka a room with door, preferable lockable), since my PC is on my mom's room and my "door" is a curtain, rarely I can see NSFW material.

I live at home as well, and my sister's bedroom is across the hall. Extremely NSFW stuff I have to watch when she's either away, or when it's late and I have the volume real low.

But the thing is, I don't have a proper room; I'm in the library where I have bookshelves as walls between me and the hall and an open doorway. So there's not a whole lotta privacy, otherwise I'd lock the door and plug my headphones into the TV. :p

I like a lot of 90's Anime. While it's not 90's I watched one called Stiens Gate and was very impressed with it and recommend it to anyone who hasn't watched it.

I haven't been watching a lot of anime lately.
The most recent ones that I've watched were Uta no Prince-sama 2 and Polar Bear Cafe (I can suggest it to you guys since it is a fun comedy starring animals).
I am considering if I should watch Brothers Conflict, maybe when the entire season is done...
Yup, I am in a comedy and reverse harem mood right now. Oh and I choose shows by their voice actors.  ;)

People have suggested Psycho Pass.
Attack on Titan is getting a lot of rave, but I am not in the mood for those stories.

As for manga, I am eagerly awaiting every new chapter of Kuroshitsuji.
Oh and a lot of yaoi manga. I really love Crimson Spell and Finder. These are also still ongoing.

Back when I was a kid I had no idea what anime was nor why it was called that. I only knew it was just another animated show on TV that I would sit down and watch during Saturday mornings. Astroboy was one of them. Even on repeats I was still tuned to it. Now I have the entire 80's Astroboy box set as well as the original 60's box set 1 of 2. Don't know where I'm going to find 2 though...

Another anime I watched that's even more obscure was Kagaku Kyūjo Tai Tekunoboijā?, Scientific Rescue Team TechnoVoyager. Or as we knew it here; Thunderbirds 2086. Sadly there was only one season's worth of episodes, 24 to be exact but only 18 were ever shown.

From that point-on I wouldn't know what anime was until I came across it in the early 90's. Sailor Moon was that re-introduction for me. Not only into anime once more, but also into drawing anime because of it. I have found over the years that the anime style has started to become a little generic and/or very sharp-looking. I'm a fan of the more classic anime where look and forms of characters have more round lines then hard angular edges. Some other classic anime that I've also sat down and watched are The Dirty Pair and just recently You're Under Arrest! I also own the entire Project A-ko series as those are funny as hell to watch, and they are a comedy spoof on all that was popular back in the day. Guyver was another series that I viewed and I find that it's a shame they never completed the whole series. I own the new series which is actually more in line with the original manga then the other was, but is still largely unfinished. The anime 86' movie Guyver: Out of Control is also an interesting unique take on the Guyver story, although I think the artists and writers had a little too much time on their hands when they did up Valkyria's bonding with the damaged Guyver unit 2 (Then scene looks like it belongs in a hentai tentacle rape fest even though you see she's enjoying it and everyone around her has front row seats :P).

You should watch Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko (The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat) its very good and you will laugh a lot. No, its not focused in ecchi and doesnt is a hentai, the hentai in the title is hentai as in pervert. Here is the OP (I choose shows by their OP if I never watched them):

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko OP 1 "Fantastic Future" on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/64483060)

They silenced all OPs from this anime on youtube, so I posted a video from vimeo.

On the contrary, for me, it's better ecchi than H because to insinuate is sometimes better than showing. Maybe it's something only girls understand, but I see it that way. Of course I also enjoy H, but ecchi has an unique charm to it, and besides the arguments are way more fun in ecchi anime series.
I literally laughed out loud while watching ecchi many times (Sora No Otoshimono, Mayoi Neko, High School DxD), but with H, it's just to see the goodies  :P Rarely do I get a laugh nor I get interested in the story in H anime.

It seems that you dont understood what I meant. Im not against ecchi and I even watch them if they are interesting, Im saying that I dislike anime that are mostly focused on ecchi and shows these scenes without a reason. I liked Highscool of the Dead for example, but some series (most of the ecchi series from these last years, not all) focuses only in ecchi. If I wants to see that type of thing without context, I go watch H. They use ecchi in various series only to get more attention from teenagers, instead of doing a good story and then it becomes a worsened H.

TL;DR: I can enjoy some ecchi, but Im not stupid like the majority of teenagers/mans these days that watches everything that have tits or asses showing regardless of the content. If its boring, you can add all tits from the world in it and it will still boring to me, vulgar (yay) but boring. So they shouldnt try to focus in ecchi only.

On the contrary, for me, it's better ecchi than H because to insinuate is sometimes better than showing. Maybe it's something only girls understand, but I see it that way.

You need to watch Yosuga no Sora.

You are talking with the number one ecchi fangirl, boy... I already watched that one!  :P

Among my favourite animes there are many recent or relatively recent ecchi series, like Rosario To Vampire, Sora No Otoshimono, High School DxD, High School DxD New, Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka, Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka Of The Dead, Mayoi Neko Overrun, Renkyuun San Magical Pokaan, Cyber Team in Akihabara.
I'm sure I'm forgetting about various series right now.

My top favourite remains Elfen Lied, I don't know if that can be counted as ecchi, though.
There's plenty of nudity, but the main focus is different.

I guess you are referring to that kind of anime with no argument and just ecchi stuff, and I understand what you say. I've come across many examples.
I guess the worst anime I've seen is one of those examples: He is my master.
Nothing makes sense.
A pity, since one of the girls was really cute and there was potential for a fun storyline.

About Yosuga No Sora...
Maybe I'm the only one who received it this way, but I found it annoying that there were so many fill girls and so little focus on Sora. I was mainly bored in all those episodes featuring random fill girls.
Luckily, in the end it paid to stick and keep watching.

And there's one particular scene I will always remember about this series, I guess you know which one I'm talking about  ;)

I never watched the Highschool of the Dead anime, but I read some of the manga a few years back. It was kinda like a train-wreck, couldn't look away. I assume the artist saw "The Walking Dead" and decided to try it with high school anime cliches and fanservice... lots, and lots of fanservice. I felt like I needed a shower after every chapter. Even dirtier than straight H. Speaking of which, just a reminder for us all to try not to get too graphic with H descriptions and don't link to it. And try to make all your anime video links either official uploads or intros/short clips for illustration ok?

Since X did a personal history of anime, I'll do my own.

First anime I think I ever watched was Superbook. Didn't know it was Japanese at the time, but I knew it was different from every other cartoon I watched because the art and animation was so much different, and I loved it.

Then Ronin Warriors and Samurai Pizza Cats came along, and I either determined on my own that they were Japanese or my older brother told me, but upon seeing the first episode of Ronin Warriors, all I could think was, "It's by the people who did Superbook!" :p

Sailor Moon arrived shortly after, and around that time my brother started buying anime on VHS because he'd grown up on Robotech and saw Vampire Hunter D on the Sci-Fi Channel long ago, so I got further exposure from him, including my favorite anime ever, the Macross Plus OVA. The original Dragon Ball aired around this time (at like 5 in the morning or something absurd), and DBZ came a year later, and by that point I was pretty much an anime freak of sorts—though far from being anything even resembling a weeaboo or otaku (or so I'd like to think; I certainly don't draw anime style or cosplay or think anime is THE BEST THING EVER! and I don't flip out about them being called cartoons because they are cartoons).

I never got into any of the stuff showing on Cartoon Network 'cos I didn't have cable at the time, and I kind of lost interest in cartoons and stuff around that time anyway. (Being a teen was all about listening to angsty music.) Although my brother did buy Cowboy Bebop and it blew my mind away, and he'd continue to show me stuff he'd buy like Record of Lodoss War and its TV series Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. Then of course Princess Mononoke was shown in the theater and it rocked my world, changed my life, etc.

So yeah, these days I have a pretty large collection of anime. I'm still not a weeaboo (despite having three anime wall scrolls in my room); call me one and I'll pop you in the mouth.

@Pfil: I like Cyber Team in Akihabara too, you watched it in Locomotion right? Along with Those Who Hunt Elves, Saber Marionette J (J to X, J Again, etc) and South Park? lol

They dont are random fill girls, its based in a Visual Novel so they are alternative routes, but the world "fill girls" suits them because of the nature of this anime :P

You're talking about the part where the siblings are "having some fun" and then some "visitors" open the door right? Or you are talking about the drowning scene?

Even dirtier than straight H. Speaking of which, just a reminder for us all to try not to get too graphic with H descriptions and don't link to it. And try to make all your anime video links either official uploads or intros/short clips for illustration ok?

Dirtier than H? I dont think so. Yeah, entire episodes from unofficial uploads counts as piracy too, sadly, but I dont see how some OPs/EDs or short clips can do any real harm so its better to do as you say (even if I think that unofficial uploads helps to promote the source material, its against the rules here).

So yeah, these days I have a pretty large collection of anime. I'm still not a weeaboo (despite having three anime wall scrolls in my room); call me one and I'll pop you in the mouth.

You forgot to add Kaiju in the weaboo meter  j/k

My first anime were Fly (Dragon Quest), Dragon Ball, Street Fighter II - Victory, Pole Position (its from japan? whatever, its from a game company anyway lol) and Magical Knights of Rayearth on channel 4 (SBT). Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, Ronin Warriors (called Samurai Warriors here) and then sometime after they started airing Shurato on channel 7 I think (Manchete), they aired some tokusatsus in this channel too like Jiraiya, Kamen Rider Black (I dont remember watching this but my father says I've at the time, So maybe I had 3 years), Kamen Rider Black RX and some others tokus that stopped airing before those. (Im feeling like I forgot some animes from the list at this time)

Years after they started airing Monster Farm (Monster Rancher) and Digimon on one channel and Pokémon in another one. Then we acquired a cable TV and got Cartoon Network (because some months before my dad began recording Dragon Ball Z in some VHS tapes in his job, he worked and still works in TV companies, so he obtained a cable TV to be easier to record at home xD) with Card Captors Sakura (Sakura Card Captors here), Gundam Wing, Dragon Ball Z, Inuyasha, Sailor Moon R (they aired it until Stars, so I saw almost everything, except that we had cancelled or cable TV some times, so I dont watched like 50 episodes T.T), Corrector Yui and a lot of others.

I would make a giga post if I continued this story about my life with animes (all of this happened until I was 10 years old only lol), its like if animes followed me until my 16 years more or less, then Brazilian TV channels stopped investing in anime like they did before and I started watching it in pirate DVDs that my dad buys (these homemade with a simple menu and 10 to 15 episodes each, IDK if its common in another countries) and after, started downloading them from internet to watch on DVD (my dad started doing DVDs like these, so we could watch it on a TV).

@Pfil: I like Cyber Team in Akihabara too, you watched it in Locomotion right? Along with Those Who Hunt Elves, Saber Marionette J (J to X, J Again, etc) and South Park? lol
From those anime series the only one I didn't watch is Those Who Hunt Elves. I like South Park too, but I have to be in South Park mode, like with The Simpsons. From both series I like older stuff, not so much about new episodes with South Park, and The Simpsons have been terrible for some years.
Not quite with Futurama, which only inferior season was the last one, but it was good anyway, and especially with Family Guy, which seems to never decay despite so many years airing.
But my favourite thing is anime, that I have no doubt.

They dont are random fill girls, its based in a Visual Novel so they are alternative routes, but the world "fill girls" suits them because of the nature of this anime :P
That's why I said that I must be the only one who received Yosuga No Sora in that way. But I just wanted to have insight of the love story between the boy and his sister, I didn't care (AT ALL) about the rest.
I liked Sora too much.

Kind of the same happened with "My little sister can't be this cute" (I don't remember the japanese name). Too much focus on random girls with gigantic breasts and too little focus on the little sister who gives name to the anime.
Sometimes anime derail too much from the original idea and I lose interest, so I find myself in auto-pilot watching episodes to see if something interesting happens again.

You're talking about the part where the siblings are "having some fun" and then some "visitors" open the door right? Or you are talking about the drowning scene?
The scene where the boy is sitting and his sister goes under the table to have some fun  ;)

Oh, that part, there are so much great scenes that its difficult to guess. You need to be alert, they will do a worldwide simulcast of the last 3 episodes from My Little Sister Can't be This Cute (Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai) in Crunchyroll. Here a preview:

I dont have seem the first season yet (at the time this series really grabbed my attention with photos and news, but I didnt take my time to watch) and Im downloading the second season everytime that a new episode comes out, but I dont watched anything yet, only 1 minute from the second season 1st episode xD

You're Under Arrest!
Is this series good? I've been curious about it for a while. Is one of the main characters transgender or something? Or is that just a one-off "joke" in an episode? I saw that come up when I tried to find some info about the series on youtube. Isn't Guyver the series where they (in one of the live action movies) had Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hammell graphically and painfully transform into a giant evil insect thing? I remember being a little weirded out by that when I happened upon it in the AM while flipping through channels many many moons ago. I seem to remember hearing good things about Dirty Pair and found it has been officially uploaded by Manga Entertainment in the US http://www.youtube.com/user/MANGAentertainment (http://www.youtube.com/user/MANGAentertainment) along with several other series including GITS: SAC. Is it worth watching subbed?

Also wow surprised to hear so many people remember Ronin Warriors. I thought it was all but forgotten, or about as close to it as anything that ran on Toonami is liable to get. I'd like to see more of Big O but the prices on the DVDs these days are outrageous. Oh and anyone else like Sherlock Hound? I know there's some Trigun fans around here somewhere. I thought the Read or Die movie was fun but pretty dumb, was there more worth checking out from that title?

You're Under Arrest is good I found. I enjoyed it for what it was and the stories were good too. It also has it's own humor. The series 'Oh, my Goddes!' is actually a spin-off series of you're under arrest as it takes place in the same universe, but with different people, locations, etc. Well...almost. the monk whom left on a whim in oh my goddess is the same monk in you're under arrest, and stays at the same temple grounds too. Both series' were done by Kōsuke Fujishima so it's kinda mandatory.

And aside from the Guyver anime that I mentioned, there are also two live-action movies that were produced, and yes Mark Hammell was in the first one and he did become an insect Zoanoid of a sort. However the Zoalord explained that he wasn't in the Genemorphasis tank long enough so he quickly died after turning into a zoanoid. The second movie was far better then the first in my opinion. It had the best soundtrack which many would state as 50% of the whole movie. Less Claypool III was the composer and he did an awesome job. Now if only they would release his soundtrack of Guyver 2: Dark Hero... The dirty pair is also a good one to watch. It's got comedy that's expected of the dangerously dynamic duo; Kei and Yuri. There are some stories that take a serious tone but not enough to ruin the whole thing. Give it a shot when you're feeling retro. I watch the dubbed episodes so I'm not sure about the subbed ones.

High School of the Dead will have a season 2. Hehehe, so excited.

My first anime.... most likely it would be one of those children's literature types like Princess Sarah, Heidi, The Secret Garden, etc.
Then comes Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z...
More shojo anime like: Magic Knight Rayearth, Card Captor Sakura, X, and other CLAMP creations.
More shonen anime like: Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc.
Mecha: Gundam (a lot of them), Escaflowne
Children shows: Pokemon (some episodes/movies occasionally), Monster Rancher, Digimon (4 seasons!)
Other shows: Cyberteam in Akihabara, Trigun, Trinity Blood, Bubblegum Crisis, You're Under Arrest, Oh My Goddess, etc.
In the recent years: Fafner, Heroic Age, Blood+ (I'm so proud of this, I watched it raw!), Kuroshitsuji.
My most recent ones were already listed earlier. Oh yeah, I forgot Sword Art Online.

I would definitely be missing a lot of shows that I can't remember right now. hehehe.  ;D

About halfway through GITS:SAC and it's picked up quite a bit from the somewhat stagnant early episodes. I expected the series to just be a cyberpunk Police Procedural with an on-again off-again main storyline but the episodes have been surprisingly varied and in some cases touching. It's also great hearing Outlaw Star's "Hot Ice" Hilda's VA as the Major since she plays it much more deep and breathy (like Hilda) in SAC than in the movie.

Tekkaman was my very first anime I watched on TV regularly knowing it was "something special." (By special I mean not US cartoons like Disney's). I gotta find it online so I can watch it again. I keep finding Tekkaman Blade, which I didn't like very much. The first one was just so hardcore (for an American kid that wasn't yet into anime) and it was on Sunday mornings too, if I remember right. Then when I went into the video store when I was 16 or 17 and saw the anime section, I realized that show I'd been watching was part of something grander. The old hand-drawn painted cels anime always makes me feel so damned nostalgic. I always get depressed and sad when I watch classic anime, even if it's supposed to be humorous. I'll laugh and cry at the same time -- laugh at the jokes, cry at the nostalgia. It's really unnerving and probably why I don't watch as much anime these days.

New Pokémon Anime - Pokémon: The Origin Official Trailer (Sneak Peek to Mega Charizard?) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XncRoNUxmLc#)

is being made by XEBEC, the same people that did this:

Haiyore Nyaruko-san W [Opening] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twLhgk2S2ZM#ws)

So it will be good in the animation department :P

Also, I've found some RAW footage from the new Higurashi no Naku Koro ni OVA, without subs. If someone is interested PM me.

I know what you mean. Been watching more of Slayers: NEXT (aka Season 2) and man does it ever look like those early episodes of Pokemon. Talk about a flashback. It helps that the loveable comedy villain has the same voice actress as Pokemon's Misty in the english dub.

Been in a DQ mood like badly and I think I found my favorite pink haired anime girl(Maam  :-*   showing alot of skin especially in the leg area kills me hence why short shorts/spandex/yoga shorts get me very :-[  ) not only that the show is hitting me in all the right ways with the main three characters. The theme is also catching up on me.

Yep, great high-fantasy/Dungeons and Dragons parody. That stuff was apparently all the rage in Japan in the late 80s/early 90s. Shame that trend seems to be almost forgotten in Japan now, aside from the national obsession with Dragon Quest.

Watched "Mind Game", some Naruto movies, and, um... what else... oh "Eve no Jikan" this weekend.

I hate Studio 4*C's style, but I still actually liked "Mind Game" by the time it was over. I was just sitting here thinking, "Damn... This is getting to be such a motivational movie!" Then by the end I was more like, "Why do I suddenly have the urge to watch 'DOA' or 'Sharkskin Man, Peach Hip Woman' again?" Love those trippy Japanese yakuza movies.

As for "Eve no Jikan", I didn't think it was that great, but the story was still good enough to hold my interest. Was a decent sci-fi story. Everyone's worried robots will take over the world, but they just want to be treated like everyone else and sometimes they just wanna go where everybody knows their name and they're always glad they came. They want to be where they can see their troubles are all the same.

The Naruto movies were meh. The one where Madara sends them to another reality where Naruto's parents are alive and Sakura's are dead was nice, but then it just made me hate Sakura even more because she gets a chance to see for herself how much Naruto's life sucked, but in the alternate reality people still like her and dote on her, whereas Naruto was always an outcast. And after all that, she still chases after Sasuke and disses on Naruto. She never actually learned anything and remained a spoiled, selfish brat. Watched the Blood Prison one too and that almost bored me; it was too predictable. Have some other movie I downloaded a couple nights ago I'll watch tonight. Usually just use YouTube, though.

Oh and watched the 3D CG .hack\\ movie. ... Also meh. Same as all the others. Weak story. Weakest of all the .hack\\ productions. Looked like it was made in MikuMikuDance too.

Just finished "A Letter To Momo". Debuted end of 2011, released 2012. It was written and directed by Hiroyuki Okiura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroyuki_Okiura#Filmography), who worked with Satoshi Kon a lot and has been a key animator in a lot of big name anime; it shows. Watching this movie was like watching all those anime he worked on meshed together. Apparently it took 7 years to make, but the writing I think was still a little rough. The animation though was superb, as is to be expected from Okiura and Production I.G.

Cute story, if not troperific. Widow and her daughter move to a different town and the girl is all alone. Three trouble-making spirits appear as guardians watching over the girl and her mother until the spirit of the girl's father reaches heaven (aka "The Sky"). The spirits are trouble-makers, frequently stealing food and odds & ends, so the girl threatens to break the spirits' pass back to heaven if they don't behave. When the mother suffers from horrible asthma attacks during a severe typhoon and the girl runs out of the house to find a doctor, the spirits come to the girl's aid even though it could cost them their lives because they interfered with natural order.

... Yeah, it's basically My Neighbor Totoro with demons instead of fuzzy pillow-pals. Entertaining movie, but felt a bit long. The spirits were hilarious. There's one scene where the biggest spirit pushes the girl off a ledge into water and then cheers her on. And Mame, the littlest spirit, is so damned cute and loveable, even though he looks like Gollum.

But right now DBZ is not in my top 10 anime rank.

DB, you mean DBZ?
I am speaking strictly from my personal tastes here.
Because I think DB (the old series, with kid Goku) is too childish for my tastes, and DBGT is just plain terrible. One of the worst anime I watched.
But DBZ yes, I'll always like it (except the most part of the Cell saga).
Today, I have watched so many great anime series that it's impossible for DBZ to remain on my top 10, but of course I like it.
By heart, without checking my written list, I can think of Elfen Lied, Haruhi Suzumiya No Yuutsu (2 seasons), Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka (2 seasons), Rosario to Vampire (2 seasons), Sora No Otoshimono (2 seasons), Ano Hana, Angel Beats, High School DxD (2 seasons), Dance in the Vampire Bund, Magipoka, Mayoi Neko Overrun, Moetan, Cyber Team in Akihabara, Full Metal Alchemist (2 seasons)... and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few series, but that's already like 20 anime I like more than DBZ, and the same happens to other older anime like Pokémon, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, Saber J / J to X... I still like them a lot, but there's plenty of anime series I like better now.

I disagree. Well, I can't disagree that you like newer anime more, but for me the old anime are still at the extreme top of my lists.

Slayers will always be no.1 for me.

Record Of Lodoss War will be up there near it until I die.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor will always be one of my all-time faves.

Saber Marionette J will probably be the only harem anime (in essence that's what it is) I ever like -- all because of Megumi Hayashibara.

I watched all of Rurouni Kenshin and read the manga; the same can hardly be said for shows in a similar vein like Naruto or Bleach -- I think those shows are crap... but Naruto's games are fun.

Cowboy Bebop will undoubtedly be in the top ten.

Serial Experiments Lain was, is, and always will be one of the best avant-garde cyberpunk anime ever.

Angelic Layer is my favorite CLAMP series, although CCS may be close.

Samurai Champloo is still one of the funniest anime I've ever seen and continue to watch, surpassing Excel Saga, which was one of those nostalgic anime I mentioned (I buy the Excel Saga manga as they get released stateside).

Paranoia Agent, while it could be considered a newer anime, will always, always, always be in my top ten list regardless of whatever anime may come out next or that I may "catch up on."

Haibane Renmei was probably the latest addition and skyrocketed

FLCL was fucked up crazy good and that one song is stuck in my head.

Azumanga Daioh got me into Yotsuba&!, so it rightfully secured its position in my top 20 list.

.hack//Sign is one of the series I continue to watch over and over.

Mai-HiME was an immediate favorite of mine and the third anime with OST by Kajiura (I think... Noir, then .hack//Sign, then Mai-HiME).

Full Metal Panic was one of my college faves.

Full Metal Alchemist (first series) is another that slithered its way into my list.

Mononoke immediately leapt into the top ten list from day one; coupled with the Bakeneko story from Ayakashi.

Jigoku Shoujo may be hanging on somewhere around 19 or 20, always leaving a bad taste in my mouth when I watch it.

Bokurano is probably 18 or 19 in my list; the opening theme lured me to it and the ceaselessly depressing content kept me watching it all the way to the depressing end.

Surprise, surprise, Hikaru No Go is and perhaps always will be one of my favorites -- 72 or so captivating episodes about a board game... A BOARD GAME!!

So far I've only considered series. Including short OVAs and movies makes things harder. Urotsukidouji. Vampire Princess Miyu. Magical Twilight (the hentai with student witches). Paprika. Perfect Blue. Millenium Actress. Tokyo Godfathers. Metropolis. Mononoke Hime. Spirited Away. Vampire Hunter D. Macross Plus (how this doesn't at least make top 20 on everyone's list is proof hope is lost for humanity). The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (okay, it's a recent entry like Paprika, but the original premise is old, so it counts). Voices of Distant Stars. Heisei Tanuki Taisen PonPoko. Grave of the Fireflies. Neko No Ongaeshi.

Some anime that I liked that have fallen out of favor:
GS Mikami (I can't find subtitles, so I just sit there watching raws mindlessly).
Risky Safety (the girl annoyed me, but Risky and Safety were so cute).
Desert Punk (immature humor...).
Excel Saga (see above).
Shinesman.
Astrofighter SunRed (not really fallen out of favor, but it's just somewhere in the lower 40).
Magic Knight Rayearth (got me into CLAMP, but preferred the manga).
GeGeGe no Kitaro (when you've seen one season, you've seen them all... literally).
Hellsing (I'll try to get back into it one of these days, but it got pushed out of my list pretty fast).
Mahoujin GuruGuru (still fun to watch, but nowhere near the top anymore).
Yoma (watch it every now and then, but don't like it anymore).
Ninja Scroll (yeah, it got bumped down).
Akira (still one of the most badass soundtracks of all time the world over, though).
Dirty Pair (love, love , love the series... but it's not that good).
Nekojiru (makes you feel dirty for liking it BECAUSE YOU ARE DIRTY FOR LIKING IT).
Noir (bored the fucking piss out of me, but I always got the urge to play a FPS after watching it).
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Gainax's flagship kinda just didn't hold up very well for me).
Haunted Junction (teenaged girl sexually harassing deceased children can only carry a show for so long).
Inuyasha (lost interest as the series dragged on). Naruto (see above notes).
Ranma 1/2 (as you can see, Rumiko's works haven't held up over time for me).
Project A-Ko (the original will always be dear to me, but that's nostalgia at its finest).
Shamanic Princess (loved the style, but that was about it in the end).
Bubblegum Crisis (still great cyberpunk, but not in my top 20).
Alien Nine (watched it, fell asleep, got mind-fucked at the end -- what the fuck man that big alien at the end?!!).
Panty & Stocking w/Garterbelt (hahah, this one is like, top 25 or so for me; still funny because it's still recent).
Pita Ten (my first purely moe anime fave, although it became somewhat forgettable).
Ichigeki Sacchu! Hoihoi-san (pure moe love, but when I'm honest with myself it's nothing special).

Most anime's just about hype. And most anime start off good and then blow chunks starting around episode 40. Sometimes they start off boring and only get good around episode 40. And then sometimes they're good throughout. I haven't seen many of that last kind.

Revo? Didn't like it as much. Was still entertaining, but something just felt off. For whatever reason it lacked the charm of S1 and Next. Even Try seemed better to me. But I still liked it. And all the movies. Even though I don't understand a lick of dialogue in them, I like the Sega Saturn games too (I guess they're the same ones on Playstation, but I don't have a Playstation). Too bad the games are so easy, but they're still fun in a way.

@TheouAegis: It's OK, everyone has their own personal lists  :)

I became increasingly more an anime fan when I grew up. As a teenager I used to watch entire series and read mangas, already a lot (for what's common, I mean), but when I finished high school was the time when I totally falled into that, and I could spend entire weeks watching anime.
Maybe that's why I like newer stuff more than older, which I still like and re-watch from time to time, anyway (I re-watched Sailor Moon 2 years ago, for example).

And it's true that many anime tend to get boring after a good start (Full Metal has a lot of fill episodes, for example).
But many of my favourite anime series (if not all) are series of 13 or 26 episodes.

The only longer one I can think of is Clannad (I knew I would forget about one when earlier I made the other list!). 52 episodes in 2 seasons and 1 movie, it's the longest that made it to my current personal top anime list.

If I consider the amount of swag I got as a gauge on how much I love a particular anime/manga....
Number 1 would be Gundam Seed
(I have a love-hate relationship with Destiny, but I also have a lot of swag for that sequel as well)
Kuroshitsuji
Senkaiden Houshin Engi
RG Veda
Trinity Blood
X

When I go to Japan again, I'm gonna buy me lots of UtaPri swag!  :D

That's one thing that annoys me about Cartoon Network but also what makes it easy to discredit lists. I can look up Top 10 or Top 20 or Top 50 anime lists and 99% of them contain Toonami/Adult Swim stuff.

Really? So you decided to write up a top 10 list and your only source material is a time slot that showed 20 or so anime? Get off the internet.

Reviewers need to cut the mainstream crap and actually get out and look for anime. There's a lot of crap out there from the 80s and 90s. There are also the old old old anime where everything's blocky and there are no in-betweens (Speed Racer, Kimba, GeGeGe no Kitarou G1). The really deep or moving anime rarely make it on the lists. Typically it's just stuff that someone's friend nerdgasmed over, like Ninja Scroll for example. Good movie? Of course it is! Great movie? Not really...

Hikaru No Go: On maybe 0.2% of anime lists out there. Excellent show based on a manga based on a board game that went on for many seasons, each of which I have watched. It actually had/has a fan following, yet it pretty much never makes a top anime list. Why? Because it's about a board game instead of ninjas and boobs.

Nekojiru and Astrofighter Sunred: Saw these on the same list. The guy's list literally blew my mind. Great animation? Almost no animation at all! But two of the funniest shows I'd ever watched.

Grave of the Fireflies: This makes a lot of lists, but still not enough. Is it a great anime? Not particularly. Is it a must-see? Seeing as how it's 100x better than the live-action version of it, yes. It's old. It's by Studio Ghibli. And it makes grown men cry.

Makoto Shinkai's films: He's gaining popularity slowly, but his early works are superior to most of the stuff Toonami/Adult Swim airs.

Little Nemo: No, this isn't an American cartoon, it's anime. It's childish, but the animation quality is superb even by today's standards. Oh wait, we don't have standards today.

GeGeGe no Kitaro and Hakaba Kitaro: Certain countries have had these series translated and even aired on TV. 90% of Americans have never even heard of them, while about the same percentage of Japanese have. Great animation? No. Great storytelling? Yup, at least G2 and G3.

I'll try to be fair. I mean, 90% of my favorite anime have been between 1985 and 2005 because, well, I stopped watching anime as much after college due to work and having no internet at home for a while -- mostly work, though. I do look up the movies that come out and some post-2k5 series do make it into my faves list for a time. It was hard to find fansubs that interested me and that were available online. Most anime I watched was on VHS. Eventually digital fansubbing became popular and more options were opened to me, but after college and with slow downloads, it was hard to hyperload on fansubs. I had no TV at home, but everything I could have watched on CN in the years after college I'd already seen on VHS without crappy voice acting. The stuff I had easy access to in those years that I moved out of my parents' house and got internet were dominated by shoujo and yaoi fansubs, or subs of mecha anime that I never really had interest in. Every so often I'd find one that actually piqued my interest past episode 1, but without my anime club I couldn't get back into it as much as I had been in college. The only anime club I could find near me was for high schoolers... "Yeah, officer, I swear I'm just trying to watch anime, not stalk underage girls!" Right now, Wikipedia is my friend; I search award winners and then download those. Or Anime Encyclopedia, sometimes, which was how I found out about Haibane Renmei. Every once in a blue moon YouTube actually suggests something worthwhile, too. But for the most part, the new stuff doesn't pique my interests because, well, I guess because no one else is watching them with me.  Well, that's not entirely true. My brother is obsessed with anime for some reason, but most of the stuff he watches is harem anime crap. Since he doesn't know English that well and is just homeschooled by my mom, he thinks good anime is boring.

I've only said some part of my life, so I've yet to post about another animes that I watched. But Toonami were cool and a lot of people that watched anime in it maybe not even know that this was anime (ok, not at this age with internet and all, but at the time).

Remember that we are not reviewers, so dont lame us of this stupid behaviour please. Its okay to share your frustration with us, I also think that these serious review sites should gather a lot of animes to do it right or else it becomes a personal list, not a list to be relied on if you dont know this guy.

If it's true it might explain why a lot of non-Otakus like myself see a lot of modern anime as too repetitive.

The way I see it, personal lists are the only thing that exist, and opinions are the only thing.
Reviews are just opinions. Objectivity is just following what the majority has established as "the truth".
Objective rankings are just glorified personal lists. Awards are just glorified opinions. Critics are people with glorified opinions.
And rankings based on personal opinions like IMDB rankings are just the sum of personal lists and opinions, so it's a big personal list.
And so on...
A review from an awarded and recognized critic or the IMDB ranking, or all that stuff, doesn't have more value than my opinion or my personal rankings, your opinion and rankings, his or hers.
Opinions and personal tastes. That's all there is.
The rest is a lie.

This part bothers me:

Quote
The focus has led to a plunge in profits for anime studios and has made new anime series ridiculously difficult to understand unless religiously followed.

Because it shows that the reviewer want things that are so easy to understand that you can start from episode 15 and understand it for example. This type of thing shows that he is immature and/or "dumb"?

I know its old, but even so. At this time they did anime with simple story and still do it, if he wants every anime to be easy to understand without being "religiously followed" then he contradicts himself, since he wants more of the same.

Apart of that I agree with this article in some points.

How popular is this around the world:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Fang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Fang)

It's the first anime I watched. Pretty violent, but to censors at the time, a cartoon was a cartoon.  So it was marketed for children. The 21 episodes had the worst violence (which is a lot) removed and stuffed into four VHS tapes. It was hugely popular here.

Later those who loved it and grew up, "discovered" the version sold was cut like a deer carcass. A petition was made and eventually the episodes were released untouched, with original voices and subbed. I think it's largely due to GNG's popularity that they released its spin-off's, sequels and mangas here.

I've seem a guy searching for it subbed in a famous brazilian site focused in news and telling everytime a fansub launches something (AnimeBlade). It seems that no one subbed it here, so yeah, no one in Brazil that doesnt know english must have seen this anime.

After reading through this thread, I thought I'd post my anime background.

As a kid, the first anime I ever got into was Pokemon. I randomly got a VHS tape in the mail from Nintendo promoting Pokemon in the USA before the anime and games were released over here. I got SO FREAKING EXCITED over that VHS tape, lol. I got Pokemon Red for Christmas that year and I started watching the show the first day it aired. I didn't really look into other anime at the time, since I didn't even know what anime was. It wouldn't be until two years later I discovered Sailor Moon on Toonami. I became obsessed with Sailor Moon and started watching other things on Toonami like Tenshi Muyo, Rurouni Kenshin, and Yu Yu Hakusho.

Eventually, I started watching less TV and would buy random anime DVDs or manga, depending on my mood, that looked interesting at the mall with allowance money. It was buying random anime DVDs and manga where I discovered some of my favorite anime and manga series ever like Trinity Blood, Slayers, Escaflowne, and Spiral Bonds of Reasoning.

Buying anime stuff that looked interesting to me also led me into discovering my all time favorite game, Lunar 2 Eternal Blue.

Nowadays I don't even read manga anymore...except for a few exceptions. I still watch anime, but I do it online via Crunchyroll or Hulu. Despite still watching anime, there isn't a whole lot of new stuff that excites me the way some of my older favorite shows do. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy anime quite a bit. I just don't like the new stuff as much as I do the older stuff. I'd say the last newer anime that I really, really got into was Umineko. I ended up buying the visual novel, which is TONS better than the anime, and I'm buying the manga volumes as they get released over here. Heck, I loved Umineko so much that I have a production drawing from the Umineko anime! It's only of Maria, but oh well. My Higurashi production drawings much cooler (Rika and Hanyu), but I'm excited to have my Maria drawing!  :P

I'm surprised Lelygax hasn't mentioned Umineko or Higurashi given Lelygax's avatar and signature, unless I missed it somewhere in this thread, lol.

You could scan these glorious things for me?

I didnt mentioned them because I've only said a part of my history. I've said more or less 1/3 of my life with animes, because its really boring to remember and type all of this.

But Umineko have a deep connection with me, since I've discovered it when it started airing in japan and then thought "cool synopsis, I really will watch this". Months later I've decided to start downloading all episodes and watched the first one, but then forgot it in my HDD, a time later I've backuped it in a DVD and let it untouched. Thats it, I've totally forgot to watch this, but this have dragged me next to it at the time and for sure did it again...

Years later I've started watching Higurashi, everything (less Rei, I've even made some DVDs for a DVD player so I could watch them on a TV, but I dont know where they are for now, my life is a mess right now so lets forget about Rei for now) and then a miracle happened: after years without launching anything, they announced Higurashi Kira.

I've watched Kira when they released it, before this I've played the Umineko VNs and then after this I've watched the anime. I was reading the manga once in a while and it blows away the anime, they should redo Umineko anime and dont let Studio Deen touch it this time, since they have destroyed even one of the most epic scenes that is Beatrice x Virgilia.

And now, they did it again, a new Higurashi OVA will be launched this year (its already launched unofficially, since some people received it as a prize in a Higurashi event in Japan and uploaded it to internet) and I'll watch it even without subs if needed.

P.S.: This guy that did this "Umineko Explained" thing called KnownNoMore in youtube is a retard, doesnt let his arguments infect your mind. If you never watched this video that Im talking about, then its better if you avoid it unless you want to laugh xD

Of course!  :P

Since others might be interested, I'll post them here. I'll also go ahead and throw in my Spiral production sketches as well...in case there are other weirdos like me out there who like obscure anime/manga like Spiral.

Higurashi:
http://s64.photobucket.com/user/kuro_kaze/library/HigurashiProduction?sort=3&page=1 (http://s64.photobucket.com/user/kuro_kaze/library/HigurashiProduction?sort=3&page=1)

Umineko:
http://s64.photobucket.com/user/kuro_kaze/library/UminekoProduction?sort=3&page=1 (http://s64.photobucket.com/user/kuro_kaze/library/UminekoProduction?sort=3&page=1)

Spiral:
http://s64.photobucket.com/user/kuro_kaze/library/SpiralProduction?sort=3&page=1 (http://s64.photobucket.com/user/kuro_kaze/library/SpiralProduction?sort=3&page=1)

I had actually discovered the Umineko anime not too long after it came in Japan, but wouldn't actually watch it for a while. I had just figured out the name of a song I had been trying to figure out for a long time called Hanakisou. I had randomly found the song on Nico Nico Douga and ripped the song from the video. So it took some hunting, but I eventually figured out what it was. I fell in love with Akiko Shikata and searched Youtube. That's when I found Katayoku no Tori. I thought the opening looked cool, but stupid me didn't look into it at the time.

Eventually, my best friend MADE me watch Higurashi. After I eventually finished watching Higurashi, Rei, and Kai, she told me that I should watch Umineko. It had been a year or so since I found the opening at that point, but I had forgotten all about Umineko...until I heard that song. I watched like, half of Umineko in one sitting, lol. It took me about three days to finish the whole anime.

But yeah, I couldn't get enough of the Umineko anime after it ended and I had to read the visual novels after that! And so, I purchased Umineko no Naku Koro ni and Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru. I didn't regret spending $60 on both arcs, especially reading it with Witch Hunt's amazing translation. :)

EDIT: I had forgotten what Umineko explained was until I looked it up just now and then I remembered listening to that a while back and laughing at the stupidity of it as well. I haven't seen the newer Chiru explanation that he has posted, but sometime tells me I don't want to if it's as bad as his original explanation.  XD

It is and at the end he uses the most famous phrase in his favor, in the wrong way. Its so stupid and it was the only possible way that I can laugh when reading "Without love it cannot be seen".

edit: I've seen they all, its interesting that they are already colored with light and shadow markers to become animation cells. Where did you get these type of things and how many it costs? Since it seems to be very rare I bet you needed to participate a bidding.

Also its cool to discover that Deen didnt started using RETAS to do anime, at least not at this time, since it seems to be a new standard for some companies.

P-OVA「ひぐらしのなく頃に 拡~アウトブレイク~」予告映像第2弾 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhsPncFJHdk#ws)

Rozen Maiden (2013) last episode was good too, Studio Deen are really redeeming themselves after that shameful Umineko adaptation, lets hope for a sequel since this Rozen Maiden season ended in a wonderful cliffhanger.

Watching Viper's Creed this week. It's too episodic for my tastes, but it has a lot of influences on it, I think. The show reminds me so much of a mash-up of various mech anime and games like Front Mission, Quovadis, Future Cop: LAPD, and Masamune Shirow's stuff. Of course that's all because Shinji Aramaki worked on VC (if you liked BGC2040, the mechs in VC will feel familiar). The show really does feel like a spot-the-tropes game to me. I hope the series gets better -- I'm only on episode 7 -- but as I said, so far it's very episodic. At a glance on the wiki, it sounds like there is a climax to the series, which means at some point there has to be an underlining plot too. I shall see. Oh, and the opening song was by Koji Nakamura. I geeked out when I heard it cuz I immediately recognized the voice of Supercar's singer.

Viper's Creed was okay. Would have been better if they developed the characters more.

So I finished rereading all 10 volumes of the Hellsing manga. It's caused the Hellsing Ultimate OVA, which I already loved, to go up several notches in my estimation. The dub translation in the OVA feels a lot less clunky than that in the Dark Horse translation of the manga. And Hirano's art style was fairly crude for the first 2 volumes. Plus some of the pacing changes in the OVA (like working it so that the Alhambra and Rip Van Winkle fights are finished in single volumes rather than being left on "cliffhangers") that I had originally disliked were, in retrospect, good calls. Still one of my absolute favorite mangas though.

Got a Crunchyroll 30-day trial to catch up on Kill la Kill on my PS3. (1080p, yo.) Probably gonna watch Attack on Titan while I'm at it, and also periodically watching an episode or two of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt—dubbed in this case, because the Powerpuff Girls style drawings are really fun to look at, and the show's so fast-paced it's difficult to read and look at the same time. That and I think the dub is even funnier because it's filled with so many expletives and raunchy jokes, even more so than the subbed version, that it really fits the over-the-top nature of the show.

One of these days I'll resume Tekkaman Blade, Fist of the North Star, and Slayers.
