It is too dark, but I like what he did.

Aside from the dark lighting, obvious physics issues, candles being "behind" the player, and occasional bugs, this looks pretty good actually.  There was actually some really neat things in the level design especially, so major kudos to the author for that.  I'd tone down the moonlight god rays though, or make it where they do not interfere with the camera and make it too bright to see.

Yeah, the lighting really bothers me, not too sure what would make someone want to make everything so dark.

But otherwise...wow. Me want.

The video description says they are still working with issues in Unreal's Lightmass.  That is probably why it's so dark.  Perhaps in the meantime the best method would be to increase brightness in-game.

It just needs a light source behind the camera, providing soft ambient light.
In the video, only the moon and the candles (and some background objects maybe?) are emitting light.

Now THAT is what we need for a new classicvania! But yeah, it's too dark. Once they get a handle on the lighting it'll look fantastic. I can also see CV II and CV III being adapted in this manner as well.

Character renders and ESPECIALLY animations look pretty bad, and the previously-mentioned problems about lack of ambient lighting are hugely unsettling.

Looks pretty fantastic otherwise. I'm just hoping those animations were placeholder; goofy stiff pimp walks might look great on older consoles, but sticking something like that in Unreal just looks sooooooo bad, man.

As for Graphics, I know what UE is capable of, it's fantastic.
Moon Lighting is amazing, as well as other effects
The textures, sound, and perspective (needs to look a wee bit more flat) needs work

Just more internal lighting and you'd have an awesome game.
I like this very much.

I think the depth of the environment is to much. It feels like the camera is way to far back from the action. The whip sound really needs some variation also it starts to become painfully repetitive. The concept is pretty cool though. I think with a bit of refinement this could be pretty awesome.

Watch as Konami lawyers shut this guy down.

I'm already making popcorn.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Unless he plans to try and make a buck off it, they shouldn't be able to. If that remains true and he brands it as homage or parody, then he's in the legal green-light lane.

Of course, Konami still holds the IP so their word is basically law on the matter, so actual copyright legality aside they could still be dicks and pull the plug anyway. It didn't stop Squeenix on Chrono Trigger: Resurrection, though I suspect that was purely because someone did a better job at it than Squeenix themselves did.

The guys who were remaking Metal Gear Solid in Unreal would like to have a word with you. They branded it an homage and planned to distribute it for free, and Konami shut them down the instant they found out about it.

Konami's record is ABSOLUTELY against anyone who makes tribute games. I'm honestly surprised they've let the fan games phenomenon go on this long as it pertains to Castlevania.
