This was going to appear in my homebrew Castlevania, when Richter gives Maria a brief tutorial. Later he would appear with the SotN outfit, just to tell you "hey, you-know-what is gonna happen now!".
Huh. No wonder a lot of them are pretty darn good. I like Camus's Nathan. The quality of it is actually better than Cyberdragon10k's. Of course, a few of the banner sprites though look a little odd.
Sonia's legs look a bit misshapen.
Grant's pose looks pretty uncomfortable.
Cornell's upper body looks misproportionate to his lower body.
Reinhardt just looks... odd.
That's all I really think look odd. Other sprites, such as Gabriel and Desmond look really cool. And then Aeon looks amazing. :D You ever think about doing full sprite sheets of them one day?
I have a pet peeve with people using Richter as a base sprite... for two reasons:
1. It's usually very obvious that Richter was used.
2. I haaaaaaaaaaate Richter Belmont. I think he's overhyped/overrated.
If people must use that type of Belmont, they should use Fake Trevor and figure out how to do stair animations like how Thaddeus did it.

Serio used to post here long ago, but his constant misbehaving conduct caused him to be banned. It seems he's held a grudge against the forum ever since, though I hear tell other boards have had other problems with him that were worse. This is why anything hotlinked from his forum/site to here (specifically to here, I think) doesn't quite work out as expected.
I used to do the character portraits for his game, too. I did the Kid Dracula spritesheet and helped in giving CV4 Simon Belmont a roll, a dodge, and superjump attack.

Yeah, I knew about the portraits. Didn't know about Simon, though. He said something about Sypha once, too, but I didn't really read the post. I wasn't even a member of his team at the time either.
And about the portraits, I quite liked a lot of them. Albus was an example of one that was really well done.
The blue coat prototye-Trevor sprite I believe is what he's talking about. In the MUGEN fangame Dracula X something (forget the title) I believe they named him Ricardo, and gave him a musket style weapon.
That was actually a pretty good fan game. Has it progressed at all? Where can it be found/does it have an official website?

Well, right off the bad I notice your Trevor uses more than the usual number of colors, and yet looks like he's not using enough colors. This is probably because of the low contrast the colors are using. You've got very nice leathery browns, grays, and greens, which would be great for a 3D model, but for a sprite, it makes it look very plain since usually a hero/main character sprite is supposed to stand out.
I would probably start using more high contrast colors like green instead of gray, and a slightly brighter brown, to bring him up. The other thing is, I'm not fond of the tuft of hair on his head. I realize it makes him look just like the artwork for CoD Trevor, but it just looks like an Afro to me in the regular 'stance' animation (his hair looks better in the attacking animations).
Lastly, there's a lot of three-color line-shading going on in some of the sprites. Line-shading is where you're just using three colors progressively getting darker, in a line, in order to create depth, but the problem is that it makes things look very amateur-ish. Specific examples are the the boot in his very first jumping sprite (sixth from the left, first row). If you notice, the boot is just three colors progressively getting darker at the bottom. Line-shading, like Pillow-shading (a similar problem but appears more in bulbous areas) is particularly apparent, here. It's not nearly as apparent in his regular stance, though. That's a pretty nice-looking stance. I might give him more of a crotch bulge though, 'cuz he's got a female crotch right now. xD Again, this is just personal preference.

Once you get good with color usage, you can really make your characters pop.
One of the things in sprite art creation that one must be aware of, is that your character is going to be always within a game's backdrops. You take into account the backdrops of the game as you create the character, so that he or she is versatile no matter what background is in there, as well as the style of said backdrop. CoDTrevor's colors are fine... in that they match the artwork. However, if you put him in a game like, say, Rondo of Blood (just as an example), you'll notice he will not be as noticeable as the backgrounds in the game, since the backgrounds use vibrant colors with high contrasts, while he uses the subdued low-contrast colors of the artwork. As such, I suggest you turn his color contrast up. If he's got grays, make them brighter grays. If he's got a secondary color like a green, then make sure the grays and the greens have contrast. This will make the character pop out more.
The boot looks like it's glowing for one frame. Does, look better with the whip in there, though, I have to admit.Yes, there's one frame in which the foot is slightly bent toward, so since my boots are more like greaves, there'd be a little extra sheen in there. I might edit it though.
nice I like that custom swoosh frame in thereI only added it to prove a point, but yeah, Fake Trevor has a similar one (only it's got a gradient of colors and is translucent).
Oh wow. It does look good once there's a whip in there.
Speaking of which, I have to ask, do you have a full sheet with all three whips from Super Castlevania IV? I could really use those (I'm aware Whip 2 and 3 are the same, with 3 being longer).
Ok. I think the only animations left are the getting hit and death animations, right? Oh wait, you'll probably add the swinging from SCV4 too. And the whipping in 8 directions.

Yknow, Im in no position to critique when I can barely sprite, (I usually just edit and frankensprite. Scratching is slightly beyond me.) but @ Jorge, I really dont like the way your Simon's feet look. They seem too small. Tiny. And in his regular standing sprite, they look too rounded to me.
Just my opinion, but it was really bugging me.

Speaking of your sprites, I think the way you're placing highlights is doing more bad than good. They seem to be specks following a vague lightsource, it just makes them seems as noise rather than building form. I think rather than spreading them out just for flavor, you should have broader highlights with the intent of accentuating form and folds. Also, you have a random dark blue pixel on his coat that's used nowhere else.

I certainly like the brighter, more Rondo-ish colors (the original's have a slightly washed-out palette but that could just be me, I've not seen 'em in a while), though I realize they're not the same as the Rondo colors. I don't know what else to say about that. Critiquing a color palette is somewhat difficult since you might like it but someone else might not...

You can add tags when you're NOT using Quick Reply. The Tags field shows up when you reply to a thread, right under the Subject Line.
You can add tags to an entire thread at the bottom if you see an "Add Tag" button next to the existing tags... but only if you have the right permissions (I think only mods and admins can add without replying but I'm not sure).
You should be able to do that as well, because you access the Tags fields when you're in that screen.
Let me know if you cannot for some reason.

It might not be used in the end it mostly in order to have an idea of what it could look like at this size. it's only gonna be the run cycle for that reason. the character animation was mostly based on Shanoa.

I'm fond of the hair color and the pose. Is she looking down at the floor though? Does she wear glasses?She's actually facing forward or whatever the correct term is. I based it off the original sprite that's in the original game so yea. Also she's not wearing any glasses. Though any tips on how to make it not look like she's looking down?

This was actually based on the character you play as in a CV clone i've played though little did i know was that she's actually a generic character class in ragnarok online (didn't stop me from making this single sprite though). was thinking of making a full sprite sheet but it'd be useless since i doubt anyone would use it.

Well, I wouldn't say they're THAT detailed..if you study them carefully,most of the sprites have like 16 or more colors only,and shading realy needs work in some cases i.e his(i cud be wrong,mugen community refer to serio as 'she') hugh sheet,i rely think they are nt the best out there so I decided to make my own! :DYeah im doing some work on Mathias though. i put the old sheet on here about 3 pages back i only have regular paint. i cant find an ms paint program that dosnt require RAR. Im also working on_------------------------------------------------------------------------------------m (sorry my kitten climbed on my keyboard) jacket-less soma sprites

That's great and all..but spritin' mathias is one thing,animating him isI know, right now im just trying to get the designs right, then ill work on animating him if there are no more critiques on how he looks, ill start animating right away! :)

Looks pretty neat so far..may I suggest that you try adding a neutral tone(between the brightes and darkest colours respectively) to the cloth aton which outfit his normal one or his knight one (the one with the gold tassel)
his leggings.shading looks rather simplistic as it is now..:-)
Cool i'll look into that. Thanks. Sometimes it almost seems like it's easier to tell when something works when you see it in gameplay even though animted gifs' are the closest way to tell. I think those jumping sprites will probably be better suited perhaps than what i had for the him cause of his cape. I'm guessing the last two sprites of the jumping one don't need the leg to hit the ground. Don't the players have some sort of landing sprites. I mean it seems characteritic of alucard. In theory i think that would happen then again their would be far more frames than i have, though it would appear i have the correct amount on the standing and duck attack sprites. I do think the jumping ones should line up the same aswell. Maybe i'll just continue a similar pattern except use the cape like in the sprites you've shown for the jumping sprites. I almost tend to think the cape on the stand and ducking attack would slide forward a slight bit thus making it smoosh up against his back leg in later frames. Well i'm gonna sit down again and try and get something that makes more sense for the jumping sprites for sure.

You know, when I look at the whip animation from here, it looks like it uses PoR's chain links, but when I open it in a new tab, it magically switches to SotN's chain links. Are my eyes playing tricks on me?Nope, they are in fact SoTN Chain Links, I would some Rips from the PoR Whips so I can design extra whips from that source using the SoTN Material.

To be honest, I don't really like the graphic of that whip, it change size. The PSX whip gfx and animation were already great and still the best IMO.I can make the PSX, but its about 25+ frames, I can Redo the Pre-Extend links to be consistant all the way through.

I was wondering if people can help me think of some games that had some cool Desert stages that I could use for fan game that i am working on. I am thinking of something with giant sand dunes that the character can run diagonally up and down from. I am currently using parts from the Metal Slug 3 Desert stage but I need more. I am thinking of a stage from the Neo Geo, SNES, TG-16, or Genesis era's. Can someone give me some ideas? Maybe something I can look up on VGMaps to use? I want to make a stage similar to the one from Portrait Of Ruin....

The buster shot has to go though. Why edit after doing everything else from scratch? It's way too noticeable and doesn't even look like fire.

if anyone could give me suggestions to make the priest less "average" looking i'd appreciate it.
i don't think fur lining fits well for a priest but here's a test
now that i look at it, the fur movement (and cross) looks unnatural, so i included a static shot.
downplayed the fur collar and shortened the bangs, gave him kind of a mullet, made the hair more blonde, added a beard and steel-toed boots. it's safe to say that i suck at doing sprites...i'd ask you guys to be gentle but honest critique makes for better improvements.
decided against many of my original changes, made it so he's a standard priest: black shirt, black trench coat, blue jeans, and brown leather boots. i'm toying around a tattered coat look - this is what i done so far. almost looks like batman's cowl...click on the image to get at the animated gif. i wanted him to be the chuck norris of my fan game so i gave him a walker texas ranger beard.

That looks awesome. I love the disheveled look. And I'm kinda glad you took out the cross chain. When he was running, it didn't look right. Seemed too rigid and such. Would still be a nice touch but only if you could animate it properly.

i agree with you Claimh Solais, the cross chain is an iconic necessity, but i also gotta agree with TheouAegis -
unless animated properly, i think that cross chain may regrettably be cut... unless someone wants to help me with it, maybe?

I like the coat, but if I were you I'd try making a new whipping animation. The one that Julius uses is too distinctively his.

Hey i dont know if this is the wrong area to post this but way back in this thread page 2 or so i think vedora kindom did some leon sprites. Some awesome programmer dude and he must be teaming up to make a leon belmont 2 d game. Check this out i found it on youtube:A abundance of too many reused SOTN sprites for my taste..not really a bad thing.... It looks like it could use some extra polish, the Leon sprites are the only thing that look original to me...the jumping looks terrible. I know it's early, but if he could fix some issues this could be really sweet.

These are all compatible with the "Castlevania" style of sprite heights, widths, etc. Dracula and Golem are even the size of the usual 'tall enemy'.

One being Abrahm Van Helsing(not Abraham from brahm stoker maybe even Adam Van Helsing, a Dr, Jeckle/Mister Hyde player, and a ninja(which i only started spriting), i thought of coming up with a girl from old england too. But never really came up with any sprites for anyone other than the ninja. I have it mapped out in my head with Abrahm or main player, same with Dr jeckyl sorta. But yeah here is the ninja:

Yeah i know not too origanal kinda a morph from maxim kinshine. BUt it's a start perhaps. I almost like the blue on his shirt but maybe darker. Probably not a mask either, he needs to be different, more direct, not as stealth as a normal ninja.

That last run animation looks really solid I like it. I like the way it leans forward which looks more natural for a full speed run than the other one which suited a jog better than a run.
It sure is going to be hard to get anything done this week with all this nice weather lol. It's killing my efforts. I may have to go into night mode here if I want to accomplish anything and just avoid the sunny daytime distraction. Stay up all night when there is nothing else to do but sit here and work on my projects!
Yeah, Donofrio, sorry i failed to mention that. I got a tad excited when i heard"the bloodletting" yesterday. Yes indeed, the ninja is a morph of donofrio's maxim kinshine. Very nice job too with maxim thus far,like the sprite run. I must say i like the fact that sprite artist are making new versions of some of the game boy advance games, all of which i haven't yet played. The juste belmont is very well done also. Solblaze stopped onto the forum with an amazing looking nathan graves too. Be nice to see all these players in action at some point in time. Wether Serio's game, a hack, or custom fan games. Nice too see such talent. It makes me wanna sharpen my skills too. I've been on somewhat of a code learning tear lately though. Starting to learn this and that.

Uhhhh no, that implies that they'd end up as a compressed picture (usually a Jpeg). Thanks, though.
I'm specifically looking for either:
-OoE screencaps (from an emulator so that they have proper resolution and clarity) of every stage (just one per stage will do, usually a nice part of the stage).
OR
-a completed OoE save file (.sav, so that I can do it myself).
No$gba runs well enough on my system that the game is playable.

Was it POR? You asked me about something a while back and some of my emulators won't run on my machine at the moment since I am using win8 cp but I do have good news! I am actually glad you reminded me by bringing this up. I did manage to get my haunted castle rom to work! I captured a bunch of the frames from the statue crumbling. I think there is enough if not all of the frames to remake it. So now that I am thinking of it I am going to go rip them up and put them in a sheet for you. :)Thanks anywayz but, someone posted something similar a few ago....lol Anyways about the PoR deal I just need the maps because they aren't widely available on the net. Also on a side note I could also use the stage maps for Contra Hard Corps on the genesis, if someone is experienced with ripping from the Genesis emulators...
NOTE: I checked this is the complete animation. The first frame on the left is the normal state of the object the next frame forward are the break animation. It disappears after the last frame and the contents are shown be it a heart or whatever.

Anyway, I'd been checking the post. I don't know why, but I kept looking above the post instead of under, so I must have kept missing it. I face palmed pretty hard when I saw your post here. Checked over there and felt Like a tool. Only made it worse that I forgot I was wearing my heavy ring... ug. I just assumed you might have been too busy. That project of yours is quite an undertaking.
About the advice... it helps a lot, but my problem is more the weapon animation itself. The sheet I got from the spriter's resource is good quality and it has all of the animations, They're just bunched together (the standards with the diagonals) so I cant make heads or tails of how its supposed to animate.
If you need something I'd be happy to help. Honestly, I'd have done it without the trade. I've been OD HYPE to see this since I first heard of it. ;D I don't know what U2U is though. I know it may sound stupid, but I'm being for real. I've been out of commission for a much longer while than I would have liked. Is this a term for something, or some newfangled skype thing? Once again, I'm really sorry for not knowing this. Kind of embarrassed to ask actually... :-[

Reason being is i would like to at some point use this with that 3d zplotting background for a particular room. I still have to learn how that kind of code works. And if anyone who knows would care to explain i'd be greatful. Sadly though the image here will not do. I need the overlapping sprites removed. I know backgrounds while taking screenshots can be removed. However the room is so large that i am not sure where in the room the actual image lies. it isn't a locked in 320x240 view. Like where the hell the middle or median of the room would be. there is a way to remove all that hoopla(sprites etc). But i really dont' wanna have to cut and paste. That will be a headache i don't wanna deal with seeing its a flattened 3d image. IF anyone can be of assistance it would be greatly appreaciated. I am looking to do the same with other backdrops like buildings, and perhaps the clocktower. Well ok thanks guys!
There isn't really a location, dude.
This particular room is comprised of several 3D objects on a dark gray (24,24,24) background.
It is not a set of tiles or anything like that.
You need to make a 3D box.
If you were gonna replicate this room with 2D objects, the perspective as you climb the room will look off, as the windows will not look right.
If you really have to attempt it, it would be like this:
-Far Background - a solid color (that 'dark gray' behind the altar cross)
-The altar in the back
-A 'picture frame' composed of the left window, the right window, the floor reflections, and the ceiling archway, with a transparency in the center of the frame so that you can see the altar.
-Repeat 4 more times.
-The line in the bottom of the center
You would have to include alphatransparency grayscale lights on the right side of every pictureframe background to simulate the window's lighting, and set the alpha type to something like additive light, so that each light in front of it brightens up like in the picture.
The windows will NOT look right when you superjump or climb those stairs in the stage, though, because the perspective will be off.
An alternative would be to find a script that does something like the floor effect in Street Fighter II games, and apply such an effect vertically to the left and right of the stage... five times... each time with a different window. It's work but not impossible.

Nothing wrong with a little jiggle. I can tell you from years of going to ren faire, that short of hard leather armor, there is always a little jiggle.

This is something I whipped up last night; it's meant to be a more SotN-esque sprite of Rondo of Blood Richter Belmont's design, more accurate to his design and the graphic style of SotN. Yes, this was inspired by Thaddeus' project a few years back (too arsed right now to find the topic for y'all), but his were edits of Fake Trevor's sprites, whereas this is a fix of Richter's original graphics (I did use references from Trevor for Richter's head and loin-cloth, however).
To a certain somebody (they'll know who they are): don't worry, this isn't gonna take up my attention in the least; this is just something I did out of boredom. I don't think I'll even do much more for this, so anybody's free to take this and expand on it. (all I ask is credit if you do :P)

Only thing that I could point out if you want it to be more smooth is to insert another frame during his 'step' animation while whipping.Hmm, you may be right. Sadly, I'm on my other laptop, so I can't fix it at the moment.
Ok so I increased to color count and made the leg area more detailed, I think I will rework the shading a bit after this though.
Also probably will use a softer version of the leg palette for the back leg to simulate shadow and depth more.
Edit: noticed a mistake in shading depth with the first two frames, fixed that.
ok so I did notice an error in the final frame, this v3 should fix it.

I made another whip animation for Trevor. It's supposed to be a bit more fluid, and is based on ZiZ's whip, which you can find somewhere on one of the thread pages. (I can't remember where) I haven't added a 'whip blur' yet, but I will soon.

Seeing as I've gotten a bit into Contra lately, I thought I'd post this. I'm working on a Richter skin for Bill Rizer in Super Mario Bros. Crossover as a tribute to the Vamprotector project, and I figured I'd put together the running animation.
Wow, thanks! ;DWell, the power-ups are going to be from Contra capsules. I don't know if you know, but basically there will be a weapon fusion system. I.E. Holy Water + Whip = Ice Whip. And all the regular Castlevania sub-weapons will have 3 varying forms increasing in power as well as an item crash. The whips will all have an Item Crash as well. This looks cool though. If you want to make more ideas, you can post them on my Vamprotector thread and I will look through them. If I use one or more of them in my game, I will credit you accordingly! Just make sure they are PNG files. Good work there!
I also have an idea for what the powerups could look like in Vamprotector. (see attached file)

I would start there for you. Unless you put some effort into it yourself, don't set yourself for disappointment when no one responds to your threads asking for help...

These are some spriteworks done by me, depicting SotN if it had been ported to the NES. Some considerations are important:
-I know that it's pratically impossible to do what I did on the real NES. My intention is more to "imitate" the NES style than to do a complete, 100% NES limited art. It's an artwork intended for "imagining", not "developing".
-Alucard is made of two sprites, Mega-Man style. One for himself, another for his cape, which can change colors depending on what he is wearing. I'm still thinking if it would not be cooler to change his darkest color to depict the current cape instead of having a new sprite, like the old games used to do when wanting to show you that the character had a different equipment on. Oh well~
-Palette color-count on screen/per object, and tile-sizes/positioning were respected. HOWEVER real NES hardware palette limitations were not... Probably... A NES game palette is not free to pick an choose any color you want. It requires you to choose a set of colors from a pre-determined palette, then choosing the RGB inclination of hues and saturation for these colors you have choosen for the game. It's pretty obvious I simply picked any color that fancied me, even though most of then came from the original NES palette... Probably...
-I did my best to respect the 256 bg tile-count per screenshot, but considering the nature of the game, this is one of the aspects that demonstrate how it'd be impossible on the real NES. The "Load CD" room being the greatest offender of the 256 bg tile-count rule. Even though a friend of mine counted the tiles and said they were ok, I'm still pretty sure it goes beyond the limit somewhere...
-In my defense I scream "Summer Carnival '92 Recca!" and may the art gods be with me xD

I will have you know that I specifically searched for Richter 8-bit sprites models to avoid. Also I found yours and Jorge's, and I was kinda sad with myself because I though mine looked extremelly amateurish and unpolished. Even so, I pressed on. I really hope you don't think I've stolen your sprite, since the only one I have knowledge about is a mostly "white-ish" one. Also, it'd be really dumb of me to steal your work and post it here where you dwell (and other people are well aware about it).

The cape isn't the problem, it's the legs. Garments on the human body take their shaped based on the position of the body under them. Try doing another version of him walking without his cape so you can be sure you get the leg positioning right, and then draw the cape over it. So far the cape looks fine and has a pretty natural drag to it.

In theory, if I get her cloak animations done and her stair animations done, she can become a complete spritesheet.

It's been a while since anybody's been on here. The thread was almost a dead-thread.
New stylish Richter. YAY. Take look at my Richter V2 edit. Now take a look at Konami's Richter V2 edit. Mine's better (anything is better than those konami sprites) than a professional spriter who get's paid for his work, and I'm only 12. That just shows how lazy people are. I spent 10 MINUTES EDITING THOSE SPRITES.

Hey guys, I know it's been awhile but I was wondering if you could help me locate a sheet I once found? I had found it on another forum, but I forget how or why, and I can't find it again. Said sheet was a full sprite sheet of the whips from Portrait of Ruin, all the swinging frames, ect.
Reason being is my laptop decided to up and die on me, and while I still have all of what I had, and was able to relocate most of the things, this is one of the tougher ones to relocate. It also features Johnathon as a place holder example for some of the sprite frames.
Well, now you have two sheets. :P

Still have to fix his robe lapel things, as they're clearly mirrored and thus fucked-up in form; but the movement I need is there, and that's what matters.

Because I was a member on Inc. back when Old Inc. was still around. You, luckily, didn't join up until after the board revamp. Be glad you did, because Old Inc. was the stuff of nightmares. The shit that went on there is legendary (and often infamous) with the oldies on the boards now. Some of the stuff was just fucking hilarious, though:
The Discord Incident, in which one of the then-mods hacked the forum config and gave everybody mod powers. You can imagine the absolute chaos that ensued.
Favic, which I wasn't around for, was a lovely time in which the Internet's favorite little shitbag had some fun at Inc.
And then there was Bearz. A glorious, shining example of why ten-year-olds should not be allowed on the Internet (assuming he was indeed ten like he claimed, or just a master troll, we still don't know), this guy once started a "which member would you rape" thread, made some of the absolute worst sprites ever and refused to take any crit for them or make changes, turned his sprite thread into, IIRC, and eighty-something page fiasco of a thread that was moved to the Smeghead boards. Oh, and we can't forget that he was a paleontologist with an dick bigger than the Searz Tower. And he had like three alts which he used to obviously defend his base account.
That was a fun thread. I used to read it just to laugh my ass off, before Old Inc.'s domain plug got pulled. :'(
Yeah, be glad you joined up when you did. People are much, much more civil than they used to be, and the mod selection is far better than it was. I can put up with Inc. now because Inc. isn't nearly as bad as other places and people I've run into.

I considered the idea of having Hyunkel armor as a hidden special item in my game, but i realised that the size of my character is too small to display correctly the detail of the armor. Sad.

I even went as far as to suggest that the first contest should be designing special Award sprites and then letting the moderators or the dungeonites (by polling) select the winners. :o

Pixel Joint (http://www.pixeljoint.com/) also has no real prizes for contests, and they happen weekly. Medals are awarded, and of course, exposure is also "awarded". The same could be done here. Award medals to the contestants, and expose the work somewhere prominent (Like on the forum's banner or something?? I dunno).

what i may do here is take the snake tail and make his mouth shut during the stance(while his tongue slitehrs in and out of his mouth). The snake was the hardest part and took 3 times as long to do. I still feel like i can perfect more on the snake a bit and the feet area. But otherwise it's pretty much what i though it might look like by.
I would like to discuss with Plotwist possible moves..though some have already popped into my mind.
OK, since I made a lot of awards and wanted to give my input with some ideas for the sprite contest, but arrived too late and it was already decided that only one award was allowed, I'm dumping the sprites here! You're free to use them as you will EXCEPT for the Golden Bat which is this forum's.

Here is the rationale I used to create them (plus some other sprites to accompany the suggestions I had in mind):
The first three awards follow a Castlevania Enemy Hierarchy: Golden Vampire Bat (Dracula) for the 1st place, the Silver Reaper Scythe (Death) for the 2nd place, and lastly the Bronze Medusa Head (Annoying/Hard enemy) for the 3th place.
Then I made special awards, too, based on the discussion I read at the thread and some of Uzo's quips:
-The Alloy Vampire Killer was a special award for the Honorable Mentions contestant. Sometimes we want to give the 1st place for two people, or they come to a Draw but one of them is too good to be 2nd, but not as good to be 1st. So they get an Alloy Vampire Killer. Meant to represent the Belmont's stuggle to defeat Dracula (symbolized by the 1st place winner trophy).
-The Alloy Pot Roast was a special award for artworks that are very original, but lack pixel skill. Different from the honorable mention above, though, this one doesn't look good enough to deserve one of the main three, but you wish it did, as the concept is too good to overlook, and the artist only needs more skill. (Meant to represent a player that tries with all his soul to beat Castlevania, but can't. He does, however, get to find a Pot Roast, and finding a Pot Roast is always welcome, but it doesn't help him beat the game, yet. It does makes him confident in trying again, though).
-The Heart Brooch was for people who took part on the contest, but won nothing. It's a "Participation Prize" and denotes a spriting devotee who is still too rough to truly compete. It serves as a spur to keep the artist spriting! (Meant to represent the commonplace-ness of the Heart. Everyone can get a Heart, but not everyone can beat the game)
-The last one, hoo boy... The Graveyard Duck prize would be awarded to those artworks edging on trollish. It's so bad it's good. Being bad at spriting, though, is not reason to win it. You would've to be so bad and the art must have such a sarcastic theme to it, that it wraps around and becomes actually good. Would be a very rare trophy to win. (Meant to represent that famed translation, that's so freakishly bad and out of place, that it's actually iconic and funny, deserving it's own place on the Castlevania lore).
You're free to use the sprites however you wish!

So, while watching Uzo curse at the gods for dying so much at Kid Dracula, I decided to actually upgrade Kid Dracula's sprite. Lelygax went further and proposed for me to create more forms for Kid Dracula beyond his Bat form. So I did:

For Kid Dracula himself, I made his colors a little different than the originally intended. He now has a wolf form, his bat form is an upgrade from the form he takes in the intro of the game (which boggles my mind as to why they didn't use this one ingame), and a mist form that is enabled when Kid Dracula holds his breath, and persists until he has to breathe again lol.

OK, since I made a lot of awards and wanted to give my input with some ideas for the sprite contest, but arrived too late and it was already decided that only one award was allowed, I'm dumping the sprites here!
Here are the awards. Only the Golden Bat is on the contest:

Here is the rationale I used to create them (plus some other sprites to accompany the suggestions I had in mind):
The first three awards follow a Castlevania Enemy Hierarchy: Golden Vampire Bat (Dracula) for the 1st place, the Silver Reaper Scythe (Death) for the 2nd place, and lastly the Bronze Medusa Head (Annoying/Hard enemy) for the 3th place.
Then I made special awards, too, based on the discussion I read at the thread and some of Uzo's quips:
-The Alloy Vampire Killer was a special award for the Honorable Mentions contestant. Sometimes we want to give the 1st place for two people, or they come to a Draw but one of them is too good to be 2nd, but not as good to be 1st. So they get an Alloy Vampire Killer. Meant to represent the Belmont's stuggle to defeat Dracula (symbolized by the 1st place winner trophy).
-The Alloy Pot Roast was a special award for artworks that are very original, but lack pixel skill. Different from the honorable mention above, though, this one doesn't look good enough to deserve one of the main three, but you wish it did, as the concept is too good to overlook, and the artist only needs more skill. (Meant to represent a player that tries with all his soul to beat Castlevania, but can't. He does, however, get to find a Pot Roast, and finding a Pot Roast is always welcome, but it doesn't help him beat the game, yet. It does makes him confident in trying again, though).
-The Heart Brooch was for people who took part on the contest, but won nothing. It's a "Participation Prize" and denotes a spriting devotee who is still too rough to truly compete. It serves as a spur to keep the artist spriting! (Meant to represent the commonplace-ness of the Heart. Everyone can get a Heart, but not everyone can beat the game)
-The last one, hoo boy... The Graveyard Duck prize would be awarded to those artworks edging on trollish. It's so bad it's good. Being bad at spriting, though, is not reason to win it. You would've to be so bad and the art must have such a sarcastic theme to it, that it wraps around and becomes actually good. Would be a very rare trophy to win. (Meant to represent that famed translation, that's so freakishly bad and out of place, that it's actually iconic and funny, deserving it's own place on the Castlevania lore).

My only nitpicks on the Alucard are that his side-facing boot and foot look really skinny (even for him) and that the crotch of his pants is way too low.

Unfortunately, stupid old me being a stickler for details ended up nearly running out of colors from doing the boots alone, resulting in his under armor sharing colors with his skin, and his vest with his pants, among other things. Looks good! I would use solid colors for the vest rather than that checked pattern you've got going, but that's because I'm thinking of what might happen if one goes full-spritesheet (that mesh will do funky things when set up in an animation sprite).Well, not doing what I did there would probably break the illusion that it's not using skin colors (15 + transparency color limit and all), and like I said, I'm a stickler for details. :V

Arikado sprites in SotN format made a long time ago for my personal '99 project (which also started a long time ago, but in text only). Arikado will be a playable character if one day I ever release a fangame of my own. He's one of four playable characters (Julius, Lenora Belnades, Arikado and Timothy DaNasty), each having active role in the storyline, which is told in "chapters" where the protagonism is switched among these four characters. No, you do not control them all at the same time, you only control one in his own chapter, and each chapter interwines with the others. And: DaNasty is an enemy, not a friend. So yes, you get to control a foe too. I can speak more about it in a new thread if someone is curious.

To the left, original Arikado and Alucard sprites. To the right, Arikado in "Arikado mode" and "Alucard mode". He would have two gameplay modes, where he switches between his true power, and his repressed power, through a story-driven gimmick. Yes, the aesthetic change would be mostly only his hair, but there is a reason for that: I find it simply ridiculous that Alucard's armor "appears" when he needs to enter his vampiric powers. Thus, the hair is the only change, as the power supressor he uses also makes his hair short and black, and when removed, returns his hair to it's platinum color and length. "Alucard" is playable in a business suit, but with flowy, white hair, but his gameplay changes drastically. Also, there is a price to pay to enter "Alucard" mode, though :P
I have such an ungodly amount of work to do in other things, that this project might never lift ground :(

Ok uuh, I just saw it and I must say I'm kinda surprised and SWEAR TO GOD I hadn't seen it. Just so ya know, I can't sprite this so fast and claim the idea as my own in such a short time lol, but the idea to post about it DID came from Tears of Pain, considering there is an Alucard screenshot there. That specific screenshot is what made me post this specific sprite.
Donoffrio is witness and can attest that this sprite and concept exists before you typed it up.
Maybe a demonstration that great minds think alike????
The sudden armor-spawning would make more sense if CV Alucard had Hellsing Alucard powers, in which his form is subjective and he can "savestate" his body and outfit. But he doesn't.

On your sprite, shift the hips a little, right now it looks pretty disjointed. Also, shift the upper part of the back cross a little too to follow the contour of the back better.

@VladCT: I'm back at the job but IIRC the right leg from the shin down is a teeny bit off, but its an easy fix. Select the foot from under to maybe 2 pixels up from where the ankle starts. Drag it over 1 pixel to the left and it should align properly with the knee, thigh, and hips joints. from there you can add or remove a pixel or 2 until you feel it looks just how you want it to.You sure about that? From where I'm looking, the leg looks kinda bent now. I'll just attach the sprites for convenience this time, along with the previous version for comparison.
Let it be known that I hate Morris' idle. Those subtle leg changes are a pain in the ass.

That run cycle was actually collab work between me and CyberDragon10k back at the Cv fighter forums.

I can't put it into my hack if the sprites size are too big to fit in the ROM. Like that Juste you made. There are a lot of limitation to do a sprites hack unfortunately.
And just to let people know, I don't work on the DXC Richter (By Donoffrio) hack anymore. It's because Donoffrio's DXC Richter sprites size are too big (too wide to be exact).

Thought it'd be fun to see the Contra Hard Corps easter egg boss in this fashion, I added my own take on what he'd look like in more detail, specifically the head.

Here's my attempt, only using the first frame of Konami's Richter, the rest I made following Serio's work as a guide and my own intuition referencing other CV sprites.

Im not sure what ya mean? How they dont line up right vertically? Probably my placement of the backgrounds y. Thats all I see and I had to zoom in to 3x to see that in the ingame shot. Ive never noticed it while playing

needs moar frames :V But, as it is right now, it looks kinda choppy to me. At least for a SotN style animation.SotN Alucard had over 30 frames just for walking Xp

So I tried mockup up something to contribute for IGABonus so I decided to make a candle with stand.
The design seems ok and so far I am satisfied with the animation, might go back and do further shading lightcast by the flame.

Looks nice, Don. There are only a couple problems: One, perspective doesn'y work like that. The top of the cross would not have as much visible.

Another problem is the contrast. There is not enough in this picture to tell the difference between details, like the sahding on the stand, our the outline of the candle. My usual combo is: 2 light colors, 3 mid tone, 2 dark, and then one near black color for defenition.
Yeah I thought people might think that, you are in fact not actually seeing the top of the cross there but a spherical edge. I'll take up your advice on the coloring though and see if I can use that to clear up the confusion. Thanks for the feedback :)

My two cents: He's lifting the legs too high from the ground to step foward, and one of the legs is "snapping" when transitioning from the "lifted" to the "on floor" positions.
Right now, it looks like he's skipping or that he's adjusting his pants without his hands, somewhat.
This can be fixed by moving the legs one pixel down, and the snapping leg one pixel foward just before the frame it touches the floor.

Thats why i think the best way to do a better whip attack its to make something like the whip from Indiana Jones in Snes, you can see the snapback but perhaps the whip make damage since its magic (alchemy) so it have sence that do damage in all the parts of the whip to evil creatures.

I have a lot to say about this. I'll ask you to please not take it personally. I'll be separating all critique in bullet points:
- As the character walks, he bounces a lot. As ProjectDread mentioned, it looks like he's walking on the moon. When making the character bounce due to walking, in such a small scale and space, you will want to make him bounce two pixels MAX. For Castlevania-styled sprites, 1 pixel works just fine.
- His torso is twisting too much to the sides as he walks. Not only that, but it twists to one side only and then goes back to facing foward instead of twisting to the other side. If you're going to make it twist, make it twist VERY little to BOTH sides, and place all the movement in the arm instead. He seems to be walking pretty casually, so no need for so much twisting.
- The feet are going too high when leaving the floor. You'll want to leave only two pixels TOPS between the foot and the floor. Due to this, the character's lower-legs are moving pretty haphazardly, changing sizes and snapping into places that make it look awkward.
- The fartest arm seems to be much shorter than the arm next to the camera. The arm next to the camera seems to get shorter as it moves backwards. This is due to the forearm's golden detail not being shortened to give us the impression of perspective correctly, or the shoulder not being in position to show us how he's lifting the entire arm to get it to that position.
That's mostly it. Fixing these issues, everything else will fall in place accordingly, I believe.

Excellent use of color man. It looks great. The only thing that looks odd to me is the raised arm. It looks pretty short, and doesn't appear to bend enough to justify the short length of it. It kind of looks like he has only a lower arm, and the elbow is connected to the shoulder.
If you change the shading on his hand to a darker shade (like his face) it could be the arm swinging away from the camera.
As it is, it looks like it's in front of him, and short a bit. Just a bit, though.
I'm guessing it's holy for Ceres and dark for Pluto?
I added more colors to the sprite and made two new versions. As always feedback is greatly appreciated.

I much like the first version. It may be the animation speed, though.

The cape on B looks better.
I feel that the proportions are a little off. Specifically, the torso seems a smidge too long and the legs a smidge too short.
Also, there is a disparity with the animation of the left arm and the right arm. It looks like the left arm is swinging normally, but the right looks like he's pumping it diagonally down rather than swinging it.
Oh, and I might consider adding one pixel to the cape's collar so it doesn't look so flat at the back of the head.
I've clearly noted your second point though, I started out with two colors and went to four. The highlight on the shoulder uses a brighter color than the rest but I started to think that adding it into the rest of the cloak would be too much. Is there one specific point you think I could improve on?
Yes, in fact there is, but I was in a rush and couldn't type it out.
I like the first one specifically because of the contrast on the cape. The second one looks very nice, but I can't really see the red shadow on it. I mean, I CAN see it, but I don't feel the weight.
However, the second sprite's cape does have better pixel work than the first, which looks noisy.
So, my opinion is that the first cape would look better with the colors it already has, but with the pixel work on the cape from the second one.

I think at this point, you should do basically what The Plot Twist has been doing with his title, and make a mock up game from scratch. You have come a long way on improving your skills and it's looking really good at this point.
You should make a story, and plot a game on a thread. Maybe a programmer will see your stuff and then pick it up to be turned into an actual fan-game.

Ok guys, tell me if you like this one better than the previous one:The animation is freaky, not the animation itself, but the technique is... as a compliment. it's like mode 7 rotations and a sorta low-res 3d model sorta feel
It kinda looks like a zombified Grant, I mean if that's what you're aiming for. Question, do you really need 20 frames for a stance animation alone?why not? Castlevania has sorta-kinda-sometimes did the whole many frames thing. the more the smoother, also would look amazing if every aspect of sotn had at least double the frames in animation, it would look so smooth
Thanks guys 8) I picked up a program called spriter pro. It lets you take sprites in segments and add bones to animate them. I took the SOTN version and chopped them up into segments to do it. Enough so that I have done all his animations except for his pain, death, wall climb and subweapon throws last night.

As for the colors: I see your point on some colors making no difference, I was experimenting a bit with them to see what did and didn't work. Below I made several iterations of the same pose with varying amounts of colors. Could you point out where I'm going to far? Would generally expanding the palette at this point just be too much for this size of sprite or are the shading colors I chose just 'wrong'?

Here it is. I did nothing much. Just edited the leg and the cape's lining. The darkest color was indeed not useful.

One of the things that I dropped that vastly improved my technique are outlines. I don't draw using outlines anymore. I do color clusters and then I detail each cluster independently (just like you do on a painting).
Everything I do is on the old fashioned way: Pixel per pixel on MS Paint. I use my laptop's touchpad to do pixel art. I don't have a mouse, but it's much easier with a mouse, I can say that much.
This seems like something I would like to try doing but would you still at least draw stick figures when making animations?

I personally don't find that to be an issue. His head doesn't turn because he's still looking in the same direction (the enemy) to attack. The leg doesn't turn because he's leaning on it to keep his posture.
However it does look a tiny bit strange he turns one leg and not the other. But the animation is good, nonetheless.

My suggestion is for you to act out the actual movement. You head would naturally turn with the direction your torso is turning. Maybe that's why it looks out to me.Naturally you would move yes, attack moves executed by trained fighters are far from natural though. More often than not active training is to suppress natural urges in favor of better movement.
Either way, I think acting out the movement yourself before you sprite will help you in a long ways on animating.
What parentage are you at finishing Alucard?It's hard to give a percentage since different animations require different amounts of work.

Yes I have some in mind, including trying to bite the player and jumping above him in an arc while fireballs rain down. Pretty standard stuff.
For a sprite such as this, either having the texture applied to a 3D object, or dividing it in segments would be needed. For me to animate the frames for the individual segments (head, body segment, fire piece) would be piss easy, but I have no idea how the engine or programmer would pull off the movements.
Are you using a standard engine or a custom one?

It looks decent, technically speaking, but it does look uninspired. Though I admit it's hard to do something original and appealing without the use of special effects.
I will admit that I too find it not all too original, I tried several other methods that I didn't post here but they all felt off like they didn't fit the theme.
For now I think I will stick to this style until I can come up with something better.
On a side note, do you think more frames would still be ok or would it be overkill?

It looks like he moves one leg forward and one leg backwards. It seems a bit strange. (offset the sprite?) Naturally you'd move one leg back or one leg forward not both right?

Like I said, I need it for RPG Maker 2003. As in a bird's-eye-view type RPG. Spriters Resource has sprites for all the characters,
but for sidescrolling games.
What would be the best way to properly extract the tilesets from the DS games with proper palettes? I imagine it may be more complicated than this.
First sprite was originaly made for some kind of a contest, but then I lost interest in it.
Originaly it was supposed to be a mage, but I didn't really like it so I made it to look like a modern age Richter Belmont, just for the hell of it.
I don't intend to finish him, anyone can use him for whatever reason they want to, if you are editing it I'd like you to credit me for the original, albeit it's not necessary.
The others were made just recently so that I can practice NES limitations, because I like challenges.
They have their original sprites, new sprites with original palettes and with palettes I intend to use for now.
Simon is somewhat based on his SC4 and Chronicles designs, as is zombie and of course Alucard is based of his SOTN design.
For now I will continue on remaking sprites from Castlevania 1, and maybe some from Castlevania 3 so I'd like to hear some critiques.
If I learn what is what in Tile molester I might even make this into a hack (when I try to edit Castlevania 1 it gets pretty groovy,
I don't recognize anything, Castlevania 3 is on the other hand pretty easy to edit, I made a hack once but I somehow lost it),
but for now these aren't used anywhere.

Would chosing colors that are more contrasting and less grayish make him look more like a protagonist?

I shortly worked for Esco at 2 points in time (until I started slowing down the progress on sprites and generally annoying him), and the latter time I worked for him I was actually doing animations for Richter.
I'm just curious if any of the few animations I did for him actually ended up being used.

Hmmm...Not to sound rude, but hardly anyone is going to take so much work for free.
As for Frames, I'm envisioning the idling, walking, running/sprinting, jumping, clinging to edges, wall climbing, blood drinking (rather from the neck or maybe she drink blood from the distance Legacy of Kain style perhaps from a spell or maybe she can drain all the blood of her enemies in the room with a powerful spell), melee attack (from swords to claw attacks), guns firing, vampiric power abilities (like shapeshifting into a cloud of bats, wolf, mist, swarm of rats, and also majority of Dracula's powers and course borrowing a few VtM disciplines like Obtenabration, Thaumaturgy, Necromancy, etc) and of course her own Dracula style "True Form" being a elegantly beautiful or Deity like "Vampire Lord" who is nude (with visible nipples of course) with bat wings and vampiric features that is caked in blood with a red aura around her (well I imagine her looking like a Mesopotamian Goddess as opposed to Dracula's monstrosity). Basically like Alucard's moves pretty much.
As for style I'm envisioning several appearances for her first being her Gothic Punk appearance wearing jeans, a battle leather jacket, ti shirt, sunglasses (at midnight) or basically like a female Andrew Elderitch or Sonya Blue from Nancy Collin's "Sunglasses after Dark" books or basically the typical Tim Bradsheet artwork for Vampire: The Masquerade that was inspired from Severn from Near Dark.
Her Second Appearance is more of the Selene from Underworld and Blade with the "Trenchcoat and Katanas and guns" look which she later 'updates' to.
Well she can also have a optional appearance well borrowing from my earlier "Carmilla" Victorian Ballgown appearance here (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php?topic=8957.0) (both leg slit and non leg slit) which she has rather unique frames for example she can seduce and dance with Dead Nobles before drinking their blood especially the Dead Nobles and Dancing Nobles won't attack or harm you when you wear the ballgown in the Dancehall, Opera House, Ballroom etc areas.

Getting people excited is the best way to get em work for free. Have high standards, post up some sexy screenshots and some teaser videos and some prior examples of your work and people will feel more comfortable dedicating large amounts of time to helping you with your project. Simply posting "sprite this for me" while giving the artist nothing but a list of demands with no frame of reference and no context under which the sprites will be used, man, that's a recipe for disaster!

depends on whether by "sotn style" you mean richter specifically
sotn recycled rondo sprites mostly, and based on that the right has the marginally more accurate palette
but the left is more in-line with how sotn handles palettes
i'd say meet in the middle--the left has more accurate color usage, but the right has closer shading (specifically, the left has too many darks and puts too much emphasis on little tiny highlights rather than on overall shaping as symphony handles those things--one such instance is that there are two colors for a tiny shoulder highlight, where the highlight should only be one color at its brightest at that scale and the second slightly darker color should cover more area than it does)

draw out a looping sine curve in the direction you want movement to go, then move it X amount in that direction per frame, and then use the curve to draw the shape of the cloth--when the curve gets to a frame where it loops back on itself, you have a nice smooth animation

Hey, I have a question/request. This is more for ripping.I intend to rip those sprites for a personal project so I should have them in a few days. Not a very quick process because I can't automate it, it's very different from the original PS and PSP games and the graphics are stored separately from the meta data so I have no idea where that information is.
Would anyone be able to rip the Sega Saturn version of Maria? I have an incomplete sheet here which I've included in the attachments. Which is basically a compiled version of an old zip folder that used to be on the internet. Which I actually had downloaded and still have our old pc from who knows how many years back.
It almost has all the animations save for a few.
There's her downward kick after you've done her tripple jump and then hit jump again while holding down along with a diagonal down.
There's her stance when standing on steps or a platform.
Her coming to a halt after doing a long run(She pushes the front of her skirt down). If this would be possible I'd appreciate it. I'm a little surprised it hadn't been done yet. Otherwise we have all her spells and such, just the other animations are missing.

Sorry for the delay, I already ripped all of the sprites of the NPC Maria (because they're stored raw in one of the stage CHR files), which contains pretty much all graphics of the playable Maria except the dragon-summoning animation. Also some images are very slightly different (like having an extra pixel on the hands or elbow) and there's even a few unused ones. I guess NPC Maria uses an older set of graphics, it's kind of a beta version.
So it's taking longer than expected because I was figuring out the sprite decompression code in order to extract the playable Maria sprites directly from the compressed CHR files.
I'll finish a decompression tool today and will resume the ripping process (and hopefully find more unused stuff).

A full sprite rip of Saturn's Maria. I didn't want to have duplicated images so they're sort of organized by animation but I skip any that would repeat itself.
Unused frames are included and placed either where they seem to fit better or in the order that they're stored in the CHR file.

Alright, and thanks. I would've sorta organized the sheet a little but differently but I can still tell where the animations start and begin at least. And I see that they did indeed intend for her to have item crashes but might've had second thoughts given how powerful she is in general with her magic, item crashes would've been even more ridiculous. It doesn't output images because I didn't do enough research to find where the information about image sizes and palettes are stored so you have to use TiledGGD but it's better than nothing ;D
On top of that, when I entered into TiledGGD to look at the files, they came out monochromatic and stretched out. And I know almost next to nothing about using this program, despite RHDN having a screenshot of the program looking into one of the DS games
The palettes for sprites can be found approximately halfway in the .PRG files.

I decided to go for a somewhat realistic look, using dark colors to get a serious and scary mood, but at the same time I followed all FAMICOM/NES technical limitations.

I just gave 1 tone of basic shading to have an idea for later on when i start fully shading it.

These look fantastic. Are you planning to use them for anything down the line? If not, I'd like to try to put them in the actual game to see how they look.
