unless you completely disassembled the code and did some MAJOR overhauling to the majority of it, most of these things would be impossible.

Well I saw some of them already. During the prologue Heart of Fire from aos plays. Juste has a new stance which speeds up like Sotn Richter's then changes. I found some bugs though.

1 - When juste equips a spellbook the lifebars revert to their old palette.
2 - The giant bat is screwed up. A bunch of jumbled up sprites.
3 - Maxim's blood is white when he dies.
4 - Julius's cursed palette is awful.

Gonna test more later.

Edit: Julius mode is pretty cool. Will simon be able to use the items he collects though? What about the relics? I got once stuck in one place (entrance, the underground part) because Simon can't jump high enough to get out of there. :P
I can't progress either, there's one platform just out of his reach. Stuck in the entrance. :(

Yeah, but currently it's impossible to play as him for more than few minutes. He can't even leave the entrance area. :P

Just altering his jump height enough would help, at least a bit. Since there are still places he won't get without doublejump/superjump sadly.

I found some bugs though.

things i noticed so far:


Good:

Julius mode is awesome
nocturne at the furniture room

Bad:

some characters all screwed up and also objects like furniture.


overall opinion: great making i just wish the rom size could be larger to insert upgraded music.

To fix the glitched up bosses just make a normal save at a save point then reset and load from that save.

It's more because the lifebars have a separate palette for each spellbook. I had the same thing in my own hod recolor hack.

Also speaking of palettes, there are few that perhaps should be fixed. The blue beam for the cross item crash needs better contrast since it uses additive blending. The hurt palette could use a better color too. Red would look way better than green.

Next thing i was wondering, would it be possible to somehow include the new characters in the boss rush?

Also I've been wondering, how were the portraits edited? I tried to edit Juste's portrait to separate his colors and give him a more artwork looks (silver hair, pinkish orange skin etc. instead of an almost monochromatic image), but the portraits weren't visible. Were they somehow uncompressed, and if yes would the same be possible with monsters? I wanted to fix few of the bosses for my version.

Btw. if there was more space in the rom, would it be possible to see characters like Soma, Hugh or Nathan? :P

Edit: Oh yeah, one more thing (yeah I know i ask for a lot. :P). Think it'd be somehow possible to have all of the extra modes start from level 1 instead of 40 and have them level up, as well as make them get the special moves with relics once they collect those?

Thanks a lot, Serio, your ideas are of great help. We got solutions for most of these bugs now, and We'll try to fix them in the next few days(hopefully, in one day ;))
en..it seems some colour in hod is actually controlled by its programs, so it doesn't work well if just change palettes.
Instead of being uncompressed, portrait in hod are actually constituted by dates. Hacking this part is somehow complicated.
In addition, could you please help support us some background sprites from sotn? Next, we are also planning to make a HOD remade version based on background sprites of sotn. We tried to rip some by ourselves but failed in the end..

Well, the two I mentioned are very simple color hacks. I mean, I could do that and I'm a complete rookie at rom hacking. :P

The beam is a simple 16 color palette. The damage flashing is 16 x 16 color palettes, which shift one into the next one.

And well, i have all of the sotn background tiles. However most of them are with no palettes, so dunno if they'll be of any use. THey can be found in my sotn spriterips site folder listing.

This looks awensome! just what I've been waiting for. I've been meaning to ask you; are you chinese or do you just speak it?

EDIT: ok playedit for a bit now and I have to say that the julius mode is plain awensome. I did find a few bugs however with enemy sprites. I don't remember all of them but most of them were around the furniture room. oh and mario and megaman also need a superjump because they can't get to all the areas at the moment.

- one last suggestion: in the Justex mode allouw the menu so you can use potions etc.

I am a Chinese actually, staying in Canada. :D So good to see all you like this hacked version. The good thing is most of these bugs will be fixed soon. And, Justex will be improved.

Gear Bug in clock tower Fixed.

Start the game with level.1

Now you can begin the game without all relics...

Julius is based on Maxim, so the final boss room will be available after clearing all the other bosses.

The poisoned palette suffers from the same error.

There was also a bug where J hit an enemy as soon as he started his whip animation. Then again when the whip extended. And once again when he was hiding the whip.

And on whip topic, I assume the crouching whip was impossible? He uses a dagger there, and the christopher's soul whip attachment spawns the fireballs way too far from the dagger. :P

I told PUNKEMNX about these ideas. He said he would try(Seems he got some solutions already). He'll fix them as fast as he can, and he'll add more new features :).

The crouching whip is possible. It's just PUNKEMNX made it like that ;)

There's a special whip tip called "Christopher's soul" or "Bullet tip" in the english release. It will fire fireballs from your whip if your health is full.

One problem, since Julius is based on Maxim, now, Maxim's techniques can not be used any more..

Perhaps it'd be better to base him on Juste then. With some alterations you could probably make J feel much more like the aos one.

Mostly talking about the whip spin ability, the ability to get a [cool] or [good] message when you catch the orb in a special way, have the whip tip visible on the end of your whip if you equip it and other stuff Maxim never could use.

Indeed, it should work. I was slightly disappointed with Alucard, but who am I to say, I can't do hacking worth crap. D:

On the other hand, the altered version of HoD rocks! I've noticed the bugs listed already and haven't really noticed anything else. But this is drawing me into HoD again! Hopefully things get patched up to perfection down the road. : )

About the hacked version of hod, it is fixed now and more new stuffs were added in it. PUNKEMNX said hacked dates increased 3 times but the rom size did not get bigger.(I did not get the fixed rom yet :P. Well,definitely, it will be better)

The whip spin btw. feels too light. As in, it'd be good if it was possible to speed the falling speed of the pieces up, so that the whip doesn't feel like made of paper, but chain.

So that it'd work more like the sotn one.

I don't think there will be an alucard for this hack. His sprites are too big first of all, someone would have to resize him down to fit the hod sprite height.

Same with all other heroes you'd want to see, their sizes wouldn't work simply. The only heroes I can see working in this hack right now are Nathan, Hugh and Soma.

Yeah, I know he's a good spriter, his maxim and J new sprites were decent.

If the rom extending part fails, I'd guess the "castlevania double pack" could work better for it. t's a 16 mb rom unlike the hod one which is only 8. Perhaps it'd be possible to dummy out the first menu and autoredirect it to harmony of dissonance, then remove all of aria's stuff.

However that would probably take too much time, since everything would have to be ported again, not to mention the code could be different.

GBA Rom extending is very easy , unlike snes or nes or what ,just add the space in the rom end will be fine , you even don't need tohack the rom header.

Ah, I see. That's cool. That would mean if you wanted you could extend it to even 128 mb and replace all music with orchestral tracks if there were any available, and add even up to 255 extra modes. :P

And, think the hacked hod version is fixed. Now, they are testing it a littile bit more.

While playing some more I got to another bug. If J's too long in his dive kick animation he'll eventually change into standing sprite. You need a long vertical shaft to notice that, for example the one behind the Talos boss. On that topic, would it be possible to also give him a dive kick down sprites like in aos, so he wouldn't have to use dive kick forward when he's just going down?

Oh yeah, also I was wondering would it be possible to use Jorge's midi remixes to replace some music with them if he's ok with that. That and use something better for the boss tracks, separate death battle music and a new track for the cave, as the originals are terrible. :P

e...this is quite embarrassing.
Tonyjih and Punkemnx are still working hard on it, fixing bugs, adding new features...
The rom was actually updated on Punkemnx's website :P
Julius's speed was improved. Some bugs fixed...but it's just a test version, so I did not post the updated info here.  :P
When it's finally done, I'll put it here ;)
(I also got problems with my girlfriend...That's why I did come recently...crappy ???)

the only sprite that you don't have is the big head Medusa.
i been trying to make one myself but its not coming out to good.lol
the rest are in dracula x mummy/franky/the big bat/dracula
death from super castlevania 4 would be the best to use imo.
but i'd love to see it if it can happen:)

o..since he is currently not only fixing this version bt also making the hod with sotn's sprites, it's hard to do more projects :P

While playing some more I got to another bug. If J's too long in his dive kick animation he'll eventually change into standing sprite. You need a long vertical shaft to notice that, for example the one behind the Talos boss. On that topic, would it be possible to also give him a dive kick down sprites like in aos, so he wouldn't have to use dive kick forward when he's just going down?

Just remember he mentioned that Midi could not be used directly into GBA roms ???
But, he also said it's possible to change all tracks in hod completely.
He is just the kind of people trying to make a perfect hod ;D

Yeah, I can guess. I meant Jorge's midis, recorded into wav first with best possible soundfont and effects.

Also btw. I was wondering, would it be possible to change that horrible final battle area into something new, and better. Maybe for example a throne room or something. :P

Yeah more less, as long as the hole in the middle is patched up, throne put in, platforms removed and the doors on the sides removed.

I'll see about redesigning it later, if it's even possible to edit the stage tiles that is.

This will be the final version(it took too long ;),but it's pretty cool now).

Finally J is not so overpowered now. Only thing that kind of breaks it is that he starts with very powerful armor and headgear. That can be fixed by removing those, but still, the temptation to just equip them and be invincible for most of the game exists. :P

Well, just try to mention that the rom was changed again since Punkemnx has gotten confused with all these roms in his hard disk and put a wrong one on his website...

Simon needs some voices btw, preferably nes or cv4 ones. It's odd when it plays the enemy scream when he's hit and the game over tune when he's dying, which then fades out and changes into the second game over track. :P

Also if possible he needs old school style death and maybe a bit more stiff controls, since right now he feels too much like everyone else.

And perhaps some cool vampire killer that's not hod's vk remix for the entrance theme. Maybe saturn symphony's vampire killer track, the one that plays for maria.

Btw. Simon's slide = priceless. :P

Well since the hack seems to be fine in accepting full/almost full sprites (according to yy-chr at least) perhaps it wouldn't have to be so tiled and wouldn't need an outline (since the modes are based on maxim who didn't have any outline color changes as far as i remember)?

Yeah, but currently it's impossible to play as him for more than few minutes. He can't even leave the entrance area. :P

Just altering his jump height enough would help, at least a bit. Since there are still places he won't get without doublejump/superjump sadly.

Yeah I was lookin' forward to playin' as him and I can't go anywhere.  :(
