A lot of us waited over 26 years for this feature!!   I played the games since Sonic 1, and always felt it would be fun if I could make my own character.    Sega is finally redeeming themselves.  Sonic series very much needed this diversity and choices and customization.  RPGs aren't the only ones that benefit from it, all genres do.  Star Fox should get these features also.  The gameplay is also looking great.

Sonic Forces is providing the best of all worlds.  This is the most innovative, forward thinking and open minded Sonic game ever!!    This is like the SatAM of Sonic games, except even greater!!

And it looks like female characters are possible (well saw a customization part that looks like feminine eyelashes)

Species include Hedgehog, Wolf, Bear, Dog, Cat, Rabbit, and Bird
Hedgehog can collect (lost) rings after getting hit
Wolf automatically draws in rings when near
Bear can blow away enemies when using homing attack
Dog restart with 5 rings after dying
Rabbit has longer invincibility time after getting hit
Cat keeps 1 ring after getting hit
Bird can double jump

You can customize Upper Headgear, Middle Headgear, Lower Headgear, Gloves, Footwear, Body, Bodysuit, and Skin Color."

I like how it also has unique gameplay related differences for each race!!

Gonna buy physical and digital! heck I'll buy two physical copies and the digital version!!

gotta check more of the customization possibilities, but this is looking to be the Xenoverse of Sonic games, at least from a single player standpoint.

player creation, sex options, appearance options, all that and more should be standard features in all games and everything!!

now if they expand the series into something like DC or gamecube PSO, whether it would have online hub features alongside offline accessibility to all the content and modes, and they can make Sonic series even more mainstream this gen!

and with player creation, people can get more immersed and the experience is more personalized with ideal self created identity and stuff!!   

Honestly, that feature and how its shaping up is already getting me hyped and interested in a Sonic game since ever.
Sonic Forces is gonna be the favorite game in the series

When you've seen as many horrors and horrors of the unspeakable variety outnumbering the "beautiful possibilities" at least fifty to one...yeah, it's kind of hard to not see the trainwreck this will likely turn into as far as more Sanic OC Donut Steels go in infesting the Internet.

Character creation's not really a new thing, though, and it's not as if Sega's pioneering the industry with this. It's blowing up because the fandom has been making (mostly shitty and cringe-inducing) characters for years already, and the process has now been sanctioned and officialized by Sega.

Forces looks pretty decent, and even though I laugh at the OG Character community it'll be fun to make a character. Mania is looking more fun but I haven't played a 3D Sonic since Adventure 2 Battle so it's time for me to play a new one.

well there are different classifications of OC designs

someone classified them in different categories, not all are "Sanic" nonsense.

Recolors:   Showing minimal to no artistic ability or creativity is the recolor.

So really not even a 1/3 of OC designs are Sanic tier horrorific designs.

and Sonic Forces is going to have OC guidelines so they generally won't look like they came from a nightmare.

Yeah Im not knocking any truly talented artists who put effort into their work, but then there are the horrors you've mentioned. Plus the Sonic social media pages seem to keep the meme culture surrounding Sonic alive hilariously

Not gonna lie, I do wanna make my teenage edgelord self's first OC, Which was rather tame compared to most of the DA creations.
What was it? Oh yeah, Basically a Hedgehogified version of the Dark Sonic Chao (the Green and black one) with some alterations.
