Title: Oh, them Nineties...
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on January 19, 2016, 04:23:42 PM
Seeing as my New Coke thread became everything but, I decided to semi-split it as much as I am able.

So here is the thread to post in any time something nineties related comes to mind.

Let's just start with the best parody of nineties ads I've ever seen. (https://youtu.be/eyd51lvu3xw)

I remember seeing this several months ago and actually thinking it was a real ad at first as I didn't notice the run-time.  Boy was I in for a treat.

I love how they parody the old COMPLETELY NONSENSICAL Capri-Sun commercials... to a horrifyingly logical conclusion.

Which is hilarious in and of itself, because I remember being a kid and drinking Capri-Sun wishing it would make me into one of the cool liquid metal guys who were good at sports.

It never happened.

I felt lied to.

I kept drinking the shit anyway because it was tasty.

Capri Sun is still the shit.  But I know exactly where your coming from.  I laugh my ass off every time I see this wonderful nugget.

I get the feeling that we nineties kids are the only people who still drink it though.

Also, who remembers the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers miniseries "Green With Evil"?

I wore my VHS tapes out to the point they stopped working watching it over and over.

This is the only pre-broadcast promo I can find (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH8gfzb-WI0) and the video quality is pretty degraded but enjoy the camp regardless.

When One Direction came along, I was already jaded.

Well..not quite Shiroi. Boy bands have been around before the 90's. New Kids on the Block was a boy band that debuted back in the 80's. Still remember being with a bunch of people while they were blasting this stuff. I was too young to know exactly what it was they were listening to. but yeah there was an explosion of boy bands that erupted in the 90's and I just shook my head at the whole mess.

Most of them with much better music than One Direction, to be sure.

Not exactly setting a high water mark, but still -- it was less derivative then.

I know. But I was still a young-un in the 80s. I can't remember much back then. But as a tween in the 90s, aiyayai....

Amen.

I am reminded out of nowhere that TV Tropes has one of the best damn summaries of The Nineties (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheNineties) I've ever seen.

Their Useful Notes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/UsefulNotes/TheNineties) are also pretty good.

I find it rather interesting that the very early 90's felt like a continuation of the 80's. Although, for me, it didn't wear off till about 94 I feel. In much the same way the very early 2000's felt like a continuation of the 90's. It seems that rather then a fresh start--beginning with the first digit of a new decade--a change is felt almost halfway through. Anyone else notice this?

The Nineties were very much a continuation of the Eighties until Clueless dropped into theaters -- almost every expert and historian agrees that was when the 1990's found their unique voice; and many 90's kids will tell you that the times before and after Clueless felt almost entirely different. Clueless was almost solely responsible for 1990's pop culture as a whole, and despite being a film very much of its era, it's still relevant to today's culture.

Another good movie that documents the early to mid nineties was Reality Bites, although it's nowhere near as lighthearted; a lot of people who graduated High School at the end of the 80's or early 90's will attest to the characters' struggles to make something of themselves in a rapidly changing world.

And in the 90's, change was the order of the day, happened constantly, and took effect rapidly.

I've often said that if I could rewrite my personal history, I'd move my birthday to 1975. I'd grow up and enjoy the awesome kid culture of the 80's (seriously, the 80's were a great time to be a kid and being born in '89, I missed all of it by that. much.), go to school through the 1990's (avoiding a lot of the strife that faced young adults during that era) and enter the working class JUST AFTER the dotcom bubble exploded.

As it is, the world is much harder for me to get into no matter how many times I get my foot in the door. I feel like if I started life earlier, it might be... not easier but more practical to do.

That's really interesting, Bloody Rayne. I'm a historian myself, so I was wondering, which books would you recommend on Clueless/its influence on the 90s/the 90s in general? Sounds like something definitely worth getting into :o

I suppose I should count myself lucky that I was born in 79. I remember the 80's decade despite being very young and lots of memories, though fleeting at times, were enjoyable. Ah good times. And when the 90's rolled around it still felt like the previous decade. But then the feeling wore off around 94 and became something else entirely, and I felt I'd lost a part of myself as well. My bro relates more to the 90's despite being born only 18 months after me. He's strange that way, lol.

I had forgotten that Capri Sun used to turn you into the T-1000.

Along with Gushers turning your head into fruit. Which was horrifying in hindsight, but back then everyone would pretend their heads turned into fruit.

Never forget that the 1990's gave us one of the greatest Peter Jackson films ever. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmQxM32PWRM)

All hail the collaboration between Peter Jackson and Michael J. Fox.

Aaaaahhhh, Clueless.  I remember that.  The 90s also gave us the brilliance that was Buffy the Vampire Slayer (including the super-cheesy original movie that was very Clueless with vampires in it at times), Highlander the tv series (and animated series), Cardcaptor Sakura, The Crow, Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Interview with the Vampire, which even tho this day has influenced my fashion tastes.  I also acquired a love for Alisha's Attic's music (to which my best friend and I still stick on and listen to now, approaching 20 years later).  The end of the 90s also provided us with 10 Things I Hate About You...... oh, and last but not least....  the Nineties gave us The Matrix.

The Sailor Moon series first appeared in the 90's as well. We got it in 94 I believe, but in Japan it was released in 92.

Gundam Wing was my very first introduction to Gundam and all its awesomeness.

Likewise, brudda.

Later I got into everything Gundam had to offer up until the end of Seed Destiny, but it all started with Wing.

I miss the Pojo's Unofficial magazine series that explained the history of various anime franchises back in the late 90's and early 2000's. The Gundam issue I read and reread until it fell to goddamn pieces on me.

OH MY GOD BARNES AND NOBLE HAS IT LISTED ON THEIR WEBSITE. (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/pojos-unofficial-total-gundam-wing-bill-gill/1004385462)

Funny that you mention Sailor Moon.... I've just started watching that for the first time yesterday.....  I'd prefer to try and find the English subbed version of the original series, but I'm having to make do with either the subbed version of the remake Sailor Moon Crystal, or the English dub for now.

Finding the Eng sub version shouldn't be that hard. I had no real trouble finding it online. Here, go to a website called GoGo Anime TV and you should find it.

My nineties anime list (including the year 2000 since that was pretty much 1999 The Remake) was pretty much the following:

+Sailor Moon
+Ronin Warriors
+Pokemon
+Gundam Wing
+Dragon Ball Z (neither Dragon Ball nor GT had been released in America yet)
+Random episodes of literally anything anime I could scrape up on mid to late nineties internet

Remember when Toonami had that "Midnight Run" that promised "GUNDAM WING, UNCUT"? I remember staying up waaay late to see how that was different enough to warrant calling attention to this separate release that was so edgy it had to be banished to late night TV, and then was major bummed to find out it was pretty much the exact same show, just with a little extra blood and cussin'.

And later on my Dad didn't like all this "Japanimation" I was watching so he disabled Cartoon Network on our cable box and locked the settings on the episode RIGHT BEFORE GUNDAM EPYON WAS REVEALED. I ended up missing the rest of Gundam Wing's original American broadcast thanks to that, and I didn't get to see the rest of the series until years later when a friend of mine who had the DVD box set marathoned the damn thing with me. It also caused me to miss huge chunks of everything else on Toonami, which was basically the only TV I watched around that time.

The dawn of the twenty first century was a dark time for my anime habits.

I didn't really get into anime properly, aside for Cardcaptor Sakura and GW (who I mainly watched for Zechs), until my first year of uni.  Then I was introduced to Vampire Hunter D and Hellsing, and the rest is history really.

What about Teknoman, Voltron and Battle of the Planets?

Also I believe Thundercats and Silverhawks have Japanese animators according to the credits.

Those were the shit.

Yeah. It is showing regularly once a week in Japan and Ash still is the same age since it started.
So did Digimon at least the characters there (Adventure, 02, and Tri) age.

I no longer am relying on tv for my anime fix now. The internet is a friend. :)

Some are older than the 90s:
Voltron 80s
Battle of the Planets 70s
Thundercats 80s
Silverhawks 80s

I remember being introduced to Teknoman (Tekkaman Blade) through Tatsunoko vs Capcom.  I then went on a Tekkaman Blade marathon that summer.

Thanks for the clarification Shiroi, the 90's held that nostalgia for me even if it was from the previous generations :)

I remember being introduced to Teknoman (Tekkaman Blade) through Tatsunoko vs Capcom.  I then went on a Tekkaman Blade marathon that summer.

You know what's interesting, when I was a kid I had a Teknoman pencil case (which was more like a blue vhs cover with a padded image of Teknoman back and front), then I saw the show in the 90's. Then I played TVC around 2 decades later and made the connection. I did NOT see that coming!
