Hey everyone! After working for a couple of years, I've finally produced another book: Hardcore Gaming 101 Presents: Castlevania. I originally intended it essentially be The Castlevania Dungeon in book form, but I realized that a lot of the reviews on this site as really old/outdated/bad, so it took a long time to revise everything. It includes full reviews of all Castlevania games, several reviews of clones like 8 Eyes and the two Touhouvania games, Komajou Densetsu, trivia, info on all of the soundtracks, and a large gallery showing recurring bosses and situations. Full info is here:
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/cvbook/cvbook.htm (http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/cvbook/cvbook.htm)
Copies of the books, both physical and Kindle are available on Amazon: http://amzn.to/YGsrak (http://amzn.to/YGsrak)
At some point I'm going to be reintegrating at least the reviews and trivia back into this site, which includes all of the recent games (the Lords of Shadow, Rebirth, etc.) that I never got around to covering back then. So it might help revive The Castlevania Dungeon a little bit!

Kurt-sama!!!!!!! I'm so glad to see you again!!!!!! I'mma buy your book and recommend it to all mah friends :D
-
Thumbs up, soldier!
-
You guys will have to post about it for me. I'm broke as hell right now
-
Did you also mention C-Lab's CV clone Rusty? :)
-
Awesome. I'll have to pick this up in the very near future. Can't even imagine how much work must have went into this thing.
-edit-
Scratch that, just bought it now!
-
Is it possible to buy the Kindle edtion with Paypal? Amazon only gives the option to buy it with a creditcard.
-
This made my day. Just bought the paperback. I'm surprised it came out so soon.
-
Looks really awesome! :)
-
The "Kindle for PC" app says this book isn't compatible with it. Can anything be done about that?
-
Does it present a little fan tributes, etc.?
-
Did you also mention C-Lab's CV clone Rusty? :)
Yup, there are a reviews of a few other Castlevania-type games like Vampire: Master of Darkness and 8 Eyes.

I'll be putting out a PDF shortly which should be better for PC reading.

I don't think so but the PDF file is through Sellfy and they accept Paypal.

I just placed my order on Amazon UK :D It will take a whopping 10 days (estimated) for it to arrive, which seems a bit long for a UK -> Scandinavia shipment, but I dunno how Amazon works. This is my first time shopping there! Anyway; Looking forward to it a lot.

Just bought it from there. Thanks Kurt! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
edit: Just a few pages in and I'm already seeing interesting stuff. I had no idea about the spruced-up mobile phone versions of the first Castlevania.
-
I just placed my order on Amazon.com :D
-
Ordered. I can't wait for it to arrive.
-
Ordered along with a Hammer Horror Collection to bump it to almost exactly $35 for free shipping.
-
Currently $15.49 at Amazon, my kinda price.

Perfect, thanks to this little price drop, I could use my gift card and buy it. :)
-
Congrats and THANKS!!! I've been looking forward to this. It couldn't come at a better time with the way the series has been low-key lately (to say the least). I'm certainly going to pick one up in the near-future, if not sooner. Even with the descriptions, I'm a little confused over what to expect. (i.e. Is it equal-ish time for the main series games, or are some favored heavily over others in page count. And what's the general ratio between screenshots vs. artwork between the text?)
Nevertheless, I've always wanted a Castlevania history-type book like this. I'm especially interested to hear your thoughts on the more recent titles; but I also like the idea that you're going to revisit the titles you've already written about here, since a historical perspective helps on the lost merits of some titles. (I especially wonder how the N64 era will shake out in your final assessment!!!)
My salute for all of the work you've put in on this, and on the Dungeon in the past. It's meant a lot. And by the way, semi-unrelated, have you written about your thoughts on Contra Rebirth anywhere? (Fan of the old Contra HQ, too--and that series, which has had its share of rough times).
-
My copy arrived today. Looks good so far, though I kind of wish this was a hardcover and much larger. I'm getting kind of old and blind these days.

Just got my pdf!

Price drop?? Aw, hell. I had a feeling I should've waited.
Eh, on second thought, it's from a site I like, so no big deal.
-
Just got my copy. It's pretty badass. I hated the cover art and sometimes the text ink gets a weird look. Almost a runny ink red newspapery look but it's not a big deal. I can see the love put into it. Very happy with it. Also pretty kind on the wallet, that's a plus.

If it looks too bad, then you might be able to return it. It's not supposed to look like that, but I've seen people be sent copies due to printing errors.
-
Sweet! I'll have to get one. No choice in the matter.
-

I figure it got a price drop a couple days after release because so many others ordered earlier. You helped people like me out. ;)
It's a nice book. The artwork scans look pretty lo-res compared to the crisp screenshots, but it's a minor gripe. Nice to even see a page which has a timeline with all the game logos, one of the pages I always liked admiring the most on the Dungeon because of how cool each logo looked. Wish the Japanese counterparts had been included also, but oh well.
-
Do you actually own those Dracula II cards? Never even knew about those.
-

I thought huh that's a cool trippy effect with the color gradient in the text. Then I saw the double imaging on page 13 and realized I got a faulty printing. On most right hand pages, the left side is noticeably a bit blurry. 25 and 51 are a couple other pages where the left side is noticeably bad. It's not horrible though. Didn't stop me from looking at and reading the book for hours since I got it yesterday. I Love this book in any condition and it's so packed with great info of which some good amounts I didn't know. Fortunately I already have the full size map on page 13. Should I contact amazon or what?
My only complaint is the image the book ends with on bottom right of the final page. Bleh.
Maybe the cover art leaves a bit to be desired, but I think it was an alright choice. It's better than LamePro's style and appeals to wider audience than the more effeminate stuff even if it's not as good quality as that.
-
I got mine yesterday. I can see it becoming my favorite game book. I'm glad Kurt checked over and edited/updated the articles before printing them. I thought at first that it would just be a printed form of everything at the Dungeon, which I still would have been happy with. But it's good to see it's mostly new material.
Nice job, Kurt. I'm sure it took tons of hours to perfect. I hope it sells well.
-
I got mine yesterday, but da poast office is closed till tmrw. Gotta wait till then to pick it up...
-
I wonder if this book has a solid grasp on sales numbers I've always been interested in that.
-
So I got this last night, and it basically is like a flashback to the past 10-11ish years I spent perusing the Castlevania Dungeon, reading articles and reviews and anything new that was posted, going through everything from the regional differences to the soundtracks to the FAQs and walkthroughs and all the hidden secrets and gems as they were discovered. Just a bunch of nostalgic feelings of first starting out here and going through the past decade+ of the series that I started when I was a wee lass.
Well played, Kurt....you goddamn bastard.
-
Disco Kurt-sama!!!! Look what came in today!!!

Sorry for the blurry picture, but I got your book! :D :D It's really good, and I like how you thanked our Jorge for all the work on the CV Dungeon. I also got a copy of the Mammoth Book of New Horror so amazon.com would give me free shipping XD
-
Arg I want this but I'm so broke it's incredible. I might have to wait for Christmas or something
-
What would be the recommended channels to obtain a better print? I'd hate for such a good book to rack up a bunch of complaints on amazon or however it works. I think I'll get the crisp PDF version too anyway since it's just a few bucks.
Edit: Well it's been weeks now so it's too late now and I'm just sticking with my copy. The print's good enough and it's an awesome book.
-
I'm still waiting for this book to arrive. It's been 11 days since I ordered it :( To think it would take so long for a package to go from UK -> Sweden... I've ordered games from friggin Japan that has arrived MUCH earlier. Well, this was my rant of the day. I want the book NAOW! And then I'm gonna order that Sega Arcade book too, I think. Hopefully it'll arrive before the sun explodes in a couple of million years...

I ordered mine a week ago too, and I'll have to wait more than 10 more days to get mine. International shipping ftw.
-
I ordered and received mine. Took about 9 days. No printing errors that I can see. The book is very good; Castlevania deserves a tome like this.
-
Still no book. Tracking code says it's in Denmark. Dunno why. It is now 16 or 17 days since I ordered. Will not buy anything from Amazon ever again.
(Still looking forward to the book though!)
-
You can complain to amazon and they might send you another book on expedited int'l shipping without additional cost.
It worked for amazon japan for my classmate several years ago. I dunno if it will still work now.
-
It's been over a month now since I ordered and still no book. What a joke. I have contacted amazon to see what the flying f*ck they're doing. I should get some kind of compensation for this utter failure on their part. Maybe a lifetime supply of..well, everything. :D
If I don't get it in time for Halloween I shall be furious.
-
Wow, you sat still for a month without contacting them? That's what i call amazing patience, you should get an award for that.
Tell us when the book arrives.
-
I'm not really patient, just confused and also hates to confront people and companies when they're pissing me off. But I'm slowly getting better at it. :)
So Amazon replied and said that the package has disappeared somewhere. Da fuq. They asked me if I wanted a replacement or a refund. I want dat book! So hopefully I won't have to wait another month, but I'm probably not gonna be reading this book for halloween as planned. :( Maybe it will be a xmas read instead lol. Hopefully xmas 2014....
-
Why not just get the pdf kurt-kun linked earlier? It's instant! Unless you really want a physical copy.
-
I thought about it but I think it's so god damned cozy to sit down with a real book, a cup of tea and flip through pages! :D I'm like an old grandpa like that!
-
Physical books don't require electricity and there are tons of books not available in electronic form.
A toast to my ancient library of over 200 books. A few over 100 years old.
-
I also prefer books.
Book don't strain the eyes as much as those e-books and the lovely smell of a book... sniff... ahhhhhh~
-
Ok, the replacement from Amazon got here in just 2 days, ROFLOL! :) after waiting for over a month for the original order this seems surreal to me. Did they use a teleporter this time?
Anyway, the book was delievered to the complete wrong side of town so I'm gonna have to pick it up tomorrow instead. But yay anyway
-
Watch now as you get a copy with printing defects. :)
I also prefer physical books. Biggest reason is it's a pain in the ass to flip back to or find a previous page when it's digital. A PDF in the case of this CV book doesn't work for me 'cos it's meant to be sort of a coffee table book.

Wow! They must have used the expedited shipping option for it to arrive fast. But LOL on the wrong side of town. It must be the first time they delivered to your town. And as Freak said, I hope you didn't get the defect copy.

Heh. Had a similar thing happen to me just recently. Waited 2 months for one of those Mario propaganda posters, and it was lost in the mail. After Fro Design Co located my shipment, it took less than a week.
-
Received mine 2 week ago but forgot to post it! IN LOVE with it! Greetings from Venezuela!!!
-
Mine just found its place with the LoS artbook in my new library. :)
-
Apperently, this book was requested by Konami to be removed from sale on Amazon. Too bad they would probably never bother to put out an official equivalent.
-
Shit, serious? Is it down already, or just pending decision? I need to get it before it's gone.
-
Yep it's gone from amazon unless the author decides to use an alternate or direct payments to him through paypal....
-
Wow, talk about a dick move. I hope the remaining stock can be sold off (if it wasn't somehow confiscated).
-
Is there any place where we can get a glimpse of this book? I really really want a copy!
-
Wow, how awful. Especially since Kurt took so many pains to avoid copyright infringement. I hope it will still be available through other outlets. It's easily one of my favorite items in my collection. My only wish is that there was a hardcover version, but I'm sure the cost would be significantly higher and it probably wouldn't be in demand enough to warrant the production.
-
No f'ing way! That's ridiculous! Why would Konami do this? There's absolutely nothing in the book which could be taken as copyright infringement, not unless any book written to study any subject is infringing on someone's copyright. This is ridiculous!
-
Konami just created a d*ck move!
>:(
Is there any place where we can get a glimpse of this book? I really really want a copy!
Here's the pdf link @ Sellfy: https://sellfy.com/p/568x/
You can still buy it there.
-
Somewhere to buy the physical thing?
-
Man, that's not just a **** move. It's a dumb move. The book is a great promotion of the series.
-
Does Kurt confirm the book has been indeed removed because of Konami's "threats"? Or is this just a rumour?
-
Unfortunately sales of this book have been suspended at the request of Konami. Please check back soon!

Thanks I ordered 1 immediately.
-
Grab yourself a copy before it's down again or out of stock. :)
-
Why was it taken down? Intellectual property infringment? Did Kurt pay royalties to Konami?
-
Ordered! Now the wait begins...
-
I am also curious to know what is the reason(s) Konami managed to take it down, albeit for a short time only.
-
If it works anything like Youtube, they take it down first and then investigate. Guilty until proven innocent.
-
It's weird that it was taken down then put back up, never seen that before...
I bought one immediately when it was back up and it shipped a few days ago.
-
Excellent news. I, too, would be interested to hear the workings on this, though I doubt that will happen. I notice that the cover has a new "Unofficial and Unauthorized" stamp on it now, which was probably at Konami's request. Nevertheless, it's a great book. Along with the underrated and downright fun SNES Dracula X getting released for Wii U, it's one of the best things to happen for Castlevania in years. I ordered a copy back when it came out, but never got to get its Kindle version until now. By the way, the two are connected via Amazon's Matchbook Program, so you can get the ebook at a discount--even free at the moment, it seems--if you buy the physical copy.
Now, if Konami's listening, I'm waiting to get a Castlevania: Bloodlines release on Wii U! (And a Contra: Hard Corps release, as well.)
-

You'll have to take that up with Sega and/or Nintendo, since they decided not to do Sega Genesis games for the Wii U VC.
-
Got my official copy yesterday. No "Unofficial and Unauthorized" stamped anywhere...
-
Mine arrived today. The post man shoved it in the box pretty hard though, damaged the bind a little. Kinda pissed about that.
Looks pretty good though flipping through it quick. I'll have to read more later.
-
I think I might just have to do a "ROM Injection" if I want to have Bloodlines as a Virtual Console game.
...then again, I can just play it on the Genesis Plus emu on Wii Homebrew.
-

Sounds like it's just the Amazon cover picture which has been updated, not the actual product. "Unofficial and Unathorized" at the bottom and "Copyrighted Material" at the top. Product is most likely the same stock as before it was taken down, and not reprinted.
