Title: MoFo Mike is playing Castlevania: Blood Moon (NES)
Post by: Mooning Freddy on June 04, 2012, 02:44:45 AM
I wonder if anyone here played this hack of the original NES Castlevania. It looks kinda cool from the video.

Castlevania Blood Moon (NES) Let's Play with Mike (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UuPTaY2FSc#ws)

saw that. Looks really cheap. nothing in the level design really changes, and it takes sprites from other games.

Hell, the Mummy sprites are just recolored Trevor sprites.

Its just a graphical hack.

I'd play it just because probably. The dude in the vid was kinda annoying...cool NES cover though...

I thought about posting this yesterday, lol. While it's nice that whomever the creator was completely redid all the levels in that hack giving it different sprites and such, I agree with Mike in the video. They should have made the levels more different than they were. It was too close to the original. When I'm playing a hack of anything I like it to have variety and be quite different than the original.

Looks pretty nice. But yeah, it's not that original.

The walk+whip possibility is cool.

Looks decent but they really should have mixed it up more, at least rearrange the order of the bosses if you can't make new ones. And the areas didn't really seem to have a theme to them other than "Castlevania 2 texture with lots of difficult-to-jump gaps."

That's Redrum's game.
Redrum made the hack many many moons ago (http://www.inverteddungeon.com/redrum/), heh, heh... (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AWorldwidePunomenon)

There was an other cv game I cannot remember the game but I think there was a chess like stage in it.

Haha, yeah, I was hoping to see more of the actual game than see this guy just die a lot and get pissed off. It was grating after a few minutes.

That's "Castlevania: Chorus of Mysteries".  That was a great one.

Well this looks awfully spotty. The impression I'm getting here is that it's CV1 with tacky backgrounds, arbitrary sprite changes, and inferior level design. No thank you.

What is considered the best CV hack, Jorge?

It's not cancelled, it's just on hiatus since I cannot find a programmer to take up the reins. :(
It's on 'development hell', heh heh.

The best 'hack'?  Chorus of Mysteries is pretty good.  It's got innovative bosses and interesting backgrounds.
It's the one I like the most in terms of CV NES titles.  I've not seen complete CV3 hacks or well-mapped CV2 hacks.

Again we're talking ROM Hacks.

Unfortunately that awesome looking Simon's Quest hack seems to be on hiatus. But the music coder for that game, Optomon, is making a CV2 hack of his own that changes graphics, mechanics, and a ton of other stuff to make it into a completely new game called Pyron. The end result isn't really a Castlevania game but it's still damn impressive.
