May I have volunteers for judging this month's contest?

Considering that this is gonna be freestyle, do we really need a 2x sprite for the higher-res ones (e.g. Guilty Gear X's style)?

I wouldn't think so.

The 2x ones are for those in the Castlevania portable games style. I'll make clarifications on the rules post.

mmm I have 3 questions:

1) I can use a Character make by another person? In Devian I make a female Belmont from the idea from a person from devian and I want to know if this is okey or not? obviously I send a note to that person if its okey to use his work in this contest and for now she told me she is going to think about.

2)I say it I will lose the surprise factor but I need to know this, Can I use a Female Belmont that exist but only appear and have like 3 sprites and never battle? the persons that see my Deviant perhaps know of the character I want to use and I know its will be not create the character but its something I want to know if its okey, im going to put in spoiler the character I want to use:

(click to show/hide)

3) in this contest is not a limit of entries?

Thanks to god Im thinking in another Ideas in case this dont get accepted.

@Belmontoya: Thanks!

@Jop:
1) Yes, as long as that person grants your request.
2) Well, since this is a free for all, and her sprite sheet is incomplete, yeah you may use her. But I think you have to change a bit of her sprite to make her "your" version.
3) If you want to submit a lot of entries, fine, go for it. Each one would be judged individually, as per usual.

---
I need 2 more judges!!!

You might want to make one of the judges a poll. I am thinking we are going to have alot of entries this month for this contest...
Title: Re: February 2015 Castlevania Dungeon Sprite Contest
Post by: theANdROId on February 02, 2015, 06:26:03 PM
I might be willing to judge...I'm still thinking though.  On one hand, I don't want to "hog" the position.  Also, I wouldn't mind participating in another contest.  On the other hand however, I've been busy with work and kid, and for this contest I don't have the slightest idea what to do/where to go with it -- am wondering if I should maybe research some more, do some simpler stuff (perhaps just post it in the sprite forum for feedback?).  Maybe I can consider which way I want to play it for another day or few?

I don't mean "hold a place for me" but rather, "If I can wait and get back to you shortly, and if (at that point) a place is still available..."
Title: Re: February 2015 Castlevania Dungeon Sprite Contest
Post by: Shiroi Koumori on February 03, 2015, 01:02:34 AM
@darkmanx: The poll will either be the 3rd or 4th judge depending on the number of people who would volunteer.
@Android: Ok, I'll wait.

BTW, people can still volunteer for judging even if the contest is nearing completion, as long as they haven't submitted an entry and there are still judging slots left.

?

That's a coincidence, dude. I'm not familiarized with KOF (well I do know the game, but I never saw this character, until now since I went on to discover where this character is from). In fact I think I'm gonna pull out this sprite, I wanted her looks and colors to remind the viewer of Saint Germain, but I see I was not very happy on my choice.. I could only do so much with the clothing I had in mind. Oh well.

'Cause you know, frock coats with white pants and boots are a super-specific look that only a few people in history had.

Don't withdraw mate, the St. Germain homage came across well enough to me at least.

Donvermicelli, great job!

You took the idea of a female Belmont character and put a very interesting twist on it with the succubus.
The artwork is good, another pose (a standard stance) would be nice.

You still have plenty of time to update this sprite entry.

I hope to see more from you!

Nah, G's are alright if they're bound well enough.  Good enough sports bra and you're good to go.
Source: One of my Ex's was 34G.  You have to change the posture on your sprite, btw.  They're hanging a pixel or two too low, so they seem... unsupported.

Would they be, though? It's not like sports bras were around in 1797.

Is she wearing a bodice of some sort underneath the blue frock?

A bodice refers to the part of a dress that covers the torso, or an undergarment similar to a corset. Since she obviously isn't running around in a hoopskirt, it would seem appropriate for the period that she wear an undergarment for the upper body. More so if she's that well-endowed.

Sorry, I typo'd the other one. The *blue frock refers to her coat. That style of coat (which judging from the sprite is just a female-proportionate version of Richter's) is called a frock coat, which were multipurpose coats often used for such things as hunting.

Vampire hunting, maybe?

Gamer lived a good life playing video games, but when Dracula ressurrected, and without a suitable weapon, Gamer had to take her XBOX controller and use it as a weapon to fight the hordes of darkness.

I'm really liking Kokushibyō's and ThePlotTwists entries (especially Ariane Beaumont)! Personally, to me it seems silly to pull the entry because of a slight resemblance of a KoF character who isn't dressed incredibly original anyways. Keep it as a submission, and great work guys.

Great job to everyone!  So many entries, and all done so well...this was difficult!  (Somehow, it was still fun to do, so thanks for the privilege of letting me judge this one!)  Again, ;-) I say we should use our entries from each of these contests to just make our own game...Castlevania: Dungeon Forum of...something.

Anyway, on to my verdicts if you would like to know!  I thought about placing each winner under their own spoiler tag, and the honorable mentions under another...but on account of the fact that such an act may just be annoying, I'll just use one tag for them all.  [Drumroll] [/Drumroll] ;-)
(click to show/hide)

Once again, and absolutely stellar job done by all!  I don't know how anyone else really feels, but I say all of these forum contests are pretty awesome!

That "skirt" is actually more akin to a loin cloth.

If you look at it again, I drew it as if it's blowing in the wind.

The white trim in it is the bottom of it. So the wind had blown it a bit to the side and she has a little bit of thigh exposed on the side.

1st place:

Kaonstantine: Alunia Belmont

Love this. Great design, great animation. What kaonstantine does is bring a fresh style to the table. I wish we saw more sprite artists work with their own voice, rather than emulate style. Kao takes risks and breathes new life. Thank you for the great entry! I only wish you would have put more time into a backstory.

2nd place:

Donvermicelli's Seranna

Great work on this. She has an original design. The pose is good but a little awkward for the only sprite. I would have liked to see a standing pose in addition to get a better feel for the costume.

3rd place:

Theplottwist: Ariane Belmont

Another great piece by Theplottwist. You are a master of the SOTN style and an amazing artist. This entry had some controversy, but it was ungrounded in my opinion. Even davinci used a model for the Mona Lisa. There is nothing wrong with using references. I gave you 3rd place because I would like to see you show us another style of your sprite work. By now we all know that you are a skilled artist. I want to see what else you can do!

Great work everyone! Thanks for playing!

So, to save anyone the math:
First: Tie between Ariane (plot) and Roxanne (ZSG)
Second: Tie between Seanna (Don) and Alunia (Kon)
Third: Zoe (dark)

Is that okay?  Are there rules for ties?  I dunno!

That "skirt" is actually more akin to a loin cloth.

If you look at it again, I drew it as if it's blowing in the wind.

The white trim in it is the bottom of it. So the wind had blown it a bit to the side and she has a little bit of thigh exposed on the side.

My bad...it isn't at all what I was imagining.  I can now better see what you were going for now.  Admittedly, it does still seem a bit odd, but much less so than when I was picturing a skirt.  Still a good piece overall though!

Oh yeah you are right theANdROId about the Ice, its because it is a space ship, its Vic Viper,I just wanted to do something that some Castlevania do, you know find some items that looks like something from other game, so thats why the Ice make that XD.

Oh my gosh I can't believe that didn't occur to me!  Nice cameo!  If you use that in a game one day, maybe it could be a rare happening that does extra damage or something (like the "shrunken head" vegetable Peach pulls in the Smash Bros games)?!!

As for the ties, I've already asked Jorge to help with that.

For ties, both people get the award representing that place.
However, the award for the place under it becomes lost, that place now qualifies for the next award.
Since we only offer three awards, that meant that if there are two ties, there is no third place award.

In this case, theplottwist and ZSG both get Gold.
Donvermicelli and Kaonstantine get Bronze, since the first place had two awards.
No awards are given for darkman's entry, not because it wasn't good, but because of the award structure mentioned above.  I did it this way for previous ties in the past two months.

Didn't for the previous music contest ( I believe it was) there was a tie and the 2 entries got the same 1st place award while the 3rd person was actually promoted to 2nd Place...

Correct me if I am wrong...

I had a blast making the character, sadly I was short on time so sadly I couldn't really work out multiple poses (or beef up her story).
Here is to hoping the rest had as much fun as I did.

I'm pretty sure that's not what happened.

Proof of what Jorge said from the December 2014 Castlevania Dungeon MUSIC Contest:

I'll use standard rules for ties without tie-breaker:

-All tied winners get the award they tied for.
-The award for the tier under that disappears.
-The runners-up get the tier under the disappeared tier award.

So for this, we shall have two Gold Awards, no Silver Award, and the 2nd place gets the Bronze.

Look at BMC_War Machine's profile and his Dec award is a bronze even if he got 2nd place in the rankings.

Due to some controversy regarding the use of sprites from other members from our contest be sure to mention from now on if you want your final entry to be open-sourced or not.

Meaning other members can or cannot use your sprites for their projects! (Just so we are clear.)

I will mention that also in the Bestiary.

Yeah this is over.
I just forgot to post the winners' names on the first post.
