Title: So, Konami dumped a whole bunch of Castlevania OSTs to Spotify
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on May 04, 2019, 12:03:11 AM
While nobody was looking, no less!

Take a gander here (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5Nurpyl4Q3KHXmqf7QMcfB?si=I5pIl2ywTomikIu2JBIVxA).

The collection is by no means comprehensive, but it is oddly eclectic.

In order, we have:

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Castlevania: 64(!)
Castlevania: Chronicles (ALL OF IT)
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon/Castlevania:Harmony of Dissonance dual-release
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (as a Russell Watson fan I am disappointed that his end-credits song didn't make the cut, but that's international licensing for you)
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (including the remastered disk!)
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow/ Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow dual-release
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Castlevania: Judgment
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

So it's not everything, but it is a huge smörgåsbord of the sound of Castlevania, and most of it is from the IGA era.

And we have a bunch of Castlevania at its best and most epic.

Why Konami would be so cruel as to hide it behind the artist name of "悪魔城ドラキュラ サウンドチーム" in the US version of Spotify, ensuring that nobody would find it, is beyond me, but the timing strikes me as interesting given a certain compilation of games they are set to release...

The set's still not as glorious as the Dungeon's own media section back in the day, but hey, we take what we can get.

Anyway, have luck good fun.

This is amazing!!! Thanks for finding it. And I agree with your opinion on the release timing.

"悪魔城ドラキュラ サウンドチーム"
Akumajou Dracula Sound Team

Does this mean the 2nd installment of the compilation includes all the titles here that were not part of the first compilation. Oooohohhhhh~

God I would go apeshit over a compilation made of these games. It's basically all of my favorites in one.

And also it's got Judgment and Harmony of Despair, I guess. Two extra games.

Interesting that they credit it as the "Akumajou Dracula Sound Team" instead of the "Konami Sound Team" or the older moniker of the "Konami Kukeiha Club". Like, they are going to a surprising length to point out that THIS. IS. AKUMAJOU DRACULA!!

I think, and you guys know how much of a pessimist I am about Konami, we may have underestimated Konami's level of drive and commitment here.

Is it conceivably possible that they saw the (relatively) huge success of the Netflix show, the buzz that happened following Simon & Richter's announcement for Smash, and then saw what Capcom has been pulling off with RE2 Remake and Devil May Cry 5 (and now credible rumors of an RE3 Remake), and went "I want some of that...!" and it got them to press a little harder than usual?

We... we might actually be able to nudge this into a full-on renaissance if we spend our money right.

I don’t think this is a coincidence at all. This could very well be Konami “testing the waters” so to speak. They are gauging public interest, to see if releasing a brand new Castlevania game after all these years will be economically profitable

i'm actually really happy about this

my CV spotify fix up until now was a whole bunch of cover albums, only one or two of which i actually liked/think are up to par

plus Circle is in there, which i spare no expense in expressing as one of my favorite soundtracks in the series

It's killed me that Fate To Despair and Proof of Blood never turned up again with higher quality synths or even an actual orchestra.

also the metal proof of blood cover is pretty dope and i'm reaaaaasonably sure there're at least a few FTD covers out there that could fit the bill

I audibly gasped when I saw this news. The albums they added have some of my favorite music of all time, all I really miss is the Bloodlines OST. Awesome move by Konami.

Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. The Mega Man franchise was also going through some rough times a few years back (MML3 cancellation, Mega Man excluded from MvC3, troll Mega Man added to SFxT instead, bad mobile games like MM Xover, etc) until Mega Man's inclusion to Smash Wii U. Slowly, Capcom regained their trust in the brand which culminated in the collections and Mega Man 11 becoming a thing.

Right now we're in the phase where Konami is slowly regaining their trust in the Castlevania brand. The collections will be the first "test", so to speak. If they sell well, we might see a new game. A full-on renaissance is a stretch at this point but the signs have been good so far.

That's pretty awesome of them.
I wonder why they did not say anything about it?
I really wish they'd let me make a new CV game for them.
Maybe indie like.. 16bit..
I've got Pixel Game Maker MV, and once i figure it out, i'm planning to work on a tribute game, but it would be nice if I could make an official CV game.

Well shit.....this is ridiculously rad.

Now I know what I'll be interspersing with all my metal and German synth wankery on Spotify.

On the other hand, the AoS soundtrack is still using the old fuzzy-ass recording, bleh.

Anyway, I'm curious as to why some of them are rebranded as Original Soundtrack Selection instead. I'm guessing it's because some tracks had to be cut due to rights and all?

EDIT: We're missing Invitation of a Crazed Moon across all soundtracks, of all things. Is there a problem with getting the rights from Yuzo Koshiro?

1) It's all recycled from previous releases with basically nothing in the way of new content, so, yeah.

2) That would be my guess as well

3) Given my (admittedly less than legally comprehensive) knowledge of how copyright works, he probably doesn't have any rights that can conflict with Konami's on this -- if he'd composed it previously and it had shown up as a licensed third-party track, I could see it. But, they specifically hired him to help compose the PoR soundtrack, and as far as we know, this song came as a result of that. They paid him for a product, and he delivered it -- seems to me like that would mean they unequivocally own it lock, stock, and barrel. I'd venture an intern just didn't click that check mark when uploading or something.
