Title: Favorite depiction of Dracula?
Post by: beingthehero on April 07, 2014, 12:13:56 PM

Chronicles Dracula, in my humble opinion, still remains the best depiction of him. It's like Christopher Lee's gentlemanly-appearance was throughly Kojima-fied and it's fantastic. Defintely captures both his suaveness along with his monstrous nature. A nice contrast with Simon's appearance which is both savage and elegant.

I also dug his appearance in PoR. A nice throwback to the latter-day years.

Even though the old school entries are my favorites, I gotta admit I love the character design for the Dracula X Chronicles version of Drac the most.

His SotN appearance and his Curse of Darkness look.  I think that his face in CoD is a slightly more realistic version of his SotN look, and I prefer it ever so slightly.  However, I prefer his SotN costume.  Refined, elegant nobleman, but very sinister and menacing at the same time.
I must say however that I do also love the design of Gabula, even if he s a million miles away from his classic counterpart's appearances. :)  He had really good looks, his red coat was awesome.  He came across as complete badass not to be messed with.  The refined appearance of his classic counterpart would not have fitted with him, considering his background.

Oh yeah, gotta love the Vampire Killer Drac. Especially the manual artwork that's just a picture of Lugosi with hand drawn fangs and Alice Cooper makeup added:

For some reason, this Dracula's sprite always reminded me of Eustace. Must be the chin.

CV IV's sprite is what does it for me. I've always liked Dracula being monstrously tall, and he looks pretty damn suave in it. He may not have a monster form, but his skeletal face is pretty menacing.

The Arranged mode in Chronicles is also damn nice. Again, super tall—even taller this time—and the addition of a giant-clawed monster form.

Another vote for Chronicles. That staff evokes Dracula's sorcerous side, which I don't think any other depiction of his really does.

Second goes to SOTN's. It's become iconic to me.

I gotta say I like the Chronicles (Arranged mode) sprite more than Kojima's art. Her illustrations still make him look a bit too debonaire, while in the sprite he looks more monstrous but not without elegance. It kind of fits my idea of Dracula having charm to him, but he's still a devil and frightening in appearance. Somewhere between Max Schreck and Bela Lugosi.

^If only that was the ReBoot version of Mathias.  :( Ok anyway, I honestly love all Dracula's character design in all Castlevania series and I actually just made one for my own version of Lord Dracula when he truly revives by sacrificing the soul of Death in the third Sorrow series with his full power as the true final boss and face Soma Cruz for the final battle!

I know I already posted, but this is probably my favorite artwork for my favorite representation of Dracula and I wanted to post it. It's creepy, showing a brooding, terrifying, and morbid vampire lord. It looks like he's been there for a long time, and has just awoken, waiting for the right moment to strike you down.

I like X Chronicles's look. It seems relatively close to his literary description. Ordinarily, I don't care for Ayami Kojima's artwork as the characters always seem to look like bishounen dressed as hipster pirates. I also liked Dracula in the first game's artwork.

As far as sprites go, I like CV1 and the X games. They have a resemblance to Christopher Lee (my favorite Dractor).

According to MatPat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDGCnw3qu98#), the 64 incarnation is most similar to the novel.

As far as the games go, I kinda like the general idea of the look as seen in games like SotN, the "old" drac in N64, the dracula wraith in HoD, or Drac in OoE.  Portrayals of a "younger" Dracula just look wrong somehow...maybe even worse since Twilight.  OoE may be my favorite depiction...not too "old", not too "young"...somehow looking horridly evil and yet also apathetic (I kinda liked that about SotN Dracula).

I'd concur with that assessment. It is one of, if not the closest to the literary Dracula.

I vote for the PoR´s version.

The first time that I arrived at the Throne Room, I expected a normal fight against Dracula, but fighting him and Death as a team, was a really nice surprise for me. I like his second form, too. But, when Death gives his soul to Dracula, I would prefer a hooded Dracula with a scyte, wings, and a mask to cover his skeletical face 8)... Well, that would be great for me :D

Yeah, nobody can take credit for Drac with butt-shaped hair except Coppola.

I believe they added the wig to try and make Oldman look taller, since he was apparently much shorter than other characters he was supposed to be intimidating. I take it that the crease was supposed to make the wig evocative of bat ears, like the horns on Vlad's helmet from the intro flashback. According to some of the DVD extras for the film they had the production motto that "The costumes are the sets." with the goal to emphasize elaborate costumes with minimalistic sets. I don't think they quite achieved what they were going for to that end but it explains why that costume was perhaps a bit over-done.

I don't have a favorite Dracula, there's so many great ones! It's not fair to ask me to choose, it's not fair I tells ya!
I am rather fond of Count Orlok though.

For a long time I've regarded Nosferatu as being inspired by the novel, but not based on it per se. It shares certain elements from Stoker, undoubtedly, but I think it has enough ideas of its own that I believe it merits itself as an original body of work. I use the term original rather loosely, since nothing is really original.

Plus, Orlock is his own character in Symphony of the Night.  ;D ;D

And he's got a background cameo in X68000/Chronicles! Yeah I agree I'm glad they made him a different character in Castlevania lore. Castlevania sticks with the more seductive Lord Ruthven and Bela Lugosi/Christopher Lee inspired versions of the Count mostly. So him suddenly being this kind of plague monster ala Nosferatu wouldn't make much sense as a first-form and would be too human-like for a second form.

I think Hellsing has a pretty great take on the character that's fairly original, seductive and deceptively villainous. While focusing on the sense of ennui that would come with immortality and godlike power. Because that's an interesting aspect of the character that a lot of versions just miss. He's bored. He's seen and done it all over the centuries. That, along with (presumably) thinner and harder hunting around his home, is why he leaves for England in the novel.

Hellsing's great. Alucard is an evil good guy and it somehow makes sense within the show/manga. He's the King Vampire, yet he seems to take pleasure in destroying demons. He's a spawn of Satan, yet he fights and shows devout loyalty to a woman leading essentially a Christian organization.

He's a man of many contradictions. Love the show.

Does Dracula's CVII sprite intentionally look like a skeleton? Or is it just a case of graphical limitations giving it that appearance?

I ask because none of the game's artwork gives the impression of a skeletal Count. It could be meant as a surprise, I guess, but it seems odd.

I thought he was meant to look undead, because his body was re-assembled and it's all dishevelled. Part of it has to be graphical limitation, if they were going for the same thing kind of Dracula as Harmony of Dissonance.
I never understood why he was so big though and the attacks he has are more similar to Death's.

Having a large boss at the end of a game was mainly for intimidation factor. That and you can show lots more detail on the boss themselves. On a side-note Dracula's always been big. His attacks do resemble Death's, however they are not sickles but spinning balls of fire.

Me neither, well if you do nothing eventually he shoots projectiles, but even without the sacred flame or the dagger he's quite easy to kill. Unless you just stand there.

Haha, they're not really bosses, they're  more like enemies with high HP. Bosses you can't just walk past right.
