Title: Do you prefer Classic style or Metroidvania style?
Post by: TheRetroArtist on November 30, 2013, 01:13:39 PM
Hey so I'm new to the forum so I apologize if this has been done before.

Anyways as the title suggest, what is your preferred style in Castlevania: Classic or Metroidvania?

I prefer the Classic style personally, but that's just me. Anyway, feel free to leave your opinion.

You're forgetting ColoxOfWarVania. That's important too, you know.
And make a poll! It's always interesting to gauge the current Dungeon demographic from their Castlevania tastes.

But for me? I was born and raised with Metroidvania, and I shall always live by it. You Classicvania worshipers are brutish and unrefined, incapable of understanding the merits of a clearly superior design and losing yourself in your own derisive single-mindedness... All right, just kidding.  ;D

I like both. I'll play a Metroidvania every now and then, but what we really need right now is to go back to CV's roots with classic retrovania-style gameplay.

Yeah this was asked before a while back. The poll resulted in a little over half the people saying they liked them both equally http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,5149.0.html (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,5149.0.html) though out of those willing to commit to one or the other, ClassicVania stomped Metroidvania with a 20 to 5 score. Personally I love them both, though I find the good ClassicVanias (which is nearly all of them) to be a bit more rewarding.

Both but if I had to choose I'd go with Classicvania.

Metroidvania.  I would have no problem with every Castlevania game being that way.

I like both.  I think I'd go with Metroidvania though if I absolutely had to pick one over the other...but I do agree with Ratty that the Classicvania games are much more rewarding.  It feels like a bigger deal to survive all the way through one of those...but still, I'd say both or Metroidvania.

I don't have a preference. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of the classics, but I love the exploration and replay value of a Metroidvania. However, I'd enjoy the classics much more if they take what Rondo established and expand upon it. In fact, they'd be absolutely brilliant like that. I'm talking multiple playable characters (more than 2 preferably), tons of stages and alternate routes, tons of bosses (maybe even give each stage its own set), tons of secrets to find, multiple endings, etc. Now that would be a Castlevania game. :D

My only real beef with Rondo was the stages were somewhat sort. They could've lasted longer with an extra segment or two put in there.

Classic grab a whip and go action. What is it with these gauntlets and summons. All I want is a boomerang

^^LOVE this post!  ;D

Agreed. Classicvanias is where it's at for me. they're less bloated, better designed, and more of a challenge IMO. Symphony is the only Metroidvania I can honestly say I love.

lol thanks and I should edit my post to exclude symphony. I'm a huge food collecting junkie in that one

I honestly really like both styles. They have their own merits. Classicvania is much more challenging in general and has a much tighter focus in its game design. Metroidvania is much looser, but it has the exploration element and snappier combat. If I had to choose one style to play for the rest of time, though, I'd probably pick Metroidvania just because it has a lot more replayability with all of the alternate characters and extra modes. Castlevania 3 is one of my favorite Castlevania games, though.

I like both, there are certain Classics I would put over SOME metroidvania's such as Super Castlevania 4 and Castlevania rondo of Blood, but over all I prefer metroidvanias more since there is generally far more to do such as exploring and finding secrets and weapons.

I like both but I prefer the Metroidvania style!

Many years ago I saw in a TV show Castlevania (I didn't know the name that time) Symphony of the Night and Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance. From that moment I realised that those games are made for me :)

I mean huge Castle to explore, enemies from different mythologies, backtracking, progression, cool story - it is just too good.

I played all "RPG" Castlevania games on emulators (I am sorry about that) but 2 years ago I bought Nintendo DS lite and now I have CotM,HoD,AoS,DoS,PoR,OoE and I am happy to say that it is awesome to play them everywhere I want :)

Nothing wrong with emulating. If you don't have access to the game, handheld device or both, then emulation is the way to go.

Hell, I actually own most of the handheld games but still prefer playing them on an emulator. Being able to play them on a monitor or a TV and being able to use any controller I please are two great things.

I just hate how DS emulation is still a bit finnicky, so it can be weird emulating the later CV games.

Emulation is good IF you do not own the console but I wanted to see what it is to own a DS and now I have emulators on that too :) I play SNES games and NEO-GEO games on it as well.

On my laptop I play PS1 games and PS2 games. For the first time I played Castlevania Curse of Darkness and Lament of Innocence and I must say that they are really good.

I am also glad to play Lords of Shadow for the PC as well. I do not know why people do not like it that much but I bought a controller for 13$ and I think the game is amazing - all that LORE and reading of the journals, bestiary and chapter openings is what I was looking for.

Well I actually do not think that there is a bad Castlevania. I guess I am just a big fanboy :D

Hmm tough question. I guess I like both of them for different reasons. By the way you forgot the Godofwania style.

I like both but I prefer the classic style. I mean if you could unlock secret endings, weapons, characters, and all of that stuff, it would be nice but every time you step into METROID, the first thing your thinking, I am going go after the most power-fullest weapon, and unlock that secret thingy, to get a 400%.

I love the point you make here. This is almost exactly the way i feel about it.

They replaced much of the difficulty (the actual game and what made it a challenge) with random 'find me' garbage that nobody should care about. If i can beat a game with 85% of a game completed, they didn't design the game very well.

Metroidvania's are fun at first, but then it becomes tedious to explore around the castle to get a key to open a door or some special ability. Plus, I hate all the inventory that you can get but then has absolutely no use, like the weapons. There could be a ton, but only a few are really useful. I just prefer it when the game play is straightforward and simple.

MetroidVanias are great, but I grew up with the original series on the NES, so it's definitely the classics for me. For an old school gamer like me, the classic series has much more replay value than the MetroidVanias, simply because of the scoreboard. Once you've found and done everything in the MetroidVania games (and Simon's Quest), the replay value really takes a beating. But with the classic games, there's always the thrill of trying to beat your own high score.

Original castlevania, its just simply more challenging and feels like a full blooded sidescroller... metroidvania just feels like an exploration RPG game with its insane amounts of weapons, spells and trivial stats rather than a sidescrolling action game.

Egoraptor puts it best "its like comparing a snack food to high class desert you can mindlessly chomp away at the snacks because of its addictive nature but high class desert requires slowing down to enjoy the game and in the end you're going to think more highly of the desert because it gave you a feeling of TRUE satisfaction"

Symphony of the night looks&sounds AMAZING! its one of the best looking 2d games ever made but it doesn't go beyond that... its gameplay is simply just underwhelming.

Classic all the way. A lot of the challenge is lost when the game is non-linear.
