Symphony of the Night: small screen or big screen?

Symphony of the Night has had a time of it. After garnering a (honestly well deserved) reputation as one of the very best that Castlevania has to offer, the floodgates opened.

Symphony of the Night was everywhere it seemed. PS3, PSP/Vita, Xbox 360, DXC (moar PSP), that... Encore of the Night.... phone... thing, and of course unofficial moves to other systems like PC, Android, and Windows Phone via emulators (SHAME ON YOU PIRATE PEOPLE AND YOUR LAW-FLAUNTING WAYS I AM SO PROUD OF YOU FIGHT THE MAN/MEN/DARK LORDS AT KONAMI).

Rolling hacked DSes, Android Emulation, and Encore of the Night (for some reason) to the pile of "Small Screen", what do you usually play Symphony of the Night on?

Big screen (consoles and/or PC emulation) or small screen?
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Big screen for me. My first time playing SOTN was with DXC, and I thought it was good but severely overrated and dated, especially compared to later entries like Aria. I tried one more time on PS3, and O. Me. Jee I was just bown away! It was then that I realised SOTN was my favorite Metroidvania: The control was perfect on the dualshock, the graphics were still great blown up, and the way the game was designed in terms of pacing and playabilty-it was meant for consoles (or PC).

I still prefer SSOTN for reasons I've stated before, and I plan on finding a decent Saturn emulator when I have time and playing it on the PC (after I get a Saturn controller to USB converter of course ;)). Disappointed that its so expensive cus I feel more people should be able to play it and enjoy the differences. Iga really should've fought for some sort of release that included the Saturn stages, exclusive music tracks, items, beginning character select and Maria from the Saturn but with the smooth speed, better graphics and less load times of the PS version (I really hated the PSP SOTN Maria).

It was meant for a big screen, the only people that I can see preferring a small screen are people that only play on phones  and doesn't use or have a PC anymore (I know some people that do that). Sure, I like to play in a small screen too depending of the situation, but I prefer a big screen.

Try Yabause and SSF. You will know which one works better for you then.

Nothing beats the big screen for SotN.
It makes me appreciate the pixel art more.

Certain games are better suited to hh but SSOTN is not one of them imo. Particularly not where audio is involved.

Although a SSOTN Wii U specific edition with the map on the gamepade would interest me greatly if I had a Wii U.

It'd be great... if ANYONE owned a Wii U.

Big screen because I like the XBLA version more after the one-month experience during this winter and TV gaming is always cool and satisfying

But I suffered from the d-pad problem of original XBOX 360 controller   :'(  though I overcame it by spartan practicing

I prefer the big screen PS1 classic, but I play the Chronicles remix on my Vita a hell of a lot more, so it's kind of up there as to which.

I own 3 different versions of SOTN. I like it any way you slice it.

But right now I'm playing through SOTN on my Vita, and Aria of Sorrow on the big screen on my Ouya... LOL

I've become very fond of my Ouya for playing most of my CV games. It's great having them on my big TV and not having to pull the physical copies and consoles out of storage to enjoy them all again.

Big screen emulation of portable games is unquestionably the #1 reason to own an android microconsole like an Ouya.

If only the NVIDIA Shield Console could do that... alas.

The Ouya gets a bad flack. It's a good console for what it is, though I agree with almost everyone that the controller is awful, but you can use DS3 and 360 controllers.

To stay on subject, I already said I prefer big screen, but if I had to play it on handheld, it wouldn't be a dealbreaker... unless it's on the PSP. For some reason I hated controlling SOTN on that system. I'm used to the Saturn controller for SOTN, but even the PS1 version on the DS3 was perfectly playable for me, so I think it's just the PSP. On a side note, I'm interested in playing SOTN on an older TV lol, as nerdy as that sounds. I prefer playing my older consoles on a CRT, but the only CRT I have atm is coax only with no AV  :'(

Freeman, I get what you mean about the PSP. It really had a crummy D-pad and the Analog Nub definitely qualified as a "the best we could do at the time" that was a poor replacement for a thumbstick (having only one also hurt it) and all this got REALLY obvious after the Vita released.

Seriously, save up and shell out for a Vita. It's the best handheld gaming solution, bar none, and both the PS1 and PSP versions of Symphony play AMAZINGLY on it.

I got a vita at launch, but being the stupid slightly younger self I was, but for some quick cash and cus of the lack of titles coming out at the time I sold it  :'( horrible decision cus I do honestly want one again! Its cheaper than the new 3DS, and IMO the games are WAY more appealing (the odd, obscure and niche Japanese style stuff).

Check out Army Corps of Hell, it's a strange action game with some strategy elements and AMAZING metal music (coming from someone who isn't even a metal fan). Exclusive to Vita, wish I still had it  :-[
