Title: Another Castlevania Add On
Post by: GuyStarwind on December 08, 2022, 05:17:00 PM
I saw this earlier and wasn't sure if it's been already posted. Not sure what the original game is but thought I'd share.

…Guess I gotta pick Dead Cells back up.  Pretty neat crossover this time.

I have to admit, I've never hear of Dead Cells until now. I just checked out the playthrough videos and it has caught my attention. Now, having a bit of Castlevania thrown into this makes it sound more interesting.

Dead Cells is an awesome rogue lite that is extremely challenging. I haven't play it in about year, but this DLC sounds freaking amazing. Apparently there is going to be 51 Castlevania music tracks included!

The screenshots look sound and intriguing, got me interested.

However, not a fan of the jokey-a$$ animation, although the quality is fine, I’m not sure what they were going for, as I’ve never associated Dead Cells with childrens comedy.

Of all the recent cross-overs, this seems the most like playing an actual Castlevania game. Just bought the game and tried it out and found the combat to be pretty satisfying, so this should be fun. We'll finally get a taste of rogue-like Castlevania levels and the first Castlevania console platforming we've had in years. Something to tide us over until the next "real" thing at least.

And that's only 'IF' Konami gets their @$$es in gear.

Ack, I see that in the past you had to already meet certain criteria before you could play the DLC chapters. I'd better try to get far into the game now so that I'll be ready to play when Return to Castlevania comes out. Hope I get good enough at it so that I can actually reach the Castlevania themed stages in the first place, though I'm a little worried now.  We'll see exactly how they decide to handle it.

Oh damn, good to know. I'll need to do the same at some point.

Dead Cells has been on my radar for a while, but I just haven't checked it out yet. I'll have to get it soon. It's on PS Plus, so I really don't have an excuse not to at this point.

I hope they let you play some of the Castlevania music in the background of the earlier stages before you even get to the Castlevania stages so we can enjoy our purchase a little while trying to reach them.

Not really a fan of roguelike-focus style and no plans to follow the game altogether. Maybe my mind would change when it gets a very huge discount.

I'm more interested in how the Castlevania IP would be treated in the future. Maybe I will finally rest in peace when they released a brand new Castlevania game that fills the ultimate plot hole: how exactly Julius and his comrades fought in 1999.

Dead Cells is a very well done mix of Castlevania and Dark Souls in 2D. You gotta be okay with dying to learn and advance.

I never finished it but should probably pick it back up now that this DLC is coming out, assuming it's not too expensive.

I saw they made an update 5 months ago that can make the game easier. I'm no longer worried I might not be able to get to the Castlevania sections. I'll give it the good college try with the default settings, but good to know the assist mode is there if I need it.

This kinda sounds like the game Hedes. I never got really far into it because of its play-style. Although it's quite funny at times I just couldn't bring myself up to finish it due to the way it was designed.

Very noice! This'll make it far more accessible to anyone. Games with very specific play-styles are also very limited in of themselves, and thus only reaches a handful of players. By giving these games a bunch of options to change the gameplay difficulties they become more widely accessible and can reach out to a far wider audience. That means good things for the company too as it brings in far more profit then limiting the game to a very narrow demograph. Not everyone's a hardcore gamer, and it's a safe bet that casual gamers outrank the hardcore crowd by a big margin.

I was looking at a list of Castlevania related Captain N episodes, and had to chuckle when I saw the title "Return to Castlevania". Wonder if we'll see any more Captain N references lol.

Return to Castlevania looks better than the main campaign of Dead Cells, itself.

So far…great game, content, control and humor…

But so far am not liking the mixing job in the CV tunes…vampire killer seems they added way too much boost at 250-400 hz, sounds way too muddy down there.

Hey guys, I played Dead Cells once when it was fairly new because it was already being compared to Castlevania, and my impression was "this is neat, I should come back to it soon!" but for some reason I didn't. :(

My question is, should I take some time to familiarize myself with the base game before diving into this DLC?

I was concerned that it might take a while to level up to the point I could even reach the Castlevania stages, so I played the game a while before the expansion was released.  Turns out, I didn't really need to do that, since the exit to the first Castlevania stage can be found in the first stage.  All you need is a few runs before the content is available.  It would be quite possible to just jump into the game.  Up to you how comfortable you want to be with the mechanics before tackling the Castlevania stages or how leveled up you'd like to be.  You could learn them in the Castlevania stages or other stages.

No need, you can tangle things in any order you want, the learning curve will be the same same no matter where you go

My thoughts so far :

Great game! I hadn’t played Dead Cells so far but I love it’s breaking-wall humor, referencing and mocking other metroidvanias , even when outside of the castlevania DLC.

As for the castlevania stuff :

It is funny, and a breath of fresh air. I like it better than Bloodstained RoTN already, the Dead Cell system is the perfect implementing of Rogue Like in a 2D, it is a pity they couldn’t do this with Bloodstained like they original promised in the KS. With that being said, the controls of Dead Cells are much better

The music : I was very happy to hear some songs that haven’t had new arrangements in over 2 decades. I am thinking the Dracula resurrection song / last boss music from Castlevania IV for example. This is great! But many mixes are feeling rushed, and I felt the same way about many (non castlevania) tunes on Super Smash ultimate , it was largely quantity over quality. But I can’t fully judge yet, I’ve only heard about 6 tunes of the 60 available. But yeah, as noted earlier, the sound mixing feels a bit off, its like either the bottom end is muddying things or the high end/midrange frequencies are dampened…

I made it to Clock Tower today, and almost made it to drac for the first time I think, but I did something stupid…and this game really punishes your for doing stupid things. But I love this aspect, it really forces you to think before you press a button (or don’t…) too slow by a second and it’s instant death and back to square one…

But the run to the Clock Tower had some really funny moments only a true CV diehard would get…

So been playing around a bit.

Holy F , the Castlevania themed items are awesome, even though it’s just a costume , I feel like I am Sotn z Maria running around killing things the way she is animated.

Deaths Scythe is bloody awesome…overpowered as heck if you find one with base damage, and the after effect when you kill enemies…such sweetness, Konami shoulda thought of that

The cross feels classic

Holy Water is strong but you can’t spam it like the old days…

Finding and using Maria’s Cat…lol

I unlocked the Maria costume which is neat because it's a complete transformation visually. Now I have to tackle the Clocktower. You can switch all music to Castlevania tracks in the options menu from the title screen. I've been playing Dead Cells for years and this is a great collaboration.

Over 4000 HPs and Dracula just cheesed me in 3 shots….

I did thankfully manage to play richter mode and unlock his costume this time though.

I've got to Dracula a few times using the Simon costume. I think it's fun the things Dracula says while you fight him. You had to read the text, but he says things like (btw some of these are not exact I'm going off memory:

You're ancestors did better.

Nice dodge, your ancestors would be proud.

(If you die) I guess I'll wait for your descendant.

Our families used to be friends.

(If you die) I had such high hopes for this fight.

I'm sure he says others and might say things different based on the costume I'm using. After I beat him with Simon, I'll do Richter and Trevor.

You have to do the 'next to impossible' to get the real ending?? Who in the hell thought that was a good idea!? Talk about a dick move. Very few gamers out there will be able to do those modes cause not everyone's a hardcore gamer. And it definitely isn't fair to the casual gamers either.

There is even an extra stage and end boss that only occurs in Hell mode . So yeah…

I am on last level of Expert mode now and think I have a good shot at beating last boss. I think I have a good shot at beating , we shall see…I think I found a good way to cheese things (heavy crossbow is my cheese weapon) , so we shall see…

I should clarify that as of now, the only hidden boss and level are in Hell Mode, and they are non-Castlevania related. Being able to access this level also requires you to take a specific path.

Being that I have been so focused on obtaining this particular achievement , I have not yet attempted to take the Castlevania route , so I have no idea if anything new is there in Hell mode…

The good news is that I’ve gotten good enough to make it to the hidden level and last boss in Hell mode…

The bad is that the last boss himself is a prick and continually heals himself while dealing crazy damage…

Only discovered about this today.
I never played Dead Cells, I don't like the artstyle, but now I may give it a try.
I wonder how much did Motion Twin pay for the Castlevania license and what are the boundaries of it. Like, could any studio just buy the license and make a full-fledged Castlevania game?

Also the thread says "another castlevania addon"...what's the other?

NVM I found it, it's Obakeidoro.

Been trying it out, it's not bad! Aside from maria immediately giving me the strong independent woman speech it's obvious a lot of effort went in this content, also the fast-paced dead cells combat works decently with castlevania. Definitely a better gameplay than grimoire of souls, even tho nothing is perfect. I think I am going to stick around to unlock at least all the castlevania stuff. Only found maria and simon's outfits, rebound rock and holy water so far.

Brawlhalla is another recent crossover.  Nowhere as exciting as Dead Cells though.
