Castle of Cagliostro's influence on the series

-DracXX's castle is based off of Cagliostro's Castle
-Lupin falls down a long false floor leading to an underground water tunnel filled with corpses, and even frogmen that come out like mermen
-Lupin and the count have their final stand on the hands of the clocktower, like CV4's mummy battle, and in LOD there's a puzzle involving the hands and using them as a platform, like in the film
-Clocktower with gears as obstacles
-Lupin detatches a gear, forcing it to fall out of place and go crashing down, like in CV4
-Not the castle, but the clocktower crashes down once the villain is defeated(tho the villains death isn't the reason for it crumbling), also causes the Acqueduct to crumble, reminds me of the bridge crumbling after beating the clocktower in CV3
-Ancient greek-like structures hidden away
-This ones definitely less likely, but Fujiko in this film reminds me of Yuko in Aria and Dawn, not just the blonde hair but also snoopong around and helping, but just me stretching it.

I guess CV would return the favor, as a Cagliostro game with a lot of similarities to CV came out on the MSX (stairs, hitting candles for items, similar enemies and enemy actions etc)

i really need to see this. i have heard so many great things about the movie over the years.

Your best best is the new blu ray form Diskotek. It's got both English dubs along with the Japanese with eng. subs and TONS of special features, great package. The distributer had it officially on youtube for free years ago but decided to take it down.

It's so hard to believe it was made in the late 70s, the animation looks tons better than a majority of stuff nowadays. I feel like Studio Ghibli fans overlook Cagliostro cus it's been overshadowed by movies like Totoro and Spirited Away. And hot damn that soundtrack!

Wow, this definitely has tons of similarities to CastleVania.  I thought the window in the tower holding the bride looks similar to the windows in Dracs room in CastleVania 1.  Can you suggest any other Japanimes that resemble CastleVania?  I know of Vampire Hunter D, which is really obvious!
Been here since the 1st NES CastleVania.

Hey Freeman, is Castle of Cagliostro called "Lupin" in Japan? I bought a dvd set a while back which was the Lupin Trilogy, is it the same thing or a different set of films altogether? Just wondering what to watch first.

I remember us having a discussion about that castle from Lupin in another thread. And the similarities between that castle and Dracula's castle in CV was quite remarkable! I'd even go as far as to say the "lifted" it out of the anime and stuck it in CV.

Sorry my apologies Freeman and X, I found my DVD today and it's called Lupin the 3rd but the chick is on the front and she looks like the main character.

Now that you mention it, the windows are very similar! Besides VHD and Lupin, I can't think of any.

Cagliostro is the second in a long series of films starring the manga character Lupin the third. The films don't follow a flowing narrative, so you can watch them in any order without missing any essential bits. Same goes for the TV shows and TV specials. Idk about the manga though.

It's a really fun series with lovable characters, amazing music, and a distinct style, plus you can jump in anywhere without having to see anything else. The two I recomend the most are Cagliostro and Farewell to Nostradamus(pretty hard to come by, but I found it in full, elgish dub on youtube)

I just stumbled across an anime series called Hellsing Unlimited.  Very nice animation, lots of crosses and glowing eyes.  Not exactly CastleVania, but it does scratch a certain Vampire itch.
Been here since the 1st NES CastleVania.

My buddy and I were watching Hellsing Ultimate in school a week before grad  ;D It was pretty cool, well animated and full of great action, but idk. Even with the gothic style and action I never really got into it.
