The mystery of the Vampire Killer's appearance

What do you think? In most of the artwork, it's a leather whip. It sounds like a leather whip when you swing it, but when you flail it (most of the time), it sounds like a chain whip (if it sounds at all). In addition, starting with the Dracula X series, it has always been a chain whip in game in the 2D games (Castlevania Chronicles excluded) to my knowledge. In addition, in Lament, the icon for the VK is a morning star on the end of a chain, but it appears as a black whip in game.

So is it a leather whip or a chain whip?

Please disregard any game where you start with a leather whip but can upgrade it to a chain whip when posting your decision.

The leather and chain are one in the same and neither at the same time  ;)

I think it has to do with animating it. I think they use they use leather now for the 3D games cause it's probably easier to animate it in 3D than a chain. And it's probably just easier to recognize and animate a chain whip in the 2D games as opposed to a leather whip.

I don't really know. I don't program and I haven't done extensive sprite work in years, and I'm not a professional, but that's always what I thought it was about.

But I think it's officially leather

Metal would definitely work better against ten feet-high monsters. Well, I cannot really tell why, but for me it's made of metal.

@Bean:
You could be right there. Just look at cv4's different whips. Wich looks better? Leather or chain? :3

Well, I don't know why they animate it the way they do, but I think a leather whip is better.  After all, a leather whip would be lighter and easier for a person to swing.  Besides, in actuality leather might be faster and speed could affect the amount of damage done.

To be honest, the appearance doesn't really matter as far as strength goes because it is a magical whip.  Therefore, what it is made of is irrelevant.  Leather whips look nicer too.

Especially when it's moonstar form acts exactly like a whip when swung which is just weird.

Maybe two were actually made, and the Belmonts/Morris just choose whichever one they felt like grabbing that morning?

That way, they have another whip, juuuuust in case they lose the other.

It's a chain says I. A leather one is easier to draw though so it gets shows as that a lot.

I guess the Vampire Killer doesn't have an "official" design. The Castlevania team at Konami has had many different designers, illustrators etc so they've just went for the look they wanted for the moment without paying much attention to what it looked like in previous games.

Though since IGA has a real whip resembling the Vampire Killer and it's made of leather I assume the leather whip is what we should assume is the real thing.

Look guys, the reason it went to a chain whip is because when Sara's soul saw Richter, excuse my language, but she shit a brick and transformed.

Pretty much. That's just kinda how most of the games are. :P It's a short leather whip, then it upgrades to a longer leather whip, and then it upgrades to a chain whip with a morning star-like spiked ball at the end.
Oh yeah, and also:

Soda as well.

i thought many games went leather>chain>long chain. morning star was mostly visible at the end of both chain whips.
