Title: My thoughts on current gen as a whole
Post by: KaZudra on March 10, 2016, 04:08:13 PM
I don't think this gen is all that worth it, I see PC gaming rising and demolishing the competition, but to express these feelings, we got to go back.
Console Wars was a fuel to a Competitive fire that strived the two leading consoles to 1-up each other, the results were some amazing classics. If you bought a game for your SNES and your friend bought the same game for his genesis, chances are that they were entirely different games making the crash and play experience phenomenal, either you swore to SEGA or Nintendo, a few generations pass, now you're playing unique Soul Calibur 2's at each other's places, enjoying Smash bros Melee then a round of Halo and some good old Onimusha Blade warriors. Last gen, the Console wars were still brewing, Nintendo was cast aside but still essential, we got amazing games from the PS3 and Xbox360 and then PC was on the rise from the back seat, all in all each and every platform had something great to offer.

Now, with this Generation.... we get sequelitus and HD remakes, Definitive editions on games already previously released and aren't even old enough or "classic" enough, instead of a usual 70% likeliness we get a mere 95% likeliness, instead of boasting great games it's now boasting stupid shit like "resolution" and "frames" despite 98% of all games ever releasing being 60fps now it's debated as if it were a new thing, stupid shit. It's been less and less about what it has to offer and more about what it offers "better" even though nobody really cared up until this point, and worst of all It's trying to act like PC doesn't exist when it's currently the platform with the most games being bought.

Nintendo, on the other hand, being discriminated for using last-gen equivalent hardware is just chucking along, offering more and more games, not really caring about boasting meaningless things about hardware (which usually always backfired in PS4 and XB1 cases) and just did what they've always done.

I've Always was a PC Gamer, but I always used to believe that it was a great companion to consoles (kinda like having a GC and PS2) I never Fathomed a time where the main consoles would be so bad that PC would be not only the best platform, but kind of the only main platform and the go-to companion would be not only inferior to the main consoles, but better. Hardware is clearly not an issue, phenomenal games have been made on inferior hardware for decades when Arcades were the best of the best, Hell, when PC strutted Crysis, the Xbox 360 and PS3 still made phenomenal games.

Alas, now we have two main consoles trying to strut whos better but has nothing to truly offer, Nintendo has won the Console War this gen and PC, if you haven't got into PC gaming yet I've got a feeling you will by the end of this cycle. My only hope is somehow these idiots can brainstorm and remember why console gaming was great and resume a great thing instead of idiotical excuses how the hardware limitations can't allow this or that, the limitations never stopped anyone before and we've gotten some of the most creative things in video games simply because of those limitations, these AAA game developers need to have a long talk with Nintendo and John Carmack and maybe learn something because this gen is supposed to be great, not mediocre.

If someone asks me for recommendations, I'll have to be honest, PC gaming has never been so widely accessible and the Wii-U has never been so great, but if it's console gaming you truly seek, go for that last gen platform you didn't get. There's too many gems to count.

I play my vita more than my ps4.

I'll be getting Bloodtstained on Vita as well.

It's the greatest handheld I've ever owned by far.

I hear what you're saying, but I'm looking through a slightly different set of lenses.

The issue with this gen is that a lot of its games are coming out on previous gen consoles.
Examples: MGS, Persona 4 Arena, Blazblue, a few others which don't currently come to mind.

I'm in disagreement about the HD remasters because I believe it's still a good opportunity to capitalise and allow people who don't have access to last gen consoles to experience certain games. (If current consoles played all the older games then this would be a different story). I do not class these games such ans Zelda WW and TP HD in the same category as "Remakes"; even if they have more content they're re-mastering an existing title when they use the same engine and add frills and shit. Perhaps certain games like Resident Evil have over-capitalised when their iterations had already been re-released but I for one don't care, I simply don't buy those games.

HD Remakes are different, it's like FFVII's upcoming remake which is like comparing apples and oranges. The games are completely different, not made with the same engine, look and feel completely different etc.

In terms of originality in games of course the NES>PS2/Early PS3 era was the Golden Age of gaming. However, I don't really have an issue with the games being released at present.

What does irk me is that fighting games are getting a lot more updates (aside from SFII) than they used to. In the case of Street Fighter V I am glad I will only ever have to buy one copy.

I agree with Belmontoya that a lot of good things have come to handhelds. 3DS surprised me, although I can't say I like it better than the DS, FE and ALBW were something to behold.

Kinda thankful many fighters are still coming out for PS3.  It saves me quite a bit of money that I could spend on a new fightstick.

For some reason the first thing that came to mind were the SEGA 3D Classics, which are technically ports of existing games.  Despite that, they're really well made and are worth a buy imo.  So many hours spent on Space Harrier, Galaxy Force II, Outrun, Fantasy Zone and Gunstar Heroes 3D.

True those were probably not the best examples because they're awesome games, but examples nonetheless.

However, I was just inferring that games are out on so many different consoles these days.. Even MGS on GBA, that's crazy isn't it.

Did you know about the Brook Converters for fight sticks? There are all different types eg PS3>PS4, XB360>PS4 etc

I got mine from a korean website etokki.com for around 40 AUD and I use my Qanba Q4 for PS4 games.
