I can judge this month's contest. But I have no idea on how 3d works. I just base my judgment on how well (ehem, pretty) it looks. hehehe.

@ZSG:

Make the handle about twice as long. Also the links need to be longer in one section to work right. They're like 'ovals' that interlock. They wouldn't function correctly if all sides are even.

Good start Zero.

What program are you using?

My suggestion is to be sure that you are using good references. Grab some good images off the net and just copy what you see!

You eyes will make the adjustments for you:

Once you have the main shapes down, you can start to add adjustments to make it more your own.

I'm doing a custom version of the VK if that's okay.

Of course, in matter of fact custom work is encouraged!

I was merely suggesting that even with custom work it has to be based in reality.

The work (mainly the silhouette) needs to stand on it's own before you start adding customizations.

That way when you do add the custom work to the main model it will have a element of realism to it. (If that makes sense.)

Take a image of your model and then turn it all black. If you can tell what it is just by the silhouette you will know that you have done a good job!

Behold!
Is it not a thing of beauty!

Simplest thing I could think of. The whole see-through thing is going to be interesting to figure out though.

Pretty!

If you are using Maya, then you can just set the transparency for see-thru. I believe it's under special effects or you could just make a transparency map:

If you are using Max, then you can make a transparency material for see-thru:

Haha, thanks!
I can export this to OBJ and put it on that webside Darkman has.
However, none of the rendering colors/settings export.  You just end up with a white/gray mesh.
xD

You can indeed import the maps in, just separately.

I don't know the actual setting off the top of my head, I have to import something to the site and I am sick as a dog right now.

Ask someone that entered last month's contest...

Agreed. No need for a write-up unless Jorge requests one.

I leave my feedback though:

You have a solid entry for the contest this month, however there still is room for improvement particular on the whip handle it could use more definition. The "keeper"  (the tip of the whip handle stock)just comes off as a solid oval. The handle translates the same way just a bunch of ovals stacked upon one another. (I am sure exactly how you made it that way) Now the "cracker" part (the actual chained portion) is very well done and the barbed portions are a nice touch. Same goes for the spiked ball. As for the spiked ball you could work a little bit more n your corrosion and rusty areas for your texturing. I am loving the decorative holder for the whip but not so much the wood texture. It translates too much like a meat cutting board to me which is unforutnate because the design of it is really well done. All in all a very solid entry, but you also win this month by the fault. Would you like to go ahead a make the theme for  this month's 3-D Contest?

Congrats Jorge! Guess you scared everyone this month!

Yup. He would scare everyone. He has a huge background in 3D modeling.

Wait, I won?
Nice critique! I should point out that my whip is almost an exact rendition of the one in Castlevania III's intro.

I agree about the meat cutting board critique. However, that's not really 3d modeling issue as much as it is a texturing/skinning/rendering issue.  I guess though I consider myself a pretty good modelmaker, I am lacking when it comes to those other aspects.

I can always do alternate textures, though.

Did no one make anything else? I thought someone had done a sword. Anyway, thank you all. I will award myself in a week or so, when I return.
