Basically the games developed by KCEN and KCEK and why.
Personally, I'd say the Saturn version of SOTN, but that's cheating since it's a port and not an original game. With that in mind, I'd say the the original on the 64. It was the second Vania I've played, and I've loved it ever since. The horror elements and atmosphere are spectacular, obviously taking it's atmospheric approach from SC4. The gameplay is very satisfying, and while the control layout can be confusing, they actually work very well on the 64 pad. Plus, it has something I love but don't see done well so often: Linear level progression yet the levels themselves are nonlinear and require some exploration. My only problem is really with Rosa in Reinhardt's story.
Don't get me wrong, Rosa's introduction in the rose garden is really simple but memorable and a nice calm moment in the game. Her attempted suicide scene is also perfectly done and another very memorable moment. Then when she attacks you, its a decent boss fight, and you feel her agony and learn she was turned into a vampire after Dracula cursed her. Then when she is killed after she protects you from death, it feels anti climactic and cheesey. Gets even worse when she comes back as a human at the end. Its a lovely little moment, but just there so the hero can have a love interest to end the story with. I think it would've been more effective if she died after you fight her, and after learning she was human, and not come back at the end. That would've been a great drive to wanna kill Dracula even more, and it would've given the game an "anything goes, even sad stories in this tale". Idk, just having her pop out of nowhere to save you and then come back at the end defeats the lonely and mysterious feel of the game and makes it more RoB action story-ish. Just MHO.
I like the concept that the "Dracula" which vampire hunters first meet at throne room is not real Dracula but merely an impostor of him, though his dressing and personal atmosphere is very Dracula-ish.
I liked that twist as well. And when Malus is revealed and transforms into a younger Dracula was a great touch. I remember how kickass he looked too lol.
