I want to know about people's opinion of 4kids dubbing of anime (Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, One-Piece etc.)

In my opinion, they're horrendous but i'd want to know other people's thought.

I don't want to watch crappy dubbed anime after learning Japanese.

I voted the original Japanese option. But personally, I'd rather see anime dubbed to the original Japanese scripts as close as possible without censoring anything, since trying to read the words below the screen while trying to watch the anime is rather jarring at times.

I'm a speed reader when it comes to anime, so I stick with subs, and nothing altered in the plot.

I watched a bunch of dubbed animes and don't see why people dislike it so much. I understand that some dubbing is horrible, but some is actually excellent. The Death Note dub for example is excellent IMHO.

... Also, the Funimation dub of Crayon Shin-Chan is absolutely hilarious despite being totally disloyal to the source material.

If it weren't for 4Kids dubs, I wouldn't like anime at all. They're cool in my book. Consider them an early Otaku Recruitment Service, if that helps.
Eventually, when kids get older, they can go back and watch the originals, and find what they missed at an age where they can better process it.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

the way I see it, they started out harmless enough, and I could honestly accept things like calling riceballs "jelly donuts".

but they started to get more heavy handed with it later on jelly donuts were no longer rice balls. instead, they'd outright edit them into sandwiches and stuff. Yugioh is a teenage oriented show, but they localized it for children. imagine my surprise when I learned how brutal the Manga and original anime actually is. Same for One Piece. That one is possibly their worst censorship job, holy shit.

Their censorship for the latest Yu-Gi-Oh movie, The Dark Side of Dimensions was a lot better than in the original cartoon, like they didn't edit out the guns or anything.  Unfortunately, the dorky slapstick humour remained, and there was the oddness of it being clearly set in Japan but with the American names.  It was still an improvement though, and the new remix of the 'Your Move' theme in the credits was pretty good.  It's bugging me though that I haven't been able to find out if it's only available in the dub version in the European and American releases.  I wouldn't be surprised if the original is a lot more subtle and nuanced in a lot of ways.
I got into YGO due to the dub after seeing that it's got a lot of ancient Egypt influences (which I'm a bit of a sucker for), but I far prefer the original.  The background music, the voice acting, the theme songs, are all so much better in the original.  That said, I mostly only watch it for the Egypt-centric plot-arcs, especially the Millennium World/ Memory World final arc, and season 0.  The memory world stuff is beautiful, and the music alone at points can hit you with the emotions stick.  The dub on the hand just kind of stomps all over that sadly.

I found as well that the original touches on some of the original ancient Egyptian terminology a lot better than the dub.  Little touches like that make you realise more just how much effort was put into the series, and the fact that they had an Egyptology consultant for some of the stuff.  The use of terminology such as heka, bas, kas, etc, made me happy as it's inspired by real ancient Egyptian mythology.  In season 0, when Shadi first shows up, it really does go even deeper into the ancient Egyptian mythology.  There are Millennium scales for a good reason.  That all just sadly got dumbed down I feel in the dub, and made it less obvious.

Subtitles are my default for me, but that's probably due to being a big DBZ fan over the years, and absolutely hating Funimation's DBZ dub.

Death Note's dub was really good. Didn't have much choice though, since I watched it on Adult Swim. If I had the choice from the beginning, though, I probably would've went with the sub just out of habit.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

Religious reasons. Duh.

Would make sense.  Possibly worries that it all sounded too much like 'evil black magic' or something.  Bah.

I think that one of the things that I like so much about the inclusion of Kas etc being part of a person's soul reflects how in ancient Egyptian mythogy, the soul was made up of multiple parts - the Ba, the Ka, the Ren, the Sheut, and the Ib, with the body itself being the Khat.  The Sheut is the person's shadow, the Ib is the heart (the seat of will and emotion), while the Ren is their name, the Ba their personality, and Ka the 'vital spark of life' (in a sense the series got Ba and Ka the wrong way round).  Yami Yugi seems to be Atem's Sheut combined with some of his Ba, while his Ren is the seal on Zorc.  Yugi is the rest of Atem's reincarnation, the other half of his soul.  Evidence for 'Yami Yugi' being Atem's Sheut is how when he transforms in the series, especially noticeable in season 0, he emerges as a shadowed form.  However, once the Ceremonial Duel is complete, and he's become complete again as Atem, when he 'possesses' Yugi in Dark Side of Dimensions, he emerges in a light, firey form, symbolizing how he's no longer just a shadow.  The question you can then ask is whether Atem is in the afterlife within Yugi's soul (judging how people themselves can create their own dimensions in the film), or whether he's become as a separate version of the soul, his own being in a way.  I vote the former, as Yugi becomes more like Atem as he grows up.  His 'life' has moved on, able to put behind his life as Atem and able to be Yugi.  Through 'passing on' he's able to fully join with the rest of his soul that is Yugi.

These are just my thoughts.  Like I said, I'm a bit of a geek for this sort of thing.  Sorry for the bit of side-tracking.  I just feel that subtle and important details of the series get missed out more, or make less sense (along with the Shadow Realm stuff) following the kiddifying of it, together with the increased focus on the card game aspect in the Duel Monsters series.  At least that managed to get brought into a more interesting angle with the spirit duels stuff.  I think that it's one of my big bug-bears with the dub really.  It just doesn't make as much sense, and it loses some of the main charms of the original.  Plus Atem sounds waaaay too old, sorry Dan Green.

[ I also think that the anme missed a few nice points about how Bobassa/Hasan is actually the light counterpart to Zorc, and how it seems to be that the spirit of Bakura's ring is a mix of Aknadin/Akhenaden, the thief King (that Bakura is, like Yugi, a partial reincarnation of it seems), and Zorc, with Akhenaden's mummy present there with Yami-Bakura and Yami Yugi during the Shadow RPG, with that taking place in the museum, behind the tablet. ]

It was said that the English dubbing of Berserk actually had a better voice cast than the original series did in Japan, which was not well received. So make of that what you will. I can do either or. Depends on my mood, really. I do prefer my VNs to have a Japanese language track only, and most do.
