Title: Should there be a "Favorite Topics and Polls" SubForum?
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on June 25, 2012, 08:00:47 PM
A newbie poster posted this question, and I figured I should ask the community.

Having an optional board to go to just for these sort of things is not a bad idea.
If there are people who do not like those topics or feel they are 'passe', they can choose not to go to that board.

What do you think, gang?

Favorite threads are bound to happen in any community of forums. I see no actual reason to prevent their creation, as they can sometimes lead to interesting discussions in their own right that may not have come up otherwise.

They are however a clutter problem, so a separate area for them is exactly the thing we need.

Should it be Castlevania only though? Well, to be fair this is a Castlevania forum primarily. HCG101 exists but I rarely visit that section. I don't know how much of a problem it is there for these types of threads. I can imagine it wouldn't be as common there, but who am I to say?

If it is to remain Castlevania themed only, then a sub forum of the Castlevania General sounds right though.

Overall it comes down to providing something that has demand from some users. It will get used, there is no doubt about it. For all those who don't like those threads, they can elect not to visit that sub-forum. It's a win-win as far as I'm concerned. I don't see it hurting anyone.

I'm down for it. I like posting about this stuff and whatnot.

I would have supported UZO's point here, but I also think those threads are immature. They're purely subjective.
Hey, man, I like SCVIV! Yeah, okay. Good for you. I like trains.  :P

They'd be in their now sub forum. You wouldn't have to encounter or deal with them. Don't like them? Don't visit the sub forum. I see no reason to stifle someone else's fun because you don't like it, when you won't even have to encounter it unless you elect to.

Along those lines though, I do see a flaw in the idea to put it as an actual sub forum to the General Castlevania Discussion. When someone posts in the sub forum, the "new" icon for General Castlevania Discussion will light up. Maybe not a big deal, but something to consider.

Ehh I like the forum just the way it is. Kinda pointless to make an entire separate sub-section just for the noobs to spam "whats ur fav" topics. Just be a bit more lenient with them being on the main discussion & it'll be fine. (i.e. shouldn't be more than 2 made in the same week)

The "what's your favorite" topics have increased quite a bit during the past month that I've noticed. I feel it should have a section of it's own so it doesn't congest the General discussion board. No harm in it really.

I think the best thing to do here is couple this with a posting games board, and make it so posts don't count toward your post total.

It worked for the Anti-chapel.

People care about post totals?
That's almost as silly as people caring for respect points.

Digital Press forums has done this a long long time, they keep it in classic discussion, though favorite topics still pop up on the main game board there. There's really no way to 100% stop it as some won't read the rules or bother looking in that particular section. If tthe favorite topics can be curbed out of the other sections, would be alright, but again not 100% foolproof.

You'll never be able to stop it leaking into the other areas 100%, but it'll make the community look and feel more welcoming to newbies without annoying people who've seen the same topics 1000 times. I say making it it's own section isn't a bad idea.

Sounds like this is settled.
Thanks for your time and input, people!

The board being titled "Classic Castlevania Threads" makes me think "discussion for classic cv games only". I'd still go with "Castlevania Polls & Favorites".

Sounds good.
However, placing 'polls' in the forum name implies that Castlevania polls shouldn't be in its parent board, which is not the case.
