General Castlevania Discussion / Re: LRG OSTs
« Last post by ForgemasterWolf on August 12, 2023, 07:55:00 AM »
Given that Konami included a high quality soundtrack inside the Advance Collection, they'd probably use that in the game rather than the awful ones Konami put on YouTube and Spotify. As for the tapes, I don't know if they'll use the high quality ones or the old Konami masters because they make think it would make it sound "authentic".

If you want comprehensive Castlevania music then looking at the Limited Run Games stuff is a waste of time tbh, check out the Black and Red box music collection or any of the old ones they did. Unless the LRG one is less expensive than them.

Also, if you have the Advance Collection on Steam you can rip the ones from the collection's sound test by following this guide I made.

General Castlevania Discussion / LRG OSTs
« Last post by Abnormal Freak on August 11, 2023, 11:02:08 PM »
Despite offering up the TMNT soundtracks on CD, vinyl, and cassette independent of any game bundles, Limited Run Games (or Konami) decided to lock the comprehensive three-disc CD set for the Castlevania Advance Collection behind a wallet-pillaging ultimate edition complete with useless trinkets galore. You can buy the records and tapes separately but not the compact discs.

Wondering if anyone has any insight on what to expect from the OSTs. Better recording quality, or will it be the same old botched Konami masters we love to hate? It's frustrating that LRG gives so little info on their soundtracks.

I do know Audi Sorlie had a hand in the TMNT OSTs, so maybe he got to do new recordings of the game music for CV. Wishful thinking.

“but also to give our work its own identity so it doesn't seem we're just retreading Kojima's work without paying her”

About that, they already traced her works and she never got an official credit besides passing mentions in their artbook.

Some examples: https://imgur.com/a/TUov01R

And there is also them ripping off one of Junki Sakuraba’s fan work, this one is a bit passable since the pose was done before in other pieces of media but it’s pretty suspicious.

I can overlook the Junki Sakuraba one since as you said, it's a common pose and might just be coincidence, but I agree they definitely should have credited Ayami Kojima for the first seasons, yeah.

Yeah, I generally agree with you. The only caveat I had is that is that I can see Mr. Stark's point, it's just that he was making it in a foolish and disrespectful way. Like, the characters are usually re-designed every time a project is remade, so as to distinguish it from a re-release: Kojima's DXC Dracula, Maria, and Annette looked a lot different from the original Rondo versions. So if Mr. Stark had been wiser he would have said "we're changing our characters the same way, not only to make them in keeping with the French Revolution setting but also to give our work its own identity so it doesn't seem we're just retreading Kojima's work without paying her." But his insult of the old Rondo art was foolish, since it does have its charm.

TotK, finally. Beaten 25 Shrines and explored a bit of each of the 3 maps.

EDIT: Just beat Phantom Ganon’s a$$ with some perfect flurry rushes

General Castlevania Discussion / Re: Nocturne release date announced

People here are a tough crowd to please when it comes to authenticity. Given the age of this site, nearly everyone who's still around is an expert in the intricacies of Castlevania lore going back for decades. Now, we tend to be a mature bunch so small departures from the lore can be excused, but larger ones like Netflix seem prone to get on our nerves.

As you guys can tell I'm personally very excited about the series, despite being a (comparatively) 'old hand' around here as well, but that has as much to do with my personality as anything else--like I implied above I did do a bit of study into Caribbean slavery when I was younger, so seeing it portrayed in a setting that makes a bit of sense (the French Revolution, i.e by extension the early-modern French colonial empire) very much tickles my fancy, enough that I can overlook the departures from Castlevania canon.

I wouldn't say the overall opinion has changed that much--IIRC the first season was well received here, but folks didn't take well to the later ones, especially given some of the, er, edginess. Like I said, we're a mature crowd, but that stuff went over the line for many of us, and I recall having to cool down a few arguments over the subject. If you're seeing the same sentiments on Twitter, I'd say it probably has to do with the popularity of Rondo/Symphony. Symphony is one of those games that had an impact even outside its typical fanbase; even people who don't like Castlevania acknowledge its influence on video game aesthetic history thanks to Yamane and Kojima's work. So a larger audience would be eyeing the new adaptation with a more critical eye. Though I must add that while my personal circle of acquaintances matches your experience, the larger, general-anime-fan-audience I've seen on Twitter seems to be unabashedly enthusiastic in their reaction to the trailer.

Recently there has been some minor drama involving one of the artists for Netflixvania, Steve Stark, he’s a supervising background and concept artist for both of the shows. Well this might start some “tiny” arguments here and there but please be respectful boys and gals. There have been a few articles from bottom of the barrel sites like Niche Gamer and Bounding Into Comics, they’re almost as bad as sites like CBR but the only thing different is their political leaning. I will start with the Niche Gamer article and how it evolved into one of the artists of the series privating his Twitter account for a good while.

The Niche Gamer article which is the genesis of the whole incident is “okay”,  and it’s probably the first time anyone said anything negative about the show from the mainstream side of things, while the author wasn’t disrespectful at all, the whole article amounts to a milquetoast reddit post of someone who played CV3 15 years ago and just watched the show.

While the author is okay, the whole other side of the site and the community around it is pretty annoying. You know that one guy who won’t shut up about the West destroying his anime? Yeah, that’s the whole community.

This pretty much got a lot of people who never played or even are interested in Castlevania to start tweeting with #notgonnawatch yada, yada. Which lead to people commenting on a post of Steve Stark saying that seeing people of color happy for black vampires and hunters included in media makes him happy/make his day. Which lead him break one of the biggest guidelines on the internet ever, do not feed the trolls.

While interacting and fighting with mostly people who never touched a Castlevania game in their entire lives and some game fans here and there, instead of just saying the normal thing “We’re making an original story, these are different characters who share a name” or I could give you one better, just saying nothing. He went on and on which lead to honestly one of the most stupid things to ever grace my eyes relating to Castlevania. Basically saying that Powerhouse disrespects the series/characters is wrong because Ayami Kojima made Dracula go from a “Bela Lugosi knock off” in Vampire’s Kiss to a “hot dad” in SotN and that would mean that Ayami Kojima disrespected the characters. He went on to site Richter’s Dracula X Chronicles design as an example as well, despite ya know? Him looking the same just with different clothes and shorter hair? Man legit has brain worms with his way of thinking, because Dracula, Alucard, Simon and Richter do not apply with the situation he’s and there is a decent chunk of people that hate both the Chronicles and Judgment design and that’s why they stopped using them and went back to the warrior design he had in the X68000 version.

Then shitty website Bounding Into Comics got in with a best of tweet compilation of him and got even more idiots and a few people who actually know their shit until he privated his account for a while. This is a situation where I couldn’t really side with anyone, bottom of the barrel sites, idiots, racists, artists who don’t understand shit and barely anyone with a lick of knowledge about anything. Moral of the story, more people should just stay quiet sometimes, and people shouldn’t be idiots on the internet while defending their works. Also, a lot of people lack self awareness and don't know how to argue their points at all.

So far, it seems that most people aren't too excited about it, well at least from what I saw from people my circles on Twitter and the people on this forum so far. I wonder if the overall opinion has been changing on the adaptations with time, or if it has to do with the popularity of Rondo of Blood/Dracula X Chronicles and many more people playing Symphony of the Night.

They seem to be using the plot points from Bloodlines and Aria for this initial season of Nocturne, it appears. Which I guess is okay, except it would make any plans for either of those stories (more probable is Aria, honestly) kinda shot.

I'm less impressed that they are taking sincere liberties with the maidens from Rondo, turning both Annette and Tera into magic users suddenly as if having Maria wasn't enough. Granted, I'm all for straying away from the "damsel in distress" trope, but it seems forced here.

However that pales in comparison to them showing us Richter's mother as this badass whip-wielding female Belmont, FINALLY after we've all been wanting another shot for one, only to kill her off for the sake of injecting trauma into yet another character's story where it wasn't needed. It feels like she's just this disposable character they made up with the purpose of fridging to make poor Richter angsty....because we all loved that when that was done in S3 of the OG series.  >:(

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Animation looks solid and I'll allow some of those liberties slide if this is meant to be a prequel to Rondo's story in season 2 and the story ends up being better than I'm fearing.

With all due respect there is nothing wrong Damsel in Distress trope just like there is nothing wrong with a
badass tough female characters, creators gave us damsel in distress then damsel it is as there is plenty of Badass female characters in Castlevania both good and evil like Shanoa which one of my favourite characters in CV.
So by changing everything it isn't Castlevania anymore.

For me an adaptation is a seeing the characters I love live on screen telling the story of the games in much finer details without peoples agendas shoved down our throats.

Lords of Shadows is a Godsend compared to the trash adaptation we have now at least with los they didn't claim they are being authintic then ruin everything. Los was an original creation so it can be forgiven for alot of things, they also made Victor Belmont which is the most authentic thing ever about los I loved it.

All in all it will fail and I'm not gonna bother because it seems like a bad fanfic.
