Though I'm not a huge fan of the game, Left 4 Dead has a fucking fantastic intro movie.

Shadows of the Damned does too, mainly because of the music and the abundant darkness. Castlevania really needs to take environmental cues from this game.

Oh, and how could I forget Neo Contra?

This was literally the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title.

I'm hopeless.

I was mostly a goofball in this thread, but in all seriousness I'd have to go with the opening to FF6. Such mysterious and intriguing ambiance! The music sells it with those Magitek Armor's trudging through the snowy storm... damn, quite an epic fucking opening.

It is precisely because it never cared, that people do care.  It's something which it's lacking, because that which it has, it has lackluster of.
^^
You are now reading this in Robert Belgrade's voice.

Then Lords of Shadow 2 just takes a big, semi-solid, smelly, pea-green dump all over everything.

SNES Super Metroid Introduction

Mega Man X Intro

ninja gaiden nintendo nes introduction
Hasn't aged well, but this was excellent for its time.

Final Fight - Arcade Introduction
This one's extremely dated too, but the music and the presentation kind of helped set the overall grim, brutal tone of the game. Well, okay...grim in terms relative to the beat-em-ups of the day. I guess I've kind of thought of it as the video game equivalent of one of Paul Verhoeven's action films (Robocop in particular).

But I think my favorite intro ever, if it counts, would have to be the first 10 seconds you see when you put a quarter into a Double Dragon machine. Like much of that game, its beauty was in its simplicity (I could go on forever); it explained the most vital part of the story right there. Seeing your love interest get socked in the gut and carried off by a group of thugs was almost shocking for me to see the first time (I was like 7, lol), but it instantly drew me in. And I secretly hoped I wouldn't have to fight that guy carrying the machine gun.  :-X

It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.
