My 1 gripe with x68000

The leadup to Dracula. It doesn't make it a worse game obviously, but common, look at this compared to the past:

CV1- The music changes and you're at the stairs; you KNOW you're finally at the end.
CV2- You go through the ruins of CV after destroying Drac before, and its a mysterious theme, fantastic buildup (hate when ppl complain there aren't enemies here)
CV3- Same as CV1, classic
CV4- Best IMO. Goes quiet after beating death, blocks fall, you go up, down the dark hall and the torches light as the music changes to a sped up version of the intro(in the US version anyway). It's so superbly done.
X68000- Lazy copy and paste hallway, few enemies, no music change, just get to the famous stairs. Woopdy doo.

It's the 1 time the game feels lazy. Like I said, doesn't make the game worse at all, its just such a disappointment. Pretty much all the other linear CV games make a big deal about getting to Dracula (besides the Adventure)

I just watched a playthrough on youtube. It doesn't look like a very fun game to me, even though I love the original CV for NES.
Also both Death and Dracula seem to have anti-climatic rooms that precede them, take a lot of hits, and don't really inflict much damage to the player.

I can see they also took the "fall through the screen" mechanic as well as the hordes of blocks you can break and implemented that into CVII (only with holy water).

It might not have a build up to Dracula but it does have the most classy Dracula intro where he suddenly appears sitting on his throne, takes a sip from a glass of blood, and then throws it at the ground. I think that pretty much evens it out.

X68000 was a treat for fans.

But it certainly lacks the atmosphere of other classicvanias.
The whole game is a little dry in my opinion. Even the music. I remember actually turning the music down and listening to classical music when I used to play it on ps1.
I don't think it compares of the presentation of cv1-2-3-4 bloodlines, rondo.

I play it often though because It's the only classicvania I could get on my vita other than rondo chronicles.

The worst monsters are human.

It is the first to do it, and it's one of the most iconic moments in the series since it returned in SOTN. The intro to Drac is great, and the little details during the fight (the fire on the torches seems to animate faster, Drac's fireballs have faces on them, Drac's face morphs during the fight like in 4, and a few extra moves to his second form), so all of that is great, just the lack of a good leadup felt anti climactic for the series.

I'd recommend it to any CV fan, but personally I'd say play the X68000 version. I always found the PS port to feel REALLY stiff with the controls, plus PS dpad isn't as good as a keyboard for it. I liked Death's hallway personally. It plays on the empty canvases from the original. I remember my little bro watching me play that part and he saw that it was a painting in the background and he was like "That's a PAINTING!? That's trippy as hell!" ;D

A treat for fans is the best description of the game. Through the game it feels like a celebration of the series, especially the Simon games (obviously, it's his game lol). And while it lacks that classic horror atmosphere until stage 7, it goes for a more epic Conan feel, which is mostly apparent in the end credits. It's like Rondo going for the anime style.

Haha, a painting as the final boss, POR before POR was invented!!

Also Dracula in Vampire killer's first form is all skeletal with a blood red cape and a human head. This would've been prior to 1989 wouldn't it..
Does anyone read Berserk? I think Kentaro Miura may have got some inspo for designing Void, the first godhand from this.

That was always an awesome design for Drac. I haven't read Berserk but if CV inspired it that's awesome since CV has so many traces from pop culture.

Definitely recommend a read, but pace yourself as it's been going from 1989 and still kicking.

Oh, I just looked it up and I recognize it now! I used to want the Dreamcast game based on it, and I saw a bit of one of the films on netflix. The artwork is absolutely epic! I'll finish up the movie on netflix and look into the manga more, but damn, the longest manga I've read was Golgo 13, and we didn't get all of them in the US (about 23 volumes, but thank goodness for fan translations  :D)
