Title: Hobbiezzz
Post by: beingthehero on February 23, 2012, 12:26:01 PM
Do you all have any hobbies?
I collect and build scale models, which take up a reasonable amount of time. Unless you're fantastically talented, it can take a bit of a learning curve, but there's a ton of articles dispensing advice and tips.

It's actually kind of a huge hobby with its own sub-groups and communities. For example, I stick with WWII armored fighting vehicles, which is pretty common, and Soviet/Russian jet fighters, which is a little more niche. But I have no idea what those who build model ships or cars do, and those are kind of huge in terms of communities.

Sorry about the photo quality, I used my droid's camera to take these.

Figures, like these, can be prohibitive to build. A lot of people who do wonders with scale models absolutely loathe figures, because they can be very tricky to do. Soft, rubber 1/72 figures like these are even harder, because the material they're made out of can't hold paint all that well and tend to flake. So you have to prime and re-coat them with a lacquer cote or use future wax.

(I have even more in the to-do pile. You find yourself investing a little too much money in stashes of models)
(lol)

Anyways, like this forum, you have sub-communities. You know, here we have those who frankly love the PS1 to DS era and loathe Lords, and vice versa. There are those who care for neither but love the older games, or those dedicated to just the handhelds, or to Lament, CV64 etc.

In the scale model AFV/ jet fighter community, you have casual people like me who like building detailed models, but aren't sticklers for extreme detail or perfect historical accuracy. There are also those who won't even look at a model unless it's an absolute perfect replica of the vehicle it represents, and judge the final model's quality by how much aftermarket resin and photo-etch accurizing sets that's went into it. We call these people 'assholes', but they're out there.

In the nerd level thread I also posted some of my figure collections. I collect 1:6 (GI JOE-scale) troops from 21st-Century Toys and Dragon Models Limited. I was actually shocked to find out some of the stuff I've had for years is actually worth quite a bit of coin on Ebay whereas they weren't all that terribly expensive to buy back in '02 and '03, but I have no intention of parting with them.

Anyways, what are your all's hobbies? Are you part of any hobby community?

A hobby that I haven't done in a while is also model-building. The last one i did was the R.M.S. Titanic and before that the U.S.S. Enterprise-C...or it could've been the other way around. I can't remember.

I used to build wh40k models...was never very good, though. ;-;

Nowadays my hobbies, aside from prunyuu~ing, consist of playing vidyagaems and helping fansub anime. xD

I sew costumes and stuff for halloween or make coats (I make a coat or 2 a year for cold weather) I also try to do game design and programmin when I feel like it. Bein a programmer all day at works makes it hard to get excited to look at code when I get home

Hmm...besides the obligatory games/movies/CV collecting/comics/etc...

I like to lift weights. And I like to procrastinate lifting weights. More strength training than bodybuilding or anything, though.

I also love to watch mixed martial arts. UFC, old Pride fights, Bellator, you name it.

I also love metal. It's about all I listen to, and just about every metal sub-genre you can think of.

...I'm not a meathead, I swear!!

...and I'm not completely sure if anything I listed counts as a true hobby, or just an interest in something.  :-\

W-well, I do have a CF-18 in my stash of models. On the other hand, the kit is kind of complex to build so I've been putting it off. I have like a dozen of these in various unfinished states.  :-X

Well the CF-18 is nothing more then a repainted and renamed American F-18 which owes it's designs to the AVRO Arrow since both planes were designed by the same group of people (the US bought out all the A.V. RO scientists to build the next generation of American aircraft. A sad time in history). And interestingly enough the Arrow was 20 years ahead of it's time. So until around 1978 or '79 no military aircraft anywhere in the world could match the arrow's capabilities. It was and is still an amazing aircraft.

Not sure if you can define anything I do as hobbies, but I do obsess over movies and lately anime, and I used to obsess over music, and sometimes I get into obsessive gaming modes.

I kinda...don't do much else. Besides swimming and biking in the summer, but those are pastimes.

God Dammit Super Waffle! You actually have Hot Wheels versions of the DeLorean Time Machine as well as ECTO-1! I've been keeping my eyes out for those two as well as the KITT car from Knight Rider. So far the only thing in Hot Wheels that I've gotten were the regular DeLorean and the DeLorean 24 Karat gold edition of which only two cars were ever made (Note that I'm talking about the full-sized cars and not the Hot Wheels toy)

I never saw enough of viper to actually get into the series. The premise of the adaptable car is very interesting as well as it's little flying camera drone which looks identical to the Air-born Hunter Killers from 'The Terminator' (it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were the same model for it). But for me the KITT car was more attractive then the Viper car. Not just in terms of looks but also in it's abilities. All I've seen out of the Viper car (so far) is the ability to change it's shape to an extent and also it's color. The KITT car doesn't have those abilities however it has others; such as near-indestructible capability, 0 to 300 mph acceleration in less the 3 seconds, a laser cannon, a jet propelled boost jump, Traveling across water (though it was for only one episode unless you include the Knight Industries 4000), to name but a few.

I like to go running. Right now, I can go 4 miles in 32 minutes on average. I've never made it in less than 30 though, and that's my current goal. I try to go running between 2 and 3 times in each week. It feels really good, and I really enjoy it. Because of this, I'm in the best shape of my life up to this point, and that feels really cool to be able to say.

I also really love bicycling. It's really fun to get up close and personal with my town and explore in ways that I couldn't if I were in a motor vehicle or walking. It's something I do whenever I'm feeling adventurous.

Music. I play bass guitar. I enjoy playing and learning the songs that I like to listen to. I'm hoping to get a band together this summer. It'd be fun to gig, and I know I could handle it just fine at this point. I also sing. I'm practicing playing and singing at the same time lately. Could come in handy.

Video games, but that's kind of obvious.

I don't know if it counts, but reading. I'm currently really enjoying Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. A Study in Scarlet was fantastic. These stories definitely pass the test of time. They're still very interesting reads with a great writing style.

I love jogging. That feeling of overcoming your physical difficulty and going on is quite euphoric.  4 miles in 32 min is great! Last time I jogged I had around the same time (about 35 mins for 4 - 4.5 miles)

Sherlock Holmes is a personal favorite of mine. I believe I said it before. People today often consider him an old, pipe-smoking detective but those who actually read the books know that was far from the truth. Holmes was way ahead of his time, had very unusual habits, and was considered quite a wacko. Oh, did I mention he was also abusing drugs (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/etcbin/toccer-new2?id=DoySign.sgm&images=images/modeng&data=/texts/english/modeng/parsed&tag=public&part=1&division=div1)?

I hate running, ha ha. I remember doing the two-mile run in high school and it taking me like 20 minutes. 'Course, I wasn't in shape then and I haven't been since I was, oh, probably ten years old.

I oughta get back into running. Did it sportily as a kid, but then became a lazy fucker.

Nice! Recently, I gave a double-blood donation to American Red Cross, so I've been kind of sluggish over the past few days, but I got myself going yesterday and had a nice run anyway. I like to approach it as a challenge. When I see people around me doing better, I have the drive to work harder, figuring that at my age and fitness, I should have the potential to do that well too! Treating it like a game keeps it really interesting for me, though sometimes I run without timing myself just to have a stress-free, relaxing(sort of) run.

That's the story I'm on now, actually. I got the Sherlock Holmes Collection Vol. 1 & 2 on my Nook, and it's got ALL the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories in it.

Yeah, Sherlock Holmes demands constant mental stimulation, so he abuses drugs when he doesn't have a case. There's also the misconception that he's a private detective. He's actually "the world's only consulting detective". He doesn't run an official business of any kind.

Don't know if it's a hobby but I collect Fisher Price Great Adventures. I have since I was a kid. In fact I wrote a letter to Fisher Price and told them some ideas like Robin Hood. Next thing I knew a Robin Hood set was out. Not sure if it was me that caused it but still cool nonetheless.

For people unaware of what Great Adventures are here's a link http://greatadventures.coupleofbucks.net/ (http://greatadventures.coupleofbucks.net/) btw I have a few items he doesn't.

Btw Super Waffle I love Fushigi Yugi.
