Simply because it's easy to vote somebody down without giving a reason, leading them to not know what they're doing wrong and continue behaving in the way that got them voted down in the first place. If a user's doing something wrong, it should be addressed more clearly.

Lets start with you then, having posting a topic blasting the policies and features of a board you barely have 8 posts on. You're totally doing it wrong.

Of course now you've stirred up the hornet's nest. Have fun topping the negative Respect charts for a while.

I wanted to downvote him but he already has +1. It would have been different if he had none at all. It'd be like trying to have sex with a married Catholic girl -- it's just not as fun as you expected.

I remember someone here mentioning that if you're voted down/up you can look at it in a way that there are those who feel strongly about what you have to say from an objective stand point. Pretty simple. It doesn't always have to mean unmerited disapproval. It's a two way street. Notice no one ever questions a positive vote, even if it seems it wasn't warranted.

Also, it's not exactly facebook where your day to day life friends will give you a "like" simply for waking up in the morning and taking a piss.

There are a few out there that will troll on by and minus one person or another for kicks and the like. Personally it's best not to pay it any real mind or you'll get caught up in the nonsense. I don't pay much attention or any attention at all to the respect system anymore as it has no real relevance. You can't simply judge someone who has lots of respect points verses someone who doesn't really have any. It's not a clear-cut way to know the people here. The best way to know a person here is to chat with them. And as you might have guessed one of the bad apples has already made a comment to you about your thread
"Spirituality is God's gift to humanity...
Religion is Man's flawed interpretation of Spirituality given back to humanity..."

You're misunderstanding that it is a superfluous system with no real bearing as to 'what you're doing wrong'.

To elaborate:
1. "It's easy to vote someone down without a reason" - but it's just as easy to vote someone up without a reason (though usually the reasons for both of these are the agreeability of said post).
2. "leading them to not know what they're doing wrong" - if you are doing something really wrong, then you WILL be notified by a moderator or an administrator.  The "respect" system has nothing to do with what you're doing that may be breaking the rules of the forum (which I'm assuming you've read, and if you have, you would know what you're doing wrong and right)
(The rules thread can be found here)
3. IF you find your posts being downvoted, it's likely that you're just saying disagreeable things... though admittedly, there have been instances in which people's posts have been downvoted en masse.  Again, this has nothing to do with what you're doing right or wrong with regards to forum behavior that may get you warned/banned.

I hope this information helps you.

There are always the trolls that they like to play with their favorite button game, the minus and the rest of us that we simply don't bother to push that button or even give an answer for something that we don't find to our liking.

Plus we already know the system isn't perfect. If it was perfect, Gunlord would have like +1000 karma on account of being gunlord.

It works well enough. Sure, if you get downvoted (or upvoted) by yourself, that doesn't say much, but you'll probably have a good idea of why your posts elicited those reactions when other people respond to you in the thread, either by saying "you're wrong" or complimenting you on a good contribution.

+1 respect for hero-sama :D

I think calling it a "respect" system is misleading. lets call it what is more than anything: an agree/disagree system.
