I'd love to see a sequel where the heroes realize that as long as they oppose SkyNet militarily, they will never win, and instead pull a SkyNet and go back to actually CREATE SkyNet (or have a hand in its intellectual development) and prevent it from creating itself as a monster.

Genisys even says something similar itself, along the lines of "Can you blame me when your kind have sought to kill me or enslave me since before my first thought?"

Basically, they come to a sobering realization that they can only "win" by going back and being NICE to it, and being respectful to it as a living, self-determining entity.

And then BOOM.

All of the future is rewritten and Judgement Day is completely avoided.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

The greatest irony will probably be if and when JD is avoided by machines but still happens via humanity.
Humans created the machines to begin with so there's always this lingering thought that humanity was destined to try and eliminate itself with the machines being the method of destruction. The responsibility still weighs upon the humans.

Or, put another way: they convince SkyNet to give peace a chance, and it avoids Judgment Day by not pressing the kill button.

And then humanity blows itself up anyway.

And the heroes are all "Fuck. Did not see that coming."

in my own headcanon the terminator saga is just chronicling everything that eventually leads up to The Matrix

Haha! I noticed the Terminator/Matrix similarity myself when I first saw the film ;D
