Title: An alternate view on CoTM
Post by: KaZudra on March 04, 2014, 06:22:24 AM
With an open mind, I'm going to tell you a theory on CoTM, but first let's review some facts...

What if I told you that CoTM could have been a direct Sequel to SoTN, and would make a more interesting story if it were?
Morris Baldwin could have been Richter, they are both the same age and it would make more sense for him to be there.
Nathan and Hugh would be Richter's Sons, Hugh would be the eldest son.
Nathan and Hugh would share a Cain and Abel relationship over the fact that Nathan inherited the VK and Hugh didn't and other sibling rivalries

what are you guys' thoughts on this?

Hmm strange, you say Iga made non Belmont épisodes cannon because of the popularity of the game, but i read that Cotm was considered as non canon by Iga

Circle of the Moon was always seperate from the storyline of the other games. The common misconception is that the game was later removed from the timeline, but it was actually never part of the timeline in the first place.

This Offical Konami magazine (http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110421095506/castlevania/images/6/6e/Konamimagazinevolume20-page012.jpg) confirms this. In the upper black box, second sentence, it says something like: "This story takes place in a different timeline from the Belmont and Morris family."

Basically, you should see Circle of the Moon as its own seperate world. The Belmont family doesn't exist, only the Graves and the Baldwins. It features a different Dracula, a different Carmilla, etc.

When I first played CotM, I thought that Nathan was the son of Richter but the Belmont name had been changed out of shame or dark tampering as a result of SotN, possibly a lead up into the Morris era.

I always thought that Nathan Graves was descendant of Richter as well and that the Baldwin clan (not being a part of the Belmont clan) were close friends which is why Morris Baldwin raises up Nathan after his parents were killed. Considering how early people were marrying and having children back then, Richter would have been Nathan's grandfather. Richter and Annett would have had a daughter whom would later on, marry into the Graves family thus explaining Nathan's surname as Graves and not Belmont.

I like to think that CotM happens out of the worst ending to SotN, in that Richter dies and Alucard goes back to sleep. Since Richter is dead but Dracula is still alive, the Morrises and Baldwins take up the Vampire Killer, rename it the Hunter's Whip, and continue the fight.

Oddly enough, if you think about it, OoE could still exist in the same timeline as CotM, as the Belmonts are gone as well and it deals with the remnants of the clan.

A lot of these are pretty good ideas. Heck why aren't you guys writing the story for these games?

I wouldn't mind. Have Hugh as Maxim's grandson (making his rivalry with Nathan a generational thing) and it'd be even better.

Wish they'd also gone with the original "Schneider Belmont" name for Reinhardt, even if it wouldn't have fit into the post-SOTN no-Belmont era.

Which is why it made more sense to me that the PAL version was simply named 'Castlevania'

CoTM proved that you didn't necessarily need a Belmont and VK setup to make a terrific Castlevania game. That alone made it great.
So I don't think plastering a post-SoTN story onto it would do it much good. In a way, it belongs outside of the canon.

CotM was probably my favorite of the GB/GBA titles.

I think COTM was one of the most satisfying CV games to complete, speaking truthfully. I believe there are certain CV games which took a lot more skill to complete than others, particularly in the Metroidvania iterations. Even though I didn't love the sprites or the graphics and it wasn't the most atmospheric CV game, I think it was very well composed, well designed and introduced some interesting new elements into what was previously Classicvania (Twin Dragon Bosses, anyone?)

Also, its have a loooot of music from Classic CVs games, and a few originals, but really good ones (I love Fate to Despair :D).

I like the Castle composition, and how the different areas are conected. The dash boots are perfect for explore it.

One of the best boss fights in the game :D
