(https://i.imgur.com/o2odP8j.png) Castlevania : Simon's Destiny is a standalone non-profit GZDOOM based fan game born as a love letter to this legendary franchise. This mod aims to reinvent the very first NES title of the franchise with a nostalgic yet brand new first person gameplay. All the levels from the classic NES era game have been reimagined like never before, experience the tale of Simon's fight against Dracula and his army of the night! 1.4 Trailer
* Download Gzdoom (Version 3.7.2 or newer) at https://zdoom.org/downloads (https://zdoom.org/downloads) * Put Castlevania.ipk3 in the same folder of Gzdoom * Open Gzdoom and select "Castlevania: Simon's Destiny" in the game window (Make sure video settings below the selection box are set on "Hardware (OpenGL)") * Play!

* Standalone? So i don't need Doom2 to run it, right? Correct! Just grab Gzdoom, drop Castlevania.ipk3 in and you're ready to start your quest! * Thing X isn't working properly. Please report it in this thread: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=57800, (https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=57800,) it's the main development thread, i can help you, and if it's a bug, i'll fix it! * Is this supposed to be accurate to the NES Castlevania? It's not a 1:1 3D port of the original game, it's more of a reimagining of it. * Are you gonna make a 3D Symphony Of The Night? No, simply because that game is a masterpiece, it's perfectly crafted in every single possible way, and even getting remotely close to it would be a really hard task. * If SOTN is not an option, what about Simon's Quest, Dracula Curse, Bloodlines or Rondo Of Blood? If i had to work on a sequel, it would probably be Simon's Quest, but i have no plans for that at the moment * Can i use your mod as a base to make my own Castlevania mod? Can i make addons for your mods? Sure! You can do whatever you want with it, just put me in the credits! * I like your stuff, are you working on other mods? Yes! I'm working on Doom: The Golden Souls 2, a mix of oldschool games and Doom! Check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/goldensouls2/ (https://www.facebook.com/goldensouls2/)

Ouch! That's a sweet full-on 3D adaption if I ever saw one! Like CV 64/LoD except more fast-paced and done in first-person. Congratz :D

I know its DooM... but my only complaint would be that he moves too fast

I've tested slower player speeds but they didn't work very well with the kind of gameplay i was looking for, it's still slower than regular doom though

This looks amazing! The exploration posibilities it brings is something I have been wanting to see on a Castlevania(like) (fan)game for a while. Great work, and hope there is a release soon!

This is awesome! I can imagine Castlevania III Dracula's Curse re-done like that and you can explore all areas in the NES game ... but it will be glorious like a open-world FSP Castlevania.

New preview here! http://webm.land/media/TBGM.webm (http://webm.land/media/TBGM.webm)
One thing to note is that if you time your whipping right, you can destroy projectiles like in the official games (unlike in the video where i got hit multiple times by the bone pillar)

This turned out WAY better than I expected once I saw it was some kind of Doom mod. You seriously have a great grasp of the soul of the Doom and Doom-like games from that era. Right down to the use of sound effects and enemy placements. The graphics are also great and consistent to recreate that style, but with more features to add to the atmosphere. It has the right amount of bombast in the presentation and design that a Doom-like game needs.
This shit is getting streamed on my channel when it comes out.

Thank you very much!
I'm currently testing a Castlevania styled backjump when you get hit by enemies. I have to see if it translates well in 3D, still, considering you can quicksave in this game, it wouldn't be as annoying

My first thought is to say no, just because its hard to really know your position in first person, in relation to the backwards space behind you. SO when you get hit and fall back off a cliff that's a rage quit level moment. It may also break the 'spirit' of these old Doom clone types.
That said, it is certainly worth experimenting with and seeing how it really feels.

Yeah, as expected it didn't work out very well, still, it was worth a shot

There's not a whole lot more I can say that someone else hasn't said already, here or on the ZDoom forum topic of the same name, so I will just give out my best wishes and prayers in your endeavor.

I think everyone here who's played Castlevania knows just how trying that section of the game really is.

I think I lost more lives and life-points in that corridor than anywhere else in the game, and potentially everywhere else combined. :-S

I love it! If you make the action recoil when you get hit, do it like how they did it in Metroid Prime. You do get some knockback, but you essentially are still in the same position. It's minuscule.

I've ended up keeping the doom styled knockback, the recoil didn't work very well in 3d space

Intersting. Although the bridge never collapsed in the original. But author's licence, right? ;)
I'd be really interested, if after this project is finished, to see if it is possible to recreate Castlevania II in doom style. Although it might be a daunting task for sure. And probable resemble Elder scrolls Arena in some manor.

Post by: Batandy on October 10, 2017, 11:51:16 PM
I'm taking some liberties here and there since it's not a 1:1 remake, and the falling bridge adds some "spice" to the first section.
Yes, it would be possible to make a Castlevania II remake since you can add hub maps, npcs, dialogues and shops (The engine also supports Heretic, Hexen and Strife, so all these features are native with no coding required). I probably will not make it after i'm done with this (maybe next year?), but if i'd do it i'd take way more liberties to improve the original, with good puzzles, good npc dialogue, more enemies, new locations, changes to the story. The only hard thing would be doing the day-night system but i'm pretty sure it can be done since i've seen other people do it in their mods.

(https://i.imgur.com/ZU7AMmX.png) In the regular difficulty modes, only the Castlevania 1 enemies appear, but if you choose the Blood Moon difficulty, you can experience the game again with a new set of enemies taken from games such as Rondo Of Blood and Symphony Of The Night! That's a very selective response. It doesn't matter what your standards of "good" are or whether you dislike a specific game. People often dislike good games and like bad games, it's called an opinion. I accept opinions.
However to call a game 'shit' to everyone else when it's been reviewed by reputable reviewers and given an average score of around 70%+ is incredibly biased. It's not that you don't appreciate or like the game that I personally dislike, it's that lazy and inarticulate opinion of "Nah... It's shit" or reputable reviews "doesn't make it good". Saying you don't like the game is one thing, telling everyone else it's shit is a different story.
The games broke many a convention of their time and for 3d games in general, they were engaging and had more of a horror factor that the original CV games had than any other 2d/ 3d CV game of that Era, they nailed the music and atmosphere, presented a decent challenge factor and actually had good characters and character development (better than a lot of CV games) and despite the camera being funny the games for their time were still playable with, the gameplay which was most true to 2d lineage of classic Castlevania. You would be hard pressed to find another Castlevania game that achieved all of the above, albeit in 3d.
Being selective about responses is not assisting your opinion to look any more valuable to anyone reading this forum.
OP, if you can complete the whole game by Halloween, hats off to you.

You are way overthinkin this man. I think its shit... I dont need to back that up with anything. I played it when it was new and it was shit. I played it years later and it was shit. I played it a few years ago... guess what? Still shit. I dont care how it was reviewed. Im almost 40 years old and been playing games since the NES was released. Im more than capable of forming my own opinions about games.
I hated this one you may not. I dont really care! :) My fav CV game out of all of em is CV2 and most ppl hate it. I dont argue with ppl about it on the internet. I didnt mention it was it shit to try to derail this awesome games thread so lets leave it at that

It's understandable, though Simon's Destiny plays a lot slower than Doom, you could always try to play on the easy difficulty
-Completely reworked whip. It is now way easier to hit small targets, and anything in general. -Holy Water's flask now stuns enemies and deals +ripper damage before touching the ground. -Axe Armor's projectiles are now +RIPPER (They don't bounce back when they hit you). -Axe Armor's melee attack is weaker. -Reduced player bobbing. -Candles will now ALWAYS spawn hearts on New Moon and Crescent Moon. (They still have a chance not to drop anything on Full Moon). -Whip upgrades will not spawn anymore if you've already got a maxed out morning-star whip. (A big heart will drop instead). -Improved MAP01's courtyard. It's a bit overdue, but it's finally here! This will probably be my final release for this mod. Thank you all for your support!

Sweet! All those changes sound great and sound like they'll make the game feel a bit closer to that CV feel.
