I enjoy using reaction images. Sometimes I do it to be funny. Sometimes I do it to troll. But most of the time? I pick a reaction image meme I feel is appropriate to the situation.

They get more across for me than a simple smiley or emoticon, and they have potential to be far wittier.

But, not everyone agrees, and my experiences on web forums has shown me that even on individual forums, the divide between those who use them and hate them can still be rather striking.

To those who use them, why do you use them?

To those who hate, WHY THE HATE BRO?
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

I love them, because they are so universal, that sometimes you must to emphatize your opinion with a image you surely would recognize as it's trying to tell you something more deeply than a sentence.

Also, they are very funny :P

Reason #1. Also because people have an easier time getting the references behind them.
It is precisely because it never cared, that people do care.  It's something which it's lacking, because that which it has, it has lackluster of.

Then Lords of Shadow 2 just takes a big, semi-solid, smelly, pea-green dump all over everything.
