Duration: From now until March 31st
Deadline for submissions: March 28th (11:59 PM PST)
Judgement: by forum poll from March 28th to March 31st at midnight and Winners announced when the votes are all in.
Theme: Forest Month
Rules:
- remix one Castlevania track played during a forest stage (or in a similar vegetal environment)
- no genre restriction, no length restriction
- only ONE track should be remixed, meaning no medleys/mash-ups/etc.
A few suggestions to get a better idea: Forest of Monsters (SC4), Forest of Jigramunt (CoD), Maze Garden (C64), Platinum Moonlight (DoS), The Hidden Curse (PoR), Emerald Mist (OoE), Hunting Path (LoS), etc.
Prizes: Award medals for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

I actually, figured out how to compose a track together since last month by following everyone's tutorials however, it's pretty tough for me in the area of reading music!
If I could find a program to convert a mp3 to actual sheet music or tabs that would help me out tremendously.

What you need are MIDI files -- there's no software that can convert mp3 files into MIDI/sheet music. See the sticky thread I posted on the Contest Board for MIDI tracks. And D9's DAW tutorial. :)

I'd like to withdraw from the mad forest entry i originally posted, i'm using a remix in my game as well and wanted to do something different, so for the next few days i'll be working on forest of jigramunt from CoD ;D
EDIT: Actually, why not have both as 2 entries? :) i'll work on my new track and fine tune the mad forest mix as a secondary entry if none are opposed...

Interesting. It actually makes me think of perhaps a dungeon instead of a forest setting due to what seems like a lack of wind instruments.

When the vocals kicked in I expected them to stay in one way or another from that point on since they came in so strong. It felt odd to me that they just vanished very shortly.
Also, it felt like the 'lead' was being passed around a lot, perhaps too much for the song to keep it's identity. It could be that it isn't so much that the lead is getting handed off to different instruments but that the instrument's sounds don't flow with each other, being a big departure when it is passed. Note: I am including the voice in the list of leads, since because it is so strong it steals the spotlight when it pops up.
I'm sure someone with a musical vocabulary could explain this better, but I hope it helps.

So would it be more pragmatic to work the vocals in as more of a lead, or omit them?

I thought the vocals were really interesting. It made the piece stand out. I'd personally try to get them working as a more prominent part of the piece. It will admittedly be hard to pull off though.

This is very nice, quite conservative, but the instrument choice was interesting. Try to put a little reverb on those vocals and they'll fit a lot more ;)

Drac9 - sorry dude, but in the middle of my forest track entry meltdown i wanted to do emerald mist as well ;D to me, it was a shoe in for my style since i blend the symphony with metal, just seemed like a heavier choice. But i'll be doing AT LEAST one more track as well. Hope you all enjoy! 8)

Hahaha, i already have Forest of Monsters, its in my CV Chronicles thread, but i wanted to make some all new tracks for the competition, it wouldn't feel right to me if i recycled my tunes that were already done lol, plus it gives me new possible mixes to use for my game as well lmao Thanks dude! 8)

Working on entry 3 ;D while forest of jigramunt would sound great, im not feelin' the metal lol, so im going with hidden curse from PoR. Ive just wrapped up the symphony, so for the evening i'll be working on the drums. If I get the time tomorrow ill be doing the rest and ill post as soon as its ready :)

I havent looked into it or even looked beyond my Magnus choir plugin, but what did you use to make those? Id really like to find some vocal plugins that I could use to make sounds like what you hear in most of todays medieval/mythological games. I think they could bring a whole new depth to some of the darker sounds I can get out of my symphony setup.

They're PSF rips of Devil May Cry 1's Divinity Statue song. Considering the rule against medley-mixing I had to really change up the "order" of the vocals, as compared to the original.

Hey folks, sorry for the delay. Had a crazy weekend and auditioned a new bassist so now my band will be back up and running VERY soon ;D anyways just a quick update; symphony and drums are done on my final entry, all thats left is the bass and guitars so ill be starting those in the next few minutes and ill post the track as soon as its done 8)

Thanks dude ;D i actually experimented a bit without compression for once lol, i tried a limiter instead because it was sounding like it was squashing my drums a bit. Could be because i went back to my 5150 on the guitar for that track lol. Thanks again 8)

Honestly, I didnt make a track for this compo because I have had the worlds worst streak of musical writers block. Even arranging tunes. Ill make something, sit back and hate it. I guess every musician hits that stage at some point or another.

JUST got home from a LOOOONG assed day of work :rollseyes: anyways, i thought about this awhile back and noticed that more often than not that most people tend to forget about some of the hidden gems that are the OST's on the Gameboy titles, so for April, i say we go with "Gameboy-vania Month".

There truly are some fantastic tracks for these games and more often than not everyone seems to overlook them (myself included at times lol). Lets get this one rollin' and show some of the ol'school love for these, back in the day where we would scramble for a power adapter when our Gameboy's would be on the verge of dying to keep from losing all our hard work haha 8)
