so epic! and they should bring it to consoles with all the characters! it would be easier to adapt than what Blizzard went through to make Diablo III playable on console.

well yea sure the level design is simple but it has more epic replay value than all the previous Contra games. console version could add local co-op and more features!

Some characters I recognize, but there's others I've never heard of before. They either must be from other titles that came out after Hard corps: Uprising or they were invented for this title.
-
Nah, this so-called ”Contra” is actually garbage. The gameplay is a far cry from the greatest in the series. You’re not missing out, don’t worry Affinity ;D
-
Yeah, I tried it myself when it first came out. Not a fan at all. Hard Corps will still always be #1.
-
The one official and modern Contra game that never was recognized as such due to poor marketing / naming was Hard Corps : Uprising. It actually shows not only everything a good modern Contra should be, but also in a respect , Castlevania, especially for Level 3.
Why they hell didn't they just call it "Contra" so people knew what the hell it was, bought the game, and then could show that 2.0 and 2.5 D are still viable in todays world?
Stupid Konami.
-
Maybe Hard Corps: Uprising wasn't called Contra because it is more of a standalone alternate universe entry as it's backstory interferes with what was established in Contra: Shattered Soldier.

This... makes me really appreciate Contra 4.

Well, using that logic, there never sound have been a second to fifteenth Final Fantasy, given the lack of relationship between pretty much all of the titles.
In general, quite a lot of series have little or no continuity between stories when it comes to sequels. Valkyria Chronicles, Xenoblade, etc. But they all retain their titular namesake to at least give people a general idea what to expect, and let them know that at least some elements of what fans have come to expect will be present in some form or other.
It was quite honestly a fluke that I found Hard Corps : Uprising and discovered what it really was....
-
There's no way this is Contra, this looks like something completely different with a remix of the first Contra games 1st stage playing in the background. Sorry, I'll pass.

Looking at the topic title and remembering other threads created by affinity, I would be genuinely interested in seeing what her top 25 favorite video games ever would look like. There has been some very....unusual opinions coming from her in the past. And I’m all for that! Democrazy and freedom of speech! Yay!
Just curious cause it’s all very entertaining and unpredictable :D

Context is important. When most of the titles in a series do have continuity, there is nothing wrong with singling out a divergent story in this way. I applaud them for letting Hard Corps: Uprising stand on its own merits.
Also, Xenoblade has continuity.
-
This entry (if it is an entry) seems quite divergent.
Hence my statement about liking Contra 4, which actually feels like a Contra title and includes a lot of goodies for newcomers and old fans, etc.
This entry is... a thing.

Yeah, it's really hard for me to rank Contra 1, 2, 3, and Uprising. Each has their place for me. When you try to quantify them, well , nothing would be there without the original, 2 was also a nice improvement, 3 was groundbreaking for the series, and Uprising brought it to further perfection...They all have their unique place in history as well as being my favs--all I know is that Uprising is right up there with the best of them, no question about it.

I always have a hard time attributing any "favorite" game in a series to the Genesis. That system always seemed to lag behind both in graphical and sound capabilities. Granted, I think the inferiority of the hardware , compared to the SNES for instance, forced Sega devs to innovate with better ideas for games compared to Nintendo devs, I rarely have any favs from the Genesis.
The only exceptions I can really think of are Streets of Rage--graphically not as sharp, but made really good use of the soundset of the system, I play that far more than I do Final Fight. I still like Quackshot for some weird reason, too. Tazmania was also better than it's SNES counterpart, too.
I generally preferred the TG16 or even original Master System in their own time periods. But that's just me.
Gameboy Contra was cool, too.
Still , gotta lament the death of the series, no matter what the fav is...

I WANT TO PLAY AS THE BEAR. Irrelevant as most everyone in that lineup is, they look RADASS!!!
Contra: Hard Corps for the win, Hard Crud: Downflushing, Contra in subtitle-as-title only; might've been best disassociating itself from the Big C to just be its own thing, like how that Bloodstained game can be regarded as the latest entry in a genre CastleVania III established: fighting through scary places with teammates you can switch into on the fly.

*high five*
It was the last of the "good" Contras that I played, but probably my favorite. I may have to replay Contra 4 just to be sure, heh.
-
Give Contra 4 a shot. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nine stages over Contra 3's six (not sure why it was so short.) Plus it has a s**t tone of unlockables. It was the perfect way to calibrate Contra's anniversary with a bang.
-
I love Contra 4. Beat it on Hard Mode (came down to an absolute miracle on my last life of my last continue, lol), I just meant that although Hard Corps is my favorite, 4 makes it a tough choice.
I remember how tense it was on Hard Mode, because in a lot of spots, if you die and lose your weapon, you're absolutely screwed. And dodging between the projectiles on the waterfall boss...yikes.
-
Yeah, sorry. I didn't quite see the 're'play part, lol.
-
CONTRA FOUUUUUUUUR!
But I do love The Alien Wars on the SNES.
And Shattered Soldier I really liked, too.
-
Shattered Soldier usually gets no love. I think it's a solid game. So many hours spent perfecting the first 5 stages...could never get a perfect playthrough to unlock the secret "ending", though. The last 2 boss fights were super tough.
Alien Wars is the bane of my Contra experience, heh. Always wanted to get to the "true" final boss on hard, but that damn boss on the second overhead stage always takes most of my lives. :'(

I still use game genie to finish CIII on hard mode. What i noticed also helps is using an ASCII turbo pad. I switch the X button (my second gun) to auto-fire and voilà! It looks like i'm using only one gun but I'm actually firing two at the same time. This makes any weapon twice as strong (so long as both guns have the same weapon equipped. It actually brings the Spread guns strength up to where it's supposed to be, like it was in the previous games.
Shattered Soldier was also an awesome game. I had given up hope after the two misfires that were Contra: Legacy of War and The Contra Adventure. I guess Appaloosa had an obsession with Contra: Hard Corps that they completely forgot about Bill and Lance entirely. My only nit-pic about shattered soldier was the over-usage of mini-boss fights they crammed into the game. And that there was no spread gun!! Sacrilege.
-
Contra 4 and Contra Evolution were great. WTF is this? Soooo, are we just making characters up as we go now? This divergent "Contra" concept could have actually worked, but I am sooo done with these types of games, can we just get true epic 2D Contra Sequels??

Dude, Asciipad Turbo was seriously the best controller for the SNES. I don't often find that I like 3rd party controllers, but that one was the sweetest ever.

I know that the frequent boss battles were a big issue with lots of people when it came to Shattered Soldier and even Hard Corps. But I honestly loved it. :-X Probably why I liked Furi so much too, lol

I will cherish my ASCII-Pad for my SNES until it dies. And then I will pay money for its repairs.
Love the Turbo and Auto-Fire Switches. Saved my thumbs from dying back in the day.
