Title: #Igavania: What Metroidvania should we play?
Post by: Captain Sheepy on May 18, 2015, 07:20:26 PM
Hey guys, Neobelmont and I are going to do a Twitch Live Stream on a Metroidvania of your choosing from this poll. So please make sure to vote and then be there at the twitch live stream when we update you guys on if there were be one at all. I think it's something we should all have fun together with and hang out as a community over this #Igavania awesomeness.

I get the feeling that Aria of Sorrow is going to get the most votes since out of the choices its definitely the most beloved, but I chose Circle of the Moon since its the most challenging metroidvania to date and also because it had the best atmosphere.

I voted for Aria myself :o

I'd go with Aria. Circle would probably be my second choice. Symphony is done far too often, IMO.

Suffer? Suffer in a good way right ^u^? I enjoy the game, and since I can use the disc itself in my computer, I can turbo the speed to make the long hallway segments really short. It's much more fun that way , yeah...I suffered while playing on the ps2, but no more. I wanted to vote curse too but I clicked Dissonance and wished I could curse myself to the darkness.

yes promoting positivity is never ever a bad thing. And you're not the only one that wanted to have fun with the others weve talked about this for abit.  :) anyways my vote is going to.....

I would have no problem tackling circle(and sheepy probably) and it's been a long time since I played it.  :)

I chose HoD but CotM is good too. Let's see something else besides AoS or SotN

I chose Circle of the Moon. While it's not an Igavania, it is perhaps one of the most successful handheld Metroivanias to date. This title should get an online playthrough.

I voted HoD cause it's the only game I never watched a playthrough of. I did beat it multiple times myself but I'd enjoy watching someone else tackle its somewhat confusing layout  :)

Now if only I can figure out the clipping and speedrunning tricks to get straight to the boss in less than 20 minutes (and with maxim, less than a minute lol)

No, you play it vanilla. You play it vanilla like the good lord intended.

(actually, Curse is my guilty pleasure. So much unrealized potential in that game, but damn if I still don't love blazing through all those hordes of enemies).

I love the knuckles in that game as well as the little air combos, jump cancels, and the bits of fighting game mechanics that appear...and of course, can't forget that Innocent Devil system.

I never understood how that worked.

And I have no problem admitting that I am not the best at curse with Hector. I rushed through the game just to play as Trevor  :P

The steal system could have been much better then what was given to us. You have to wait for the right time to steal an item, get the enemy to function in a specific way to steal an item, or hit the enemy several times (or in such a way) in order to steal from them. A waste of time and sometimes very frustrating. Especially when there are multiple enemies on-screen and you need to steal but everything else is getting in your way. It was needlessly complex when it should have been straight-forward simple. Plus there are enemies that you encounter before getting the steal ability that never show up again so you can't steal from them. Specifically the boss of the Abandoned Castle. You never see him after defeating him and you can't steal from him unless you go through boss rush after the fact, and then what's the point? You've already finished the game. It was a poorly implemented design choice IMO. Also it would have been more beneficial if Julia's shop sold some of those extremely rare elements in order to forge new stuff. Her shop was pretty bare bones to begin with. Renaldo's shop had much better shit.

Circle of the Moon. It might not be IGA-penned, but it's still one of the best entries in the genre, and deserves so much more recognition than it seems to have gotten.

In SotN you need to beat the game once to buy the duplicator, It is hard to get glyphs in OoE when enemies are nearby and some weapons in DoS can't be bought, you will need to grind for souls and sometimes even beat the game more than once AFAIK (I've never got all of them so IDK).

Even so I don't think that they are a "waste of time". They are optional and add to the game, even more as a replay value if you want to get everything. Its one of these things that are hard to do but give a feeling of accomplishment when you steal from a boss. :P

Sweet guys! Keep em coming! This poll has become very exciting. The chances of Curse of Darkness, Harmony of Dissonance, and Circle of the Moon winning are intriguing. I can't wait to see the outcome.

@Lelygax

I was talking about the steal system in Curse of Darkness, considering it is the only CV game where you can steal items  ;)  Every other game the defeated enemies just drop the items after you kill them.
Title: Re: #Igavania: What Metroidvania should we play?
Post by: Lelygax on May 21, 2015, 11:57:30 PM
Even so my point still stands, you know that I was comparing it and that these comparisons are valid ;)
If you read more carefully you will see that I wasn't only talking about items, but similar things that you can only get by using the "gimmick" of the game.

I'm not sure what point you were trying to make. I was talking about the CoD steal system yet you mentioned all this which had nothing to do with my comment;

And my comment came from this that you mentioned previously;

plus the steal system.

As for this;

It would have made more sense to mention this along with the 'steal system' comment above. That way there would have been no error. It should have been mentioned that you were talking about gimmicks on a whole and not about a specific system which is where the message got lost in translation.

People are perhaps voting for HoD over, say, SotN and AoS here because we see people doing SotN playthroughs quite frequently (and at least three of the Bloodstained Kickstarter Youtube affiliates are doing AoS runs so there's no shortage of those), but some of the other titles like CotM and HoD are more neglected in that regard. Maybe the voters here are looking for more variation in which games people are showing off playthroughs of right now.

ah, looks like I better expect that around....an hour from now XD lol. Unless you want to contact sooner.

And that's great that they are looking for more variation. Honestly, I realllly wanted to do the DS titles like portrait of ruin since I just beat that one so that's the most fresh castle in my mind right now. But the problem with that is...we'd kinda have to use the forbidden fruit. The price range for a capture card and capture kit is way to expensive and it's even worse for 3ds going into the 600$ range. I do own the games though and I wish there were some technology to just rip the game off to my computer.

However...that's not even the problem which is the funny part. The problem is capturing in the first place...or at least for Order of Ecclesia from what I've heard around the net is that it's a bit....frame-droppy, though that depends on how it is set up and what is used to capture the game. Even SGDQ have problems capturing the game directly from the DS, The audio would just not work a lot of the time.
Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow do work better though if my research was correct, but yeah...that's kinda the only way price range wise.

I would add the choices, but it's up to you guys since I don't approve of that stuff naturally unless you get everything from your own hardware like with pcsx2, the easiest to set up where you can get everything from your ps2 and USE the discs. It's actually legal to use it which is how I'd have to stream Curse of Darkness because Elgato literally has problems with that game! It CANNOT run the audio or video correctly. But put the disc in my computer and it works like magic. There are some cases in which some games just can't be captured through Elgato game capture...Modern games for ps3, SURE THING...older stuff...heh...it's anyone's guess for that thanks to converters messing up codec and etc.

HoD and CotM are really close contenders I've noticed! I find that HoD is a rather mellow game to play through, and you don't need to try so hard at it. While CotM on the other hand keeps me on my toes or else I can get picked off easily when I'm not paying attention  :P

yeah, I may let Belmont do more CotM if it does win. He has better pattern recgonition and strategy then I do....But he might get stale at points since SOMEONE likes to not appreciate the gifts given in either game =o= "Mr. Classic..." When I play, I'll make sure to use that DSS and spellbook.

Alright. So it's about 4 days to our supposed stream date on the 3rd of June right after I finish my final.

The results have come to a staggering prediction and decision that we will be indeed playing both Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance!

It's gonna be really crazy guys, Neobelmont who's mega pro at these games might just be the one playing the majority of the game while I entertain you guys like how I do on Youtube and etc...and with my voice acting too probably XD lol.

Otherwise, Hype hype hype for probably the most lore rich...or maybe educationally rich...or just plain awesome stream of your lives. Okay...well, we don't know how it will turn out, but you guys better expect a lot of me asking you guys questions, trying to answer your questions, and viewer interaction!

If we are going to come together as a community and all have fun together, then hear me now dungeon peoples! Don't sit back quietly, let us hear your comments (read actually) in the chat! Participate in whatever questions or trivia we may present. Let us share the loves and have fun together as a community! >u<
