Title: February 2017 Castlevania Dungeon MUSIC Contest

Deadline for submissions: February 28th (11:59 PM PST)
Judgement: by forum poll from March 1st to March 5th at midnight and Winners announced when the votes are all in. + we have a judge: Bloo

Theme: Make a title or menu theme worthy of Castlevania

Rules:
Anything goes! (minus collabs)
Short tracks are OK

Prizes: Award medals for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

Guidelines for Participants:
- no deadline extensions
- post your entries as links on this thread
- contestants may update their entries freely before the submission deadline.
- you may withdraw any entry at any time before the judgement begins.
- the winner chooses next month's theme (if he/she declines, the forum members shall decide on the theme)

Would it be acceptable to include a short intro? (As in, the intro before the title screen)
Or do you just want the menu theme?

I'm kinda confused now, it's "arrange a theme to make it sound like a menu/screen one" or "compose an original piece that servers for the same purpose"?

I was thinking more along the lines of take a theme from a menu or title screen of any CV and do your thing with it

I would say anything would be open game from any title, menu theme etc.

I understand this as making main title functioning menu music.

All I have is one vote, but here is what I'll be listening for.

*A melody (hook) that sticks with you long after you hear it.

*A song that sets a mood for the hypothetical game.

*People stay in menus. I'll be listening for a nice seamless loop.

*A strong direction, and a straightforward arrangement that introduces the theme melody quickly, but tastefully.

*Original melodies (not a requirement I believe). Just saying that because that's what I want to vote for.

I'm pretty obsessed with themes and little melodies that linger in your head. I'm excited to hear what you guys come up with. I'd be participating if I weren't needing every spare second to finish my work. But it will be fun to listen and vote!

Also, maybe we should PM our entries to Shiroi instead of posting them here? And maybe limiting to one "main" entry (one people can vote for) and keep other ones as "bonus"?

Beautiful tracks guys!

Aenslands track had very nice transitions. Great job!

Chernabouges captured the feeling of taking on the unknown. It mixed fear and wonder which I think are important emotions to evoke for the onset of a dark and dangerous quest.

I can already tell this is going to be a great contest.

I've tried doing this like 10 times and realized that it's probably out of my skill range (I started composing about 6 months ago, but only started arranging a month ago.) Are judging spots still open?

Thanks for your review Belmontoya!

I'm not really good when it comes to create atmospheres, but I do like to incorporate story telling into the music.

Also, my boy Chernabogue did it again, this will be a tough one

Great work guys!

My vote went to Chernabogue this time!

Without going into detail, my reason is that his melody lingered in my memory the longest.

I wish I had more time to write about the songs because they were all great. I might come back here and write about them in a few weeks.

Sorry if my criticisms seem harsh. Just keep in mind that none of the songs I heard were bad.

*2nd Place: aensland's My dearest - This one was really hard to tap my foot to. A lot of the sounds kind of blends together, which sounds kinda clustered. I really liked the melody though, and with some volumes / instrument tweaking I think this peice could be even better.

*Chernabogue's Abandon Yourself - Apologies, but this just sounds really generic. The melody isn't very catchy, and the instrumentation isn't anything unique. Not anything bad, but not a song I'd intentionally listen to if it were on a game soundtrack.

*3rd Place: BMC_War Machine's Dust to Dust - This sounds most fitting for an ending/credits roll. The song not starting until about 40 seconds in was a little odd too. The guitar and violin just feel too intense for a menu theme imo.

*1st Place: Dracula9's Iniquity's Raiment - This really reminds me of Final Fantasy VI. The melody was catchy without being too repetitive. The buildup and drop is perfect, and never gets too intense. The backgrounds noises sound a little cluttered in a few places, but keep a good balance throughout most of the peice. The sounds used for percussion are perfect. 10/10, would pause more than often.



Thank you to all who participated! I enjoyed listening to these quite a bit. This one was definitely very close, and was difficult to judge.

The clustered sound, yes yes, it must be organ, too wide for its own good
