Title: I do art... and now chiptunes too????
Post by: BLOOD MONKEY on October 24, 2014, 04:08:18 PM
Here is a thread where I'll post my artwork. C&C welcome and encouraged.

Nothing wrong with the old art  :)  I myself sometimes go back to my original works and it kinda gives me perspective on where I've been. Mega Man X is looking a little worse for wear.

That's not bad at all! Remember to just keep doing it and it'll get even better. It's all about practice and improving your technique  :D

Awesome! Keep going  ;)

Eventually you'll get it. The bane in my art for the longest time was hands. They would always end up being too small. On small/distant characters it wasn't so bad. But if I was doing a close-up then the tiny hands were really noticeable  :P

You're feet on this image don't look as bad as I have seen in other works. Trust me on that. The left foot is really good and though I can see the issue with the forward right foot, it isn't all that bad. One of the things I do before inking and colouring is examine my pics; seeing what could use improvement and what needs a downright fixer-upper. My brother uses the mirror technique for doing his images. Supposedly seeing the image in the mirror will help you pin-point the errors in your work and allow you to make better decisions/judgements on corrections. Give it a shot if you find yourself struggling with something you can't put your finger on  :)

Not bad either. The mid-section (the pelvic area) does need some corrections/fine tuning though. If you're having trouble with certain action-based posses then you can always try to find similar poses on the net (photos of people or other images) and see if helps you. But do keep going  ;)

I prefer the hair in the initial sketch.
It would also be cool to add to buster particle effects like he’s charging

Are you going to add colour depth for the armour, face, eyes, and the blue crystal glowy bits?

I'm gonna do full comic book style shading for it

Looks good Bloo.

i've made the hair bigger and fluffier again in the recent drafts
and i've been making a 3d effect to go over the buster similar to what's seen in megaman zx when charging

That's an interesting tactic for pixel art. The steps you took looks very much in line (no pun intended) with how a standard image is sketched and finalised.

I suppose it's an artistic license but Link never did use the Master sword in Zelda II. Still is a lovely image though! :D

And YES!, Trevor is actually wearing armour like his box art in CVIII! I don't see why they didn't do that for his character in SotN.

All in all, these are some juicy works of pixel art  :)

The cloud paintings look good! It's nice to see artists go out of their element in order to expand their horizons. What's even more interesting is if I squint my eyes the image becomes blurry and it look like a real-life photograph. Give it a shot if you want  ;)

The 'work in progress' image is also eye-catching. If I didn't know any better it seems like a cover piece for a metal band album.

O.O I don't think I'm personally capable of sustaining myself off my art if you're implying that, but I'm working on making it commercially viable. My entire living space is kinda like a studio tho, I'm pretty disorganized.

Unfortunately life got pretty turbulent and I haven't painted in a minute, but I went on a trip to Colorado recently and now have lots of fresh inspiration for landscapes. Haven't done any yet. but soon.

All I have this time is some admittedly very quickly finished Richter artwork to commemorate the 35th anniversary.

Worry not. I would never advise that. Though I personally wish it was a guarantee that an artist (of any level below the professional level) could make government-based wages off of their work. Only the most infamous, influential and well known get that kinda money. Kinda unfortunate that it's like that  :P

lol! I wouldn't worry about that either. Most artists probably have that same issue with their studios. It seems to be an artist thing if you think about it...

New post time!

It's been like half a year? :O My life has changed a lot since then and I haven't exactly had the time for much art, but I really feel like the little art I have done is really starting to define and refine my artstyle. I've also slightly rebranded my image. I worked a job where I used the name Bloo as an alias (I picked it because it was an easy choice) and it made me get real sick of the name. I'm Blood Monkey now. hehe.

Be warned, large images and tiny words attached to them up ahead.

First up, a small series of images depicting a part of the story of VOX;

THE MAW burst open in 2001, rending the surface of the south pole and shaking the world with it.
Long thought to be a myth, THE MAW is said to be the home of a demon older than the world.
It took expedition teams 25 years to reach the innermost layer of the speleothem forest. This is what they saw.

Next, some watercolor and ink art of a couple of the characters.

And most recently, I've started my Simon Belmont sprite sheet from scratch, again. While I've wanted to just get it over with and done for quite some time now, it's been too long since the last animations were made for it and I can see too many flaws now. I took too many shortcuts and the animation was sloppy as hell. No more fucking around. I'm redrawing every frame even if it's a slight arm movement! Mostly getting good results by tracing over Richter's animation set and adjusting for size / proportion. Might work on original moves once the full set is done, might not. The whole plan is to do a couple of complete tilesets / backgrounds and have a massive portfolio project to show for it.

Last but absolutely not least, I have a rather lewd drawing I made of my fiance. It's not directly explicit (I've seen more explicit art of the succubus posted here without problem) but it's still a lot, so be warned.

Lastly for the art, I've got my first original character concept for quite some time. I'm hoping to make a short original game, like a 2 or 3 level boss-rush boomer shooter focused on this gal.

In other news, I'm learning how to chiptune! I started off with a few songs from Sonic 1, since they're pretty simple loops underneath a minute long. Restricting myself to the original NES sound chip for now, you know what they say about limitations and creativity. Also don't wanna overwhelm myself yet lol.
