I'm not a huge fan of metal.  I used to be, but I guess I grew out of most of it.  Also, I classify the Megadeth below as a guilty pleasure, nothing more.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force
The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath
Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Metallica - ...and Justice for All
Metallica - Master of Puppets

Sure, Dethklok counts, as long as you're not one of those asshats who thinks that they're/he's better than the bands they/he imitates and pays homage to. Seriously, I can't even count the amount of indie dweebs who have said that. Somehow the (poorly mixed) Dethklok CD became a smash hit amongst people who don't even like metal, and then they go and make comments like that without ever even having HEARD the bands within the death metal genre. Farkin' stupid. I guarantee that if somebody likes Dethklok, they'll like death metal.

The Dethalbum is all right, but man am I depressed about how boring Gene Hoglan's drumming is. That guy is a god among metal drummers, and you wouldn't think that if that album is the only one you've heard with him drumming.

Metal albums you say? I'm not too much into death metal, but here's my general metal list between the subgenres in no particular order except the timing they come to my mind:

1. Walls of Jericho by Helloween
2. Sad Wings of Destiny by Judas Priest
3. Defenders of the Faith by Judas Priest
4. Angel of Retribution by Judas Priest(yeah, I'm a huge Priest fan)
5. Painkiller by Judas Priest
6. Burnt Offerings by Iced Earth
7. Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God
8. The Time of the Oath by Helloween
9. Killing is my Business... ...And Business is Good! by Megadeth
10. The System Has Failed by Megadeth
11. Something Wicked This Way Comes by Iced Earth
12. Slave To The Grind by Skid Row
13. Angel Down by Sebastian Bach
14. War of Words by Fight
15. Crucible by Halford
16. Hellbassbeaters by Markus Grosskopf's Bassinvaders
17. Once by Nightwish
18. New Religeon by Primal Fear
19. Trilogy by Yngwie Malmstein
20. The Scarecrow by Tobias Sammet's Avantasia

How can there be a thread about metal and no mention of Maiden?  One of my favorite albums is

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

Seriously, I can't get tired of that first album.

As awesome as Maiden is, I never really spent enough time with any one of their albums to decide if I'd consider it a top-favorite, ha. There's a lot of stuff I haven't gotten around to hearing.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that any of their albums are my all time favorites, but the one that definitely comes closest is Powerslave. That's a pretty good album.

Actually, I really oughta give Maiden more of a listen sometime soon. I love the albums of theirs I've heard--Powerslave, The Number of the Beast, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Brave New World--but just never got too familiar with them. But damn do they know how to write high-energy songs, and Harris is such a ridiculously good bassist. Also dig Dickinson's vocals and the fact that he reaches such high notes without going falsetto. Major props for that.

I'll post more later, but in no specific order...
Images and Words - Dream Theatre
Heartwork - Carcass
Leviathan - Mastadon
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Kill 'Em All - Metallica
Rust in Peace - Megadeth
New Order - Testament
Black Water Park - Opeth
The Jester Race- In Flames (I hear their later stuff ain't that great, but I really like this album).

I'm still kinda a newb with Metal, but I'll use your other favorites posted as recommendations.

Fuckin' right you will! You'll likely enjoy Swansong since you like Heartwork. It goes a bit more in a hard rock direction, sort of hard rock meets death metal--I've heard it called "death 'n' roll." The first song makes me imagine the band members wearing gigantic cowboy hats.

Then, if you like that, there's always the album Barbed Wire Soul by Blackstar, a.k.a. Blackstar Rising. Continues that sound but is even more hard rock. Same lineup as Swansong too, though excluding the ever amazing Bill Steer.

And since you like Heartwork, it's GUARANTEED you'll enjoy Arsis' A Celebration of Guilt.
