The 13th Doctor has been announced...

... The new, 13th incarnation of Doctor Who has been announced, and is a woman!  Woohoo!  13 is being played by Broadchurch's Jodie Whittaker.  It's such a shame that Michelle Gomez's 'Missy' is departing, as I could see so much fun between these two, as Missy's winding up of the Doctor can be brutal.  Missy's great.  I just hope that they don't go for any forced romantic subplots involving the Doctor.  Rose on her own was more than enough.... I really didn't like Rose.

So they've decided to go with a 13th Doctor now? Originally it was only 12 Doctors which was the maximum incarnation, unless certain instances are involved to warrant a new incarnation, which is probably what they're going with now. That, and the show is extremely popular.

Originally they'd had even fewer than 12, I believe.  But yeah, a couple of seasons or so ago back when Matt Smith was still the Doctor, they fudged it so that effectively the Doctor is a bit special and has an infinite number of regenerations, I think because he's possibly a bit special compared to most Time Lords.  I'm sad that Peter Capaldi and Michelle Gomez are leaving, but tbh the writing's been pretty bad for a while now, so Capaldi's not really been as good as he could have been.  I'm sad that Gomez is leaving as she makes a wonderful 'Missy', and I bet that she'd be an absolute hoot opposite 13.

No, they just "recharged" him so he had a new cycle of 12 more regenerations.
Kind of a soft-reboot that keeps continuity going, but beginning a new lifetime for the Doctor.

I'm stoked at this casting, btw. She's wonderful in Broadchurch.

Here's hoping she meets the Tenth Doctor and squeezes an in-joke in there somewhere.

I want to say something about pandering to SJW's, but even they aren't happy with it because it doesnt go far enough apparently.

It's a shame Capaldi suffered from generally shit writing. Some episodes were good, (Heaven Sent was a masterpiece, and that two parter with the underwater base with the ghosts was really good) and I loved his doctor, but as a whole, he had terrible episodes, and even his appearance was terribly inconsistent, and the idea that he somehow CHOSE a face was bullshit.

Personally I was hoping for a return to a more professorial father/grandfather figure type or something. Yknow, something like the first. But I was also expecting much worse so whatever. it was only a matter of time until the Doctor became a woman, since they introduced the notion that Time lords can reincarnate as other genders and races.

Still. As a very casual who fan, I'll probably skip for now. Not feeling this one, especially if it's the same writing and overall stuff we've been getting lately

Actually, the classic show established that the Doctor's random faces were something of an exception to the Time Lord norm. The writers mostly chalked it up to the fact that the Doctor tended not to plan in advance of his regenerations, which was the Time Lord custom: if a Time Lord triggers the regeneration on purpose, they have almost complete control of their appearance, like Romana literally trying on several bodies like they were outfits before settling on one she liked in Destiny of the Daleks, and the Master is shown to be trying on different eye colors when transitioning from Yana to Harold Saxon in Utopia. Also, the Doctor has taken the faces of people he's met before -- the Sixth Doctor shared the face of Commander Maxil of the Gallifreyan Guard. Usually the Doctor gets hit with a random face because he waits until the last possible moment to regenerate, but even then, there is a pattern to it all and the process is never entirely random.

...yeah so I might dissect Doctor Who canon like ThePlotTwist does the Castlevania canon. Wee bit passionate about the topic.

If y'all have any questions on Doctor Who's exhaustive canon, don't feel shy in asking. I've pretty much heard and answered them all by now.

So how do you feel about Clara Oswald.

Seems to be a fairly divisive subject

Kind of a soft-reboot that keeps continuity going, but beginning a new lifetime for the Doctor.

A while back, around the time that Capaldi entered the TARDIS, stories were run by a bunch of British papers about how the BBC are changing it so that effectively they can just keep doing this, effectively giving the Doctor an unlimited number of regenerations, and I think it was mentioned in a practically throwaway line.  The Beeb will wnat to keep milking Doctor Who for as long as they can, even when the writers are crap.

So how do you feel about Clara Oswald.

Clara was ok at first but they kept her around too long.  Now Donna and Rose were the Companions who I could not stand.  Especially Donna.  I find Catherine Tate deeply irritating.

strangely, I liked Clara better with Capaldi. She made for a nice grounding rod for his broody eccentricity.

But I thought the whole sendoff for Clara was overdone. we didn't need a time traveling diner with a locked in time immortal Clara Oswald. that whole thing was unnecessary.

but I liked her overall.

speaking of divisive topics, now that Capaldi is gone, how do we feel about his opening credits? I liked em, but many people seemed to throw a shitfit over them, and the fact they were based on a fan work

The send off for Clara was terrible!  I agree.  As for the opening cedits for Capaldi, I really liked them.  They were actually done as well by the guy who made the fan credits to begin with, iirc.  However, there were elements of the original fan vid that I prefered, such as the Seal of Rasssilon forming itself behind the title of 'Doctor Who'.  I was glad that they changed the style of the music a bit, bringing it closer to old school Who than the overblown orchestral versions that got worse and worse (even though I liked them in the tv movie).
Now, for a bit more controversial thought - is the Doctor half human, or pure Gallifreyan?
