Title: The Soul of Dracula (Fan Game)
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on June 04, 2011, 09:29:14 AM
So I stumbled upon this just now.
Although this isn't particularly new, I've not seen a link about it here, so I'm gonna go ahead and post it.
I know some people are familiar with this but I'll put it up anyway.

The Youtube comments page has download & instructions :D
The Soul of DRACULA -STAGE4 (Castlevania clone) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hRCeovxbvM#)

Seems to be an homage game with Haunted Castle style music and graphics, and it takes some concepts from the Gameboy games (ropes and eyeballs).

Man, if I didn't know any better I'd say this game is official. It looks like a WiiWare game.

Also, I love how the title screen says "Dacula". XD

Now that is solid gameplay if i ever saw it! It does look like a really old CV game from way back in the day, doesn't it.

I just gave it a try at normal, made it up to stage 3 and i can say that it is a very solid game. It remind me the nes, gb times with all the platform games that i used to play and trying to master them... :P

The only think that i found anoying, is that you don't have midair jump control of the character and you could really use it at stage 3 where you are climbing the chandeliers and that's as far as i made it into the game!!!

LOL, it totally does look like a GameGear game, minus the blurring.

Was impressed by the boss fight mechanics. Well designed.

Wish this or something like it would come out for XBLIG

I can't even beat Stage 2. Those water wheels are really annoying. o.o And I got anally-raped by an owl, too.

I love the end where he picks up the impaling poles and uses those. That is so awesome.

Look at you and your ability to play through the game without dying and me over here not even able to pass stage 2. You think you're better than me? (lol kidding. Great walkthrough)

Whoever made this has a great future ahead of them in game design.  I love that they did this old school Castlevania without relying on recycled gameplay concepts from the older games.  Lots of great, original ideas in there.  I wouldn't mind seeing this person (or persons) get handed a budget to create a brand new CV game.

I agree-gree. Perhaps a CV Rebirth 2 would be nice. Similar graphical styles, just Rebirth is brighter... and has a few recycled stuff.

Finally got around to watching the whole walkthrough. Wow. Very impressive game design wise. It's a perfect melding of Haunted Castle, Castlevania, and Legend of Dracula with plenty tasty originality to boot. Like everyone else I have to agree that the graphics blow, but they do remind me of the old DOS era games, so that's ok. It is practically begging for a graphical upgrade, though. That part with Death screwing with you before the fight with him was awesome as well as all the neat stuff in the second part of the main hall. The root chase in the forest was good too.

I dunno bout you guys, but I actually like the way the graphics look. They have a dark atmosphere to them. A graphical upgrade would be nice, but this is still cool.

Hate the music, love the game though!

The music sets the mood, but it is rather redundant. The tracks are too short for the looooooong stages.

this game has the best boss battles of the cv fan games, and some of them are better than the official game battles.
for example, the girm reaper boss battle, because you have to climb the chains and the death wants to make you fall cutting them offin the first part,in he second he throws his scickle like a boomerang.
in other words,it´s simply brilliant for me.
the dracula final form is too damn hard.
i could not defeat him.
only bad point is,you don´t have double-triple shot.
the graphic style seems to be a hibrid between the 8bit and 16bit style, and reminds me to the late 80´s games.

Yeah. The player character looks like they picked up a bum off the street, handed him some armor and a whip.

Wow, if I didn't know any better, I would say that this is a old school Classicvania minus the usual music.  Konami should find the the makers of this game and hire them now.  Then maybe we will get some creative CV games.  Don't get me wrong. I love CV games, but we really need some fresh blood to create CV games.  I love LoS, but it just doesn't feel like a CV game and should be its own series separate from CV.

I hope this doesn't count as a necro bump, but after seeing footage of this game, I'm very likely to believe it's the best Castlevania clone I've ever seen. This really, really looks like something Konami could have made on the Genesis or Game Gear, and I'd go so far as to claim Konami should purchase the game and adapt it into a Castlevania title.

Or at least consider it an actually playable iteration of Order of Shadows. :P

Wow, I just tried this game and it's freakin' awesome. It felt like Haunted Castle and The Adventure/ReBirth combined.

LOL. I just tried it too. On top of what I said before, I also have to add now that the controls are really tight and spot on. Really felt like I was playing a real CV game. Props to whoever made this.

Gave it a shot earlier... This is actually pretty enjoyable... Though the music REALLY needs improvement. Still, this is pretty impressive.

The art and music aren't that bad, but not that good too. But the gameplay and the feel is spot on. Great game.

I've started to play it and I love it. I do have an issue though..

When I play in fullscreen, it doesn't actually go to my current resolution (1360 x 768) but goes at a lower resolution. The problem with this is as the game begins to scroll, certain parts of the screen blur very, very strangely. Does anyone know of a way that I can force fullscreen to in fact be my resolution, and not a lower resolution that it normally goes to?

Low resolution games go into, surprise, low resolution mode... Your LCD monitor blurs it to smooth it out. It seems your LCD monitor has a very poor refresh rate if it's really noticeable or a problem while moving.

Typically there is no way to force games to your resolution.

yeah I dont like the style a whole lot either but its a very nice game. They obviously loved the classic CVs including Belmont Revenge alot. I think itd look a lot better with just a better main char sprite. He looks better in the ending. Durin the game tho he looks like a fat dude in football pads

Whoah, this game looks hard. Lots of interesting gameplay ideas - I felt the part that involved climbing the chains as Death was cutting them down was particularly creative (even if it did remind me of Donkey Kong, Jr.) The main character reminds me very much of Reinhardt from CV64. The music all seems original too, though I can't say I'm too crazy about it.
