Title: Turtles Collection Incoming
Post by: Bloodreign on March 09, 2022, 04:19:30 PM
This will have all the console and arcade TMNT games, from the NES, to the GB, to the SNES, to the Genesis, and the arcade games.

Ouch!  :o

It's nice to see this almost obscure series get the collection treatment.

Happy to see this announcement, I grew up playing many of those games. Countless tokens spent on that TMNT arcade cabinet back in the day...

I'm a little concerned that Digital Eclipse is handling the emulation and not M2 or someone with a better track record, but I'm crossing my fingers it'll be solid. Quite a collection of games, even going so far as to include all three unique versions of Tournament Fighters. Never woulda thought. They probably could have just released the arcade games and their Nintendo console equivalents and called it a day, maybe thrown in The Manhattan Project for good measure, but they really went the extra mile.

I hope TMNT1 on NES has an achievement titled "Shredder's My Ass, Splinter's My Balls."

I pretty much have everything on this collection outside of the arcade games, TMNT 3 Radical Rescue GB, and Tournament Fighters NES (I kick myself for not buying the $10 copy I saw at a pawn shop shortly before the game exploded in price). I also have none of the consoles this will be on, but with all the TMNT games I do have, I am pretty satisfied.

It's coming to Steam and I'm sure it'd play on even the shittest of PCs. 'Course, one can also just download ROMs and emulators.

I just hope that if/when Limited Run Games does a physical run, they get Tom duBois to do new artwork. I need his weird-ass lookin' Turtles in my life again.

Yeah I emulate the arcade games, my PC will be 10 years old shortly, thankfully MAME still plays pretty well on it.

I remember seeing his work for Turtles in time advertised in a magazine way back when. The close-up of Michelangelo's face with that all-toothy grin still kinda creeps me out.

I have all these games except the first TMNT GB title and the NES Fighters. I also have the 1up Arcade machine, so it's not like I'm lacking these games... and yet I still want this.

Also, similarly, should 1up Arcade do a Castlevania machine at some point (Haunted Castle and Vs. Castlevania when?), I will get that as well.

There's an ad that as a kid I had torn out of a magazine, I wonder if anybody could find a scan of it. Pretty sure it was by duBois and it had one of the Turtles (think it was Raph or Mikey), Montana Max, and a cowboy, probably from Sunset Riders. I thought that ad was so cool and I even traced it to have my own I could color, and I'd love to see it again.

Abnormal Freak@

That rings a loud bell. I know exactly what you're talking about as I also remember seeing that image. I just don't remember the mag. Maybe it was GamePro..? Can't recall.

In my case, I think I got it out of a Fox Kids mag, ha!

PFG9000@

I.. don't think that is it. The image I remember was done entirely by DuBois.

I love Tom DuBois's art.  I talked with some dude at a game convention a few years back.  He claimed to be Tom's agent, and he said Tom was working on collecting his work so that he could compile it into an art book.  Now that it's a few years later and nothing else has come of it, I wonder if he was legit.

I did buy this shitty-quality-but-still-cool print of the Dracula's Curse cover art from the guy.  Looks alright in my game room.

That's gotta be the same dude who posted on this board saying he knew who the artist was but wouldn't reveal it. (He did the same at a popular TMNT board.) Said he was in the plans of doing an artbook but nothing's come of it. Runs the "official" duBois Twitter account, too, and I think might've been in the My Life in Gaming mini-documentary briefly. Apparently he's duBois' friend now and it's cool we got to know the elusive artist after all this time, but it's still a weird situation and it's hee-larious that shitty low-quality art prints are being sold. Honestly, duBois' work deserves better.

But, he's doing some sweet LRG commissions now so that's good. I love all the attention he's been getting and all the new art that's resulted from it. I've thought for a while that his "agent" wanted to buy up all the original art before doing the big reveal, otherwise others may have swooped in to buy some of it for themselves.

Yep, I know. Sorry for the confusion.

As for the image I was thinking of, I didn't find it. Then again it's been over twenty-five years since I last saw it so who knows. That website however is loaded with awesome images! There are some that I didn't think he actually did  :o  8)

I'm a little surprised to see TMNT II: The Arcade Game on NES there. I always figured that was done by Steve Lavigne and Ryan Brown, since it closely resembles their style, but something always felt different about the poses and sense of action. DuBois' stuff has a lot of movement in it with incredible line of action, so it actually makes sense that he illustrated it.

It's fun seeing the Sparkster design sketches. I think he said that was the only time he had a hand in actually designing a character for Konami.

Edit: I asked about the TMNT2 box art and was told duBois painted the brick background, and likely the other BGs for that promo art but not the Turtles. So those may still be drawn by Mirage Studios' Lavigne/Brown. You can usually tell their work by the way they draw their heads and knuckles.
