Title: A few queries regarding the December sprite contest
Post by: Shiroi Koumori on November 21, 2014, 11:19:37 PM
Yeah, yeah, I know the November sprite contest is still ongoing, but I would just like to straighten out some things that I have at the back of my mind since I have delegated myself as the one who should start each sprite contest thread.

Without further ado, here are the questions:
1. The topic for December is FOOD. Is it (A) free for all or (B) specific types of food (please specify what you want)?
Answer: Free-for-all

2. What is the largest pixel size? Remember these are food items and not boss sprites.
Answer: 32x32 maximum

3. Who would want to volunteer as judges? I need 3 people.
Answers: Dracula9 (tentative), uzo, Lelygax

4. Additional rules: (tentative, subject to change)
a. maximum of 16 colors per food item
b. maximum of 5 food items per submitter
c. must have a write-up of the description of each food item submitted (can be funny/punny or just plain ol' serious)

I'd say do the free-for-all. The opportunity for Simon to find a Big Mac, a Pepsi, and some enchiladas in a wall is too funny to pass up.

Size I'm not sure on. Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact dimensions of the super-wallmeat in Rondo, but I'd say maybe somewhere along those lines for a cap.

And I may volunteer to judge, but I haven't yet decided. It all depends on whether the current contest burns me out for a bit.

Ditto.

I also agree for a free-for-all. (A Big Mac sounds awesome)

As for size I would say 30 X 30 pixels for minimum to 80 X 80 for maximum pixel size. (In case someone wants to do a palette of foods)

I already have a shameless idea for January's contest...lol

I guess make a 'complete' meal. The definition of that is up to the person doing the entry.

An example would be like:
- Miso Soup
- Sushi
- Green Tea

Each would be it's own item.

Also, I'm down for judging again.

I second that idea!

Hehehe. Send me a pm. I want to hear about it. I'll be asking for topics for January by mid/late December.

And, updated the first post with new stuff.

I vote for complete meals.

I'm a bit confused. When I said free-for-all, I didn't mean to insinuate I was against a complete-meal requirement. I thought the question meant a free-for-all as in food choice, or food choices from a list or something.

Yeah...I wasn't imagining a full meal either, but just whatever any one or number of food items you wanted.  I would prefer we have the freedom to do just do whatever we want, whether or not it goes together...if I wanna make steak and potatoes (a common meal) I can...or if I wanna make PBJ and sushi (probably not a good combo) I can...or if I just wanna make a handful of Doritos I can.

I just decided that a free-for-all is the best way to go.
People who want a complete meal set are free to do so, while those who want to submit just one item are also free to do so.

I still need a volunteer judge.

I think you'd make a fine judge, Lelygax.

You don't have to be an artist to make an opinion of art. It's really subjective anyway. I'd be interested to see how you perceive the entries.

I suggested the complete meal as a way to add a little depth to the contest. Food items are so incredibly small and easy to make, you'd figure doing a few would be nice. To tie them together, you use the meal theme.

Beyond that we need to discuss what size though. Normal CV item inventory icons are 16x16 I believe. I think that would be reasonable, and help make them faster to create. Castlevania has rarely ever exceeded that size for items, even in the classic games.

The icons in game also do not use an excess of 16 colors, which is very reasonable at that size as well. I would like to see that as one of the rules. Color management is a very very key component to style and art in general, especially pixel art. To be explicit, that means 16 colors per each individual food item sprite.

That's more than enough colors at that scale. I second uzo's proposals.

Ditto, Im only against 16x16  size. In Rondo we couldn't find bigger foods?

That was one of the very few exceptions. You could indeed find a secret giant wall meat.

I'm referring more to the item inventory icons you see in the later games though, which are all 16x16.

Ah. I was figuring we'd be making the itemdrop versions of the food, not their icons.

Regarding the exploration titles they're one in the same, with the exception of SotN I believe.

SotN was the one I was envisioning, given its plethora of fully-plated meal options.

Now I remember that a giant Turkey saved uzo in his livestream against SotN's Dracula... See uzo? You owe one to these giant foods! :P

The main reason I'm more for having the ability to do a single item is because I'm gonna be a noob when I pick it up and give it a try.  If I don't get started right at the beginning of Dec., I'll be starting when my current online class ends and I have much more time -- the 18th.  Although, my reason for liking the single item is mainly the noob stuff and not as much the time constraint.

And I was imagining "the sky is the limit" in a sense, remembering the seemingly endless list of foods you could get in SotN...but I'm not sure I know what the difference is between itemdrop versions or their icons?

And I was imagining "the sky is the limit" in a sense, remembering the seemingly endless list of foods you could get in SotN...but I'm not sure I know what the difference is between itemdrop versions or their icons?

Here some examples:

Icons:

Drops:

Notice that some are strange, "mini" versions of the real thing. Ok maybe not strange, but these bigger are so better looking.

I personally prefer the item drop editions because they foods just look prettier with more details.
I'll add the 16 colors per food item requirement.

So, what's the final maximum size?
Since we're doing a free for all, may I suggest a maximum amount of foods per submitter? We don't want to cram the entire thread with a plethora of foodstuffs, right? Plus, that would make the ones creating the sprites devote more time and effort for polishing.
And as a little add on work for the spriters, they have to make a write-up of the item description since I love reading those.

Lelygax has been added to the judges.

I think the limit should be around 3 items, 5 tops.

What is the final maximum size per food item?

I find 64 X 29 pixels to be a good size. I have a roasted pig for Vamprotector that size and it fit's well with the smaller sized foods really well.

It also works great for a palette of foods.

64 pixels wide seems a bit too excessive IMO, maybe 48x32 tops since we're trying to keep it small here.

In case you need to make a tall dish it should be a square limit. 32x32 should be more than enough.

Squares look nice. 32x32 then.
