Entries:
1st place (tie) Chernabogue: You'll Die at My Place (http://www.mediafire.com/listen/2tiyugh5gobzusn/Chernabogue_-_You'll_Die_At_My_Place.mp3) (covering "I'll Sell at My Place (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5-tNAMamsU#ws)", the Merchant's theme from Harmony of Dissonance). It's short, but go try remixing that fucking theme and we'll talk. ;) Inspired by The Arcade's "Walking on the Edge" remix and by the LoS soundtracks. Features a laugh as requested by Dracula9 (even if I couldn't find the real one). Enjoy!

1st place (tie) Dracula9: Drew a little bit of inspiration from Carmilla's Fight.
Chosen theme is Forest of Monsters from SCVIV.

3rd place BairaagiVN: I did a boss battle-style remix of CV2's Silence of Daylight in Famitracker.
https://soundcloud.com/bairaagi/bairaagi-in-broad-daylight (https://soundcloud.com/bairaagi/bairaagi-in-broad-daylight)

2nd place BMC_War Machine: Hey guys  :) i just threw this together in about 30 mins, still has plenty to be done to it but just to give you the idea so far
Stalker - Followers of Darkness IV

I wanted to take something that really wouldn't sound like a boss track at all for the challenge lol.  This is all the midi based parts that are being used (i'll probably add more later for some flair), the rest will be live instruments.
(mod: I think this is incomplete, but just added it anyway.)

Question, are medleys or snippets from other songs allowed so long as the one main theme has dominance?

I'd say yes, as long as the "main" theme chosen for the arrangement has dominance. We should precise which "main" theme we decided to arrange to avoid confusion then.

I second Chern's comment.

Don't forget to write the main theme on your post with the link.

Now this could be badass. I REALLY hope someone picks Simon's Theme, cause I've wanted to hear a battle version of that for YEARS.
Title: Re: December 2014 Castlevania Dungeon MUSIC Contest
Post by: Dracula9 on December 01, 2014, 12:25:34 PM
What about the KKC and Whiprush versions, uzo?
Title: Re: December 2014 Castlevania Dungeon MUSIC Contest
Post by: uzo on December 01, 2014, 12:35:13 PM
Just being a rock arrangement doesn't make it a boss theme automatically. They really need to set the right tone for a battle.

I wouldn't consider either of them to be a boss battle track.
Title: Re: December 2014 Castlevania Dungeon MUSIC Contest
Post by: Dracula9 on December 01, 2014, 12:40:31 PM
KKC version, maybe not, but I could definitely see Whiprush as a final boss theme.

Still could use more than a guitar, though. I will agree with you there.

I assume when you say "KKC version" you mean Dracula Battle, correct? Because if not....there you go.

Yes, the DBPS version.

IIRC, the Perfect Battle albums were from Naoto Shibata, and not the KKC, right?

Possibly. It's been a while since I've had to recall the specifics.

Title: Re: December 2014 Castlevania Dungeon MUSIC Contest
Post by: Dracula9 on December 02, 2014, 01:39:00 AM
It's not a request, but I may as well post it in case it can get the gears turning.

I'm planning on doing a reworking of SCVIV's Forest of Monsters, with infusions of (assuming I can work them in effectively) Mad Forest, The Caves, and Forest of Jigramunt. The idea is to shy away from the more-typical heavy and super-fast-paced (meaning specifically the themes like Into the Dark Night) boss themes of the series, and go with something more percussion-heavy (ALL OF THE CONGAS) and tribal-sounding.

Assuming of course I can pull it off and it doesn't come out a total trainwreck. Here's hoping.

Nice concept. Very catchy and definitely word keep me alert in a boss fight.

When I read (ALL OF THE CONGAS), suddenly Blanka's theme entered my mind.  :P

Im thinking about making "Stalker" from CV1 into a boss theme...ah, I can hear the organs and guitars now  ;D another cool thought I just had would be,to make it even more interesting would be to allow multiple composers, sure the awards would be a little odd for something like that, but imagine how good a few of us teaming up for tunes could make something?

That could be an idea for a future contest. Be sure to bring that up when petitions for the next contest theme arise.

I was going to do some fast and badass version of The Caves :-[ Oh well, I'll have to think some other song. I was thinking of Theme of Simon too, but I think I'll try something less obvious.

I'll just have to finish a Final Fantasy III medley... and the 17 minute CV cover from November... and 4 of my original songs... during December. So I'll definitely take part in this if I have time! ;D
Title: Re: December 2014 Castlevania Dungeon MUSIC Contest
Post by: Dracula9 on December 04, 2014, 04:53:04 PM
Feel free to, Zannibal. The part of that song featuring The Caves is brief, and uses a liquid-esque arp, so it's not very in-your-face noticeable.

It'll be quite difficult to do something with a source that's two-measure long, hehe. But that's a challenge I'll definitively do.

First off, I love that you're using Forest of Monsters. Very good deal.

To critique, if I might; the percussion is a bit muddled but loud and overshadows the main melody IMO. You may either want to tone down the volume on the (ethnic?) drums, switch the sample you're using, or both. You want the main tune to be clean and distinct, especially if it's to be used as a boss theme.

My 2 cents. Keep at it though!

Interesting!  Blending tidbits of PoR's Forest of Doom ("The Hidden Curse") into CV4's "Forest of Monsters".
But I agree with Sindra... and I think the muddled factor is due to reverb.  I cannot tell if the percussion sample is heavily decayed or if you're just adding more reverb to the entire thing.

Loving the fast beat to the song. I would tone the beat down just a tad so it doesn't sound like it's in fast forward (if that makes sense)

I would also pump up the drums and crank up that Forest of Monster theme a bit more so that it stands out individually as the main melody of the track.

Otherwise I am liking this alot!

Post by: Dracula9 on December 07, 2014, 05:55:56 PM
Now that I've got the tablas I wanted, I'm working on fixing the percussion currently. I'm hesitant to slow the song down, because it runs the risk of sounding like an ordinary remix if its tempo is too close to the original Forest of Monster's.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. That reverb needs to get toned down HARD.

My entry: You'll Die at My Place (http://www.mediafire.com/listen/2tiyugh5gobzusn/Chernabogue_-_You'll_Die_At_My_Place.mp3) (covering "I'll Sell at My Place (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5-tNAMamsU#ws)", the Merchant's theme from Harmony of Dissonance).

It's short, but go try remixing that fucking theme and we'll talk. ;) Inspired by The Arcade's "Walking on the Edge" remix and by the LoS soundtracks. Features a laugh as requested by Dracula9 (even if I couldn't find the real one). Enjoy!

Maybe I'll do another entry later, or change a little this one.

Ooohhh.Drums.....

You made it a tad slower, this feels way better.

I still say crank up those congos even more..they feel like they should be louder

I like everything else about this song.

I hate fade out's, you should create a outro to the song. Maybe a solo congo beat or something..it just seems to go out

Its getting better and better, you should try to use more of these effects near the end in the rest of the music if it sounds good.

Hey since this is the first time I'm doing remixing of this sort I'm in need of a little help. I've got my idea all planned out and even have a nice intro for my theme. What I am lacking however is a reasonable library of soundfonts. I'm using Logic Pro X and I'm in dire need of drums/ percussion fonts. Right now I have a timpani and a bunch of synthesizers that do not sound the way I need them to. Cheers to whoever helps me.

Look into the Unison, SGM, and Timbres of Heaven soundfonts. They have great drumkits.

I'd post them myself but the latter two are very large files, and with how wonky Mediafire's been acting with me lately I don't think it would comply with them.

Ultimate Drums (http://soundfonts.homemusician.net/drum_kits_and_percussive_kits_soundfonts/ultimate_drums.html) has got the cure for what ails you.
Many varied percussion banks.  I often use them on my tunes so that I'm not stuck with generic drums.
These percussion banks are arguably better than what most people use for their percussion (SGM 2.01's percussion sets).

If you're willing to invest money, buy Addictive Drums. One of the best VST I ever tried for drums. (Basically, it's a virtual drumkit with lots of customizable stuff.)

As you know, I mix and match.

As for VSTi's, they can also try "Drumkit from Hell" or "Kontakt" percussion sets.  Those are pretty great as well, but they asked specifically for Soundfonts.

As for Soundfonts... yeahhhh.... about that...

Timbres of heaven download from midkar seems to fail every time I try, does anyone know of any other mirrors?
Edit: I hate to be asking for this much help but I've looked all over google but the program I'm using(Logic Pro X) uses EXS24 in order to import sf2 files into it's sample bank, however ALL Rhythm FX seems to be working but all of the other ultimate drums sound like a tribal barrel drum and half of the SGM ones do too(other half contained in SGM do work) anyone have a clue as to why this might be happening?

I wanted to take something that really wouldn't sound like a boss track at all for the challenge lol.  This is all the midi based parts that are being used (i'll probably add more later for some flair), the rest will be live instruments.

Does ultimate drums have an eq setting in there?  I use EZDrummer 2 and i always set mine to "Dry" on the EQ, that dampens things out and turns the room noise off completely.  Maybe try a high and low pass filter?  That might help out the boomy sound of the tribal drums - hope it helps  ;D

Ultimate Drums is a soundfont, not a VSTi, so I'm not sure if there will be settings that change the wet/dry level.  I usually just couple it with a VST for that track if I want to make it more sparce-sounding, though there are enough patches in there for quite a few things.

EZD2 is way better than most of the drum stuff you can find on the Internet. ;)

Just a helpful reminder: 6 days to go before Christmas day which is also the deadline for all your music submissions.
Do not forget to write a note stating that the said submission is final so that I can compile all entries on the top post.

My submission is the final one. Won't have the time nor the will to work on it before the deadline. :)

Final entry. Drew a little bit of inspiration from Carmilla's Fight.

Chosen theme is Forest of Monsters from SCVIV.

Hello! I was directed to this contest from Sindra on Twitter. I did a boss battle-style remix of CV2's Silence of Daylight in Famitracker.

https://soundcloud.com/bairaagi/bairaagi-in-broad-daylight (https://soundcloud.com/bairaagi/bairaagi-in-broad-daylight)

I doubt I'll get much of a chance to edit it in the next few hours, so consider it a final entry.  Thanks!

Heck of a first post, this is really great! I also loved the village theme from Simon's Quest. That theme doesn't get enough love and you don't hear it remixed so often.

All entries are already on the first post.

Please vote in the poll.

OK, some comments on other people's entries:

Dracula9 -- This definitely sounds like a modern boss battle theme. It would fit perfectly in an action film or a Lords of Shadow-type game. The percussion in the beginning makes the song you're remixing clear, although I'm having a hard time picking out the original melody or bassline. (Saying that is kinda hypocritical since the first half of my entry is so loosely based on the original track that it's probably unrecognizable...)  And of course, you clearly know what you're doing in terms of mixing/mastering.

Chernabogue -- I wasn't familiar with the track you're remixing, but on listening to both I see the resemblance.  This is very much a heroic effort in taking such a short song and turning it into a full entry.  Like Dracula9's entry, this would work in a film or modern game, but yours had a more direct focus on the melody (which fits my personal preferences better).

BMC_War Machine -- You mentioned adding live instruments later.  Are they going to be kick-ass rock/metal guitars?  I get the feeling that it would work out fantastically.  I also appreciate that you're remixing Stalker, one of the more neglected tunes from CV1.

hey thanks! :) unfortunately I didnt have a chancs after I entered the rough draft, but I will definitely be adding the metal to it at another time for sure! :)

Thanks! Had a bit of a rough time going from the previous iteration to this one (if you go back a few pages and listen it'll be obvious just how much). Ultimately I do agree that the main tune isn't very obvious, but the changes I made to the percussion beat (which was always meant as one of the main focuses of this remix) made it difficult to get the original bassline in there without muddying the percussion up. I wound up, due to the time crunch, having to decide between the percussion or bassline being lost, and I chose the latter. That being said, most of the long ambient strings are based in the notes used in the original song.

But hell, I had fun with this and then some. Finally had something to use those choir "zhuu" sounds for. :)

Also, two questions. Are the contestants allowed to vote, and are the results being kept hidden until reveal day?

I found them all about equally unfit for a boss battle except Chernabogue's. It was just a mess though. The only song I actually liked as a music piece was BMC_War_Machine, so that's where my vote went.

I've voted in Bairaagi submission, I was almost voting in Chernabogue's. Sorry but these 2 were the only ones that sounded like a boss theme to me, so while the others aren't bad, they don't fit IMO. Dracula9 earlier submission was much better than his last one, so he should pursue that style.

Commenting on the other entries:

Dracula9: Nice use of the percussion. The arrangement goes a little awry when the flute is introduced. It sounds really ominous after 1:00. I had trouble hearing the original, but the arrangement sounded really nice as a whole. You improved a lot.

BairaagiVN: Very nice! I didn't expect some chiptune. The arrangement itself is interesting. The additions to the original source are great, especially the minor chords. But it's toooooo short! :D

BMC_War Machine: Great choice here. The drums are a little too MIDI-sounding, and the arrangement lacks punch (even with the drum kit). However, I really like how you arranged the source. The theme is easily recognizable, and the new additions are also interesting.

Hope I'm not sounding too harsh -- we have some great entries! :)

hey man you're not sounding harsh at all. The midi sound and lack of punch just comes from it being a WIP, I didnt have it done but was just getting it up on here for people to get an idea of how it was starting out. The punch and midi sound are just the parts of the song trapped in WIP hell lol, those wouldnt sound that way if I had finished it. Im surprised I got any votes at all considering I hadn't completed the song lol

Dracula9 earlier submission was much better than his last one, so he should pursue that style.

That one was literally just a sped-up version of the original with alternate melodies blended in. Not really a remix if all I'm doing is speeding it up.

There are parts of that one I much prefer to my final entry (though the final's percussion beats the old one by a mile IMO), but ultimately I figured a sped-up version would be frowned upon more than my final entry's style.

I also did the final one at the last minute. If I'd had more time I'd have been able to do more with it, but c'est la vie.

Congrats to everyone -- and always remember, you never lose in a compo, you always learn. :) I'll let Dracula9 decide for next month's theme, since I basically gave my idea for this one. ;)

Well, hell, thanks Chern.  :)

Erm...converting a post-NES/SNES song into one befitting of one of the SNES/NES titles (i.e. Tocatta into Blood-Soaked Darkness in Akumajo Densetsu VRC6 chiptune or DXX/CV4 style or something like that, since this one had no style restrictions, and the aforementioned soundbanks are available on here)? I dunno, I wasn't expecting to be given the honor, so I haven't exactly had time to mull it over.

If so, I call dibs on the half with the luscious mane of flowing hair.  ;D

I'll use standard rules for ties without tie-breaker:

-All tied winners get the award they tied for.
-The award for the tier under that disappears.
-The runners-up get the tier under the disappeared tier award.

So for this, we shall have two Gold Awards, no Silver Award, and the 2nd place gets the Bronze.
