Title: CV1&2 - NES Classic Ed.
Post by: Abnormal Freak on July 14, 2016, 05:51:20 PM
Thought this was kinda cool.

http://www.nintendo.com/nes-classic (http://www.nintendo.com/nes-classic)

An official HDMI NES box with 30 preloaded games including Castlevania and Simon's Quest. Uses an NES-style Classic Controller that you can also use on your Wii and Wii U.

Apparently there's no way to expand the library, which is a missed opportunity. Would be cool if you could link your NNID and download any eShop Virtual Console games you've purchased.

I think I'll get one anyway just for the fun of it, and to have a two-button Classic Controller.

Huh... it has Super C yet no sign of the original Contra.  That also happened with the Wii Virtual Console.  Why is it that the first Contra is always left out?

Tangent aside, this seems neato.  Would've been nice if there was support for NES carts at the top or something so it doubles as an official famiclone (even if having carts stick at the top isn't really authentic).

I was hoping it would have online purchasing of more NES games.

You mean you can't even play original nes cartridges on it?

Way to take a great idea and botch it Nintendo...

But hey. At least they put ballon fight on it. That game is the best.

What immediately turned me off was the lack of Dracula's Curse. I'd have had that on there over the first two any day. I might grab it, since I know some people in my family would love it, but man, would've been an instant buy if it had that roster of games plus Dracula's Curse.

Contra is even absent from the Wii U VC. I'm not sure why.

And yeah, someone will probably hack the NES Classic. Guess it depends on whether the USB port is strictly for power or if you can access internal storage with it.

Hoped for CV3 as well, but I'll definitively be buying one in November :)

I don't think I'll be getting this. It's an okay idea, but Nintendo should be taking this thing to the top. The entire NES library is not all that big in terms of memory storage so I really don't see why that can't put the whole list of games onto that one tiny NES system. If they did, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. But like Belmontoya stated; Way to take a great idea and botch it Nintendo...

I wouldn't say the ENTIRE library, since the NES has a significantly high amount of shovelware on it. But man, they could EASILY fit all the biggest NES hits on there.

All three Castlevanias, for starters. At the very least the original Mega Man trilogy, if not all six of them. The whole Ninja Gaiden trilogy, the whole Double Dragon trilogy, the original Contra... that's just naming a few games that should've been in the package.

But I'm really sour about the lack of Dracula's Curse.

If this one sells, and I expect it will, expect to see an NES classic 2 and 3 in stores in the coming years. Dracula's Curse will probably be on one of them, along with some significant but not overwhelming overlap from this release.

*I like it and it's a fine game for its time don't get me wrong. Probably even a little underrated these days. But the 3rd game is so much better and it's obvious which has more mass appeal.

I'll get my mom one for Christmas.

She won't mind the limited library.

But for me... I'll just stick with my original redesigned NES and my ouya.

Well if they're going for just one from Mega Man and one from Double Dragon, they've made some good choices at least.  Mega Man 2 is, to some, the best in the classic series and a really solid game overall.  As for Double Dragon II, it has co-op over Double Dragon I.  Also it's less janky in comparison and it has that overpowered knee attack.

Also it's baffling that Dracula's Curse wasn't included.  It's like they're teasing up with leaving the third one (and possibly best) out.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more consoles (I guess we can call it that?) like this, especially if this one sells (as has been suggested), but I honestly wouldn't be surprised either if Nintendo was leaving out some details in regards to ability to add games.  Like, maybe adding new games isn't the plan right now, but if they see it sell well they announce something like, "Now you can add new games to this system!  Pick up this cable, connect to the internet, and you can download these games at $X each / another set of games for $X!"  Y'know...just not telling us that it actually does have the capability or that it's on the horizon.  I don't know why they wouldn't tell us that, but it somehow seems like the kind of thing Nintendo would do.

Nonetheless, and limited collection or not, I want it!  My wife and I have already discussed how it's somewhat pointless since I have a system that will play NES games, already own a few from the collection, and that I also want to own a bunch (or all) of the original NES cartridges anyway.  Thankfully she seems to understand (possibly read as, "tolerate") my desire to collect retro-NES and SNES items.
Title: Re: CV1&2 - NES Classic Ed.
Post by: Belmontoya on July 15, 2016, 10:28:37 AM
The problem is that the ability to play more games and add games is fundamental.

by not allowing acess to more games via virtual console store or even the ability to play cartridges, Nintendo will be deliberately missing out on a huge source of money and fans will be disappointed.

There's absolutely no reason or excuse for it.

Honestly a lot of people still prefer their classic Nintendo's over modern consoles and games.

If Nintendo were smart they would make this new classic style NES console with online capabilities and they would develop new 8bit classic style Nintendo games for it. People would go nuts over that.

There is so much wasted potential with Nintendo that it drives me crazy.

You guys are way over thinking this thing. This isnt a new retro console from Nintendo thats gonna see support like a normal generation console. This a legal emulator on a chip of classic NES games. Its no different than the sega one or the atari one or any of the other "plug into a tv and play builtin games" systems. Only this is official instead of floating around in that space between illegal and no one really cares anymore

It could be a test for a future virtual console only mini console from nintendo... but I doubt it. Most likely this is just a neat cash in for the holiday season. If it does well we may see more versions in the future but dont over think it here

Bad news guys (http://gamerant.com/nintendo-nes-mini-no-more-games/). No internet is onboard, and no USB or SD support means these 30 games are all we'll ever get.

Still worth $60 I think, but way less bang for your buck than we were hoping.

Voting with my wallet.  iTunes>Nintendo's Latest Error.

Why not leverage the influence of Social Media to force Nintendo's hand to copy Dracula's Curse.nes onto this thing?

Yeah, this is really more just the kind of thing you buy your nieces or nephews for Christmas so they can "experience how games were in the old days". Or for an impulse buy for that non-gamer dad or mom in their 30s who see it in the store and say "oh man I used to love the Nintendo as a kid I gotta get this". I'm sure people will take the thing apart and figure out how to add more games to it, just like people figured out how to take apart the Atari Flashback 2 and add a cartridge slot. But that's kind of beside the point of the device.

If this one sells well enough, we'll probably get another one in a year or two, with many of the same games but maybe 10 or 15 different ones. It might be shaped like a toploader and come with dog-bone controllers, it might even have a cartridge slot. If there are noticeable emulation errors from this first one, it'll correct those, but it probably will still be just a tiny emulator in a box rather than a more expensive re-creation of the original hardware.

PS- Since I've mentioned the Flashback a lot here's a look at it to give you more of an idea of what this Nintendo will probably be like. Btw it's definitely a conscious decision to limit the games to release more iterations. You can fit every NES game on a single small USB flashdrive and you can fit every Atari 2600 game onto a single floppy disk but they still limited it to 40.

Ultimately, yes, it's a plug-and-play toy—and one that appeals to me much more than other ones. It's fine for what it is.

Funny you should mention that, cuz my plan was to buy this for my uncle and aunt, since they've pretty much stopped gaming after the rise of 3D consoles. I'm not big on the whole idea of the system (though $2 per game is what the system is pretty much selling, and that's a more fair price than the Virtual Console games), but I know my family would love this thing.

Yeah that sounds like a great idea. I was considering buying one for some family members to. It looks to be a nice no-fuss thing with plenty of great games at a good price that hooks right into your modern TV. 30 games should certainly keep non-gamers busy for a long time. For casual fans or kids who just want a hit of old school goodness without any fuss this should be a no-brainer, barring any unforeseen issues. Which seem unlikely considering Nintendo's usual quality control. There's nothing wrong with the concept of the system, I just don't think the target audience is hardcore old school gamers so we shouldn't expect or ask for the moon.

I'll admit that I'm not terribly advanced when it comes to tech-knowledge-y ( :)) but is is not feasible for Nintendo to add to this later?  I can't site any specific examples, but I feel like I can recall several times in the past where they've said, "No, this will not do X, Y, Z," only to have them add that feature later.  (Here's where the tech-knowledge-y issue comes in...)  Sure they're saying it doesn't connect to the internet or anything, but couldn't they be keeping that to themselves for now, planning to release a $20 something to enable connectivity later?
Title: Re: CV1&2 - NES Classic Ed.
Post by: Jorge D. Fuentes on July 16, 2016, 11:48:29 AM
Actually I think the reason Dracula's Curse wasn't added is more akin to "That game is harder to emulate with our current emulator console thing".
But that idea doesn't hold too much water because the Wii and Wii (and 3DS) emulate the game pretty much perfectly.

I do know that other consoles fail at this and other special-chip games.

What do you mean? The world totally needed another plug'n play with Pac Man and Galaga.
I have and have sometimes played Ghosts'n Goblins on the NES but I'm not sure who it would really appeal to these days other than the extremely nostalgic. Considering you can play the much-better-looking arcade original now. If you're gonna be a masochist at least have something nice to look at right? Gorgoyle's Quest 2, now that would've been an interesting choice.

I was kinda thinking that too. Same with Simon's Quest. I dunno who the game will really appeal to nowadays with its obvious and intentional lack of direction (not to mention the blatant deception in direction). CV3 is another more straight-forward action game, but unlike CV1, the multiple stage paths, playable characters, and alternate endings might have appealed more to the modern gamers who are used to more options.

I'm just salty about no CV3.

The thought crossed my mind as well. If they do make another one in the future, it'd probably be even more third party stuff, since Nintendo put their best first party games on here. CV3, MM3 or 1, Ninja Gaiden 2 and or 3, Dragon Warrior, Contra 1, Double Dragon 1 etc. I'd personally love to see some more obscure games like Guardian Legend on a new one

I started seeing it used about 2 years ago. It's handy because it can have a mix of meanings but the primary implication in the usage that I've seen is that someone is angry/bitter/envious over something someone else did or possesses. It's also useful online because there's so many different salt-related images to be found or make.

So with the announcement of the Famicom Mini in Japan, d'ya suppose it'll have the cartridge or FC Disk version of Akumajou Dracula? The latter would be cool with its save feature.

The box art in the video (skip to 2:00 for relevant footage) shows the Disk System logo so I assume it'll be the original version.

Probably won't get one unless you can plug Wii Classic Controllers into it like you can the NES Mini/Classic Edition, because the Famicom Mini comes with hard-wired and extremely tiny Famicom controllers, so that they can dock onto the sides of the system like with the original Famicom. Sounds like a pain in the ass to play with but kinda cute nonetheless. I'd have preferred accurate Famicom controller replicas acting as Wii Classic Controllers, because that'd be a lot more fun to use with the rounded edges as opposed to the boxy NES style.

Nintendo could be releasing new NES games and they would probably sell better than Wii U games or anything else.

NES is timeless and is the king.

Absolutely, and I felt that this was a wasted opportunity. Imagine this NES/Famicom machine with the entire game library on it. Including some of those obscure games that never made it over here. Easily done with today's storage capacity. THAT would be the s**t and I would definitely get one.

It's out! :)

Anyway the pdfs of the game manuals can be found here:
NES version (US) https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/en/index.html (https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/en/index.html)
Famicom version (JP) https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/ja/index.html (https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/ja/index.html)

They at least added info about some townspeople being pranksters/liars to the electronic manual, but it lacks a lot of ino from the printed version. Also no CV2 JP manual? No "Dracula 2" on Mini FC?

Jorge, if it's successful they'll probably bring out a sequel or a way to load more games onto the existing one.

Do they come with one controller only? Because how easy would it be to sell a second controller with some games built into it. People would lap that up and it would be inexpensive to produce and sell.

The Mini FC only has Castlevania 1. There are some titles that are exclusive for the US and the JP versions.

Do they come with one controller only?

The US version has one controller. The Japanese version has 2.

------------
And I haven't got one yet. Hahaha.

It only comes with one controller? The hell? Then why package 2-player games in it? That's honestly a really weird decision.

Just another set of confusing decisions made by Nintendo... The only reason the famicom mini has 2 if because the famicom had built in controllers and including 1 would have just been silly.

I'm assuming the NES mini takes regular NES controllers, otherwise yes it's weird.

At least the NA and PAL versions came with extra titles.
Think I'll hold out for the SNES mini though.

Yes. Yes! A mini SNES would kick ass.

What games? That's easy:

Super Mario World
Yoshi's Island: SMW2
Super Mario All-stars
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Super Mario Kart
Super Punch Out
F-Zero
Pilotwings
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2
Donkey Kong Country 3
Contra III
Super Castlevania IV
Axelay
Mega Man X
Mega Man 7
Street Fighter II Turbo
Super Street Fighter II
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Plok
Kirby Super Star
Star Fox
Actraiser
Sim City
UN Squadron
TMNT Turtles in Time

You're welcome  ;D

EDIT: I know some of these won't happen. Turtles for instance, or Plok. But overall I think at least 75% of this list is pretty likely, don't you?

Sadly, it doesn't take in regular NES controllers, as it uses the same port as the Wii Classic Controller.  But hey, it takes in Wii Classic Controllers as input... which isn't being manufactured anymore.  I presume it also works with anything that uses the classic controller plug, although the only things available brand new are either shitty third party controller and that PDP Gamecube controller-esque controller... and the position of the dpad is naff there.

Yeah, your point still stands... this is a confusing decision made by Ninty.  Ninty confuses me and hurts my head.

It's really dumb. I hope they start selling the controllers separately, then. I have Wii Classic Controllers, but they feel really weird for most games (weird ass shape of them).

I'm not sure if this applies to the NES Classics games, but for the VC, they made the baffling decision of mapping B and A for the NES games onto the actual B and A buttons on the Classic Controller instead of the more ergonomical Y and B buttons.  At least the Wii U VC allowed you to remap the buttons, which would've been helpful if the Wii VC had that...

the cord is less than half the length of the original.  why would they do that?

It probably came down to either target demographic and/ or cost.

Honestly I understand still retaining a port, but why does it need a cord at all? Varta batteries are a dime a dozen.

It's kinda baffling to see the short cord length in my opinion since
a) back when Nintendo did wired controllers, the wires were very long.
b) screen can get very big nowadays, and well you kinda have to be far away to get a decent view as well as not strain your eyes

it's like they designed this for the Wiimote in mind and were just like "yeah, throw it in for the NES classic I suppose."  I guess the above is moot if you're playing it on a computer monitor.

Also the Sega Genesis controller has a short cord.  Someone should do a comparison  :)

This give me some AVGN vibes, what were they thinking?!

If I'm right, original Famicom have short cords, but not that short and it was because it was inside the console but for this one... Its like these old videogames made between Atari and NES. How you can play it without almost kissing your TV? At least its HDMI or AV cable, whatever it comes bundled, is huge enough so you can let the console nearby?

Yeah, I think the cord length was made with the Wiimote in mind. It'd be a pain in the ass if it were as long as the original and plugged into the Wiimote.

That being said, a cord extension for the NES Classic would have been nice.

There is one. Its 3rd party but there are extender cords already on the market. Good luck finding the console to go with it tho!

Was talking an official one, but at least there are some out there. Though, I'm always really wary of third-party stuff since most of it winds up being garbage.

The Wiimote extensions that I got from raphnet all work really well. They only about double the length of a Classic Controller cord so there's no 6' extension here (only 1 meter / 3.28 feet according to the site), but they're solidly built. Worth looking into it, especially if you wanna pick up some cool controller adapters for other systems.

So you're saying, We can hack this thing and put a proper library on it? because as-is All I see is Nintendo milking nostalgia with the most minimalistic effort.

Tales of Phantasia, though it was never technically English subbed for the SNES, but there is a subbed version floating around.

I'm glad to see someone else who enjoyed it!  I can't remember how I stumbled upon it, but I fell into it like many people fall into storybooks!  Silly but good story, good game play, entertaining characters and 4th wall breaks, awesome music...such a great game!

I've had an idea once that I thought would be interesting in a video game.  If ever I somehow had the chance and skills to make that idea into a game, I'd want the end result to be similar to how the story and characters are portrayed in SoE...a mix of serious and funny.

When I did GameMastering for a Pen&Paper RPG we were playtesting in College, I applied many of Evermore's principles.

SoE has a slow start (most people get turned off by the lack of anything helpful in the Bugmuck/Prehistoria area) but it ends spectacularly well.
It's hilarious that even the game designers have yet to remember what the hell the "Magic Gourd" does! xD
