Title: Finally, really playing ROB.
Post by: MooMilk on February 01, 2017, 06:48:19 PM
Until now I haven't really played ROB. It gots so many secrets I thought i'd take forever. But now I've played through it normally and now I'm trying all the alternate routes. I also found a couple prisoners. I am really enjoying it. I just played through 3' and thought the way they required a axe to access a secret route was brilliant. I don't like that those dropping blocks don't reappear tho so I couldn't get the 50 heart powerup. After I find all the prisoners I'll replay it with Maria. I wanna get good at this game and get it memorized. I liked some of the exclusive enemies that didn't appear in SOTN like that guard on the bridge or the gargoyles. The gargoyles were tough to kill but I dug the spritework. Can't wait to make this a game that's old to me and memorize it and make it a game I replay once in a while.

I used to think it was too hard but this time I'm playing with cheats on. Maybe after a while I'll try it again with cheats off. It's annoying turning them off after beating the boss and then turning them back on.

It's sad that the 50-Heart item doesn't reappear in DXC PSP (main part - the game that used 3D models). Will be cool if placed in Boss Rush Mode or somewhere else.

My favorite is stage 5B and stage 6. Stage 2B has some of the most clear blue sky in the Castlevania history and I also like it.
The scene of revised stage 5B in DXC is a little too dark but the level design itself is awesome.

Maybe after I get bored of ROB I play through the dxc remaster. I played it before but I couldnt enjoy it cause the whole time I was thinking about what the original would look like.

Playing classicvanias with cheats on really isn't something I'd condemn, especially on a first playthrough. While Rondo isn't really among them, there are classicvanias where, unless you manage to develop near perfect control and reflexes they just aren't beatable without cheats.
For me, Castlevania Chronicles, Castlevania Dracula X SNES (best ending, at least), The Castlevania Adventure, and Belmont's Revenge are thoroughly in that category of crushingly hard playthroughs that I always end up seeming to need cheats to beat no matter how good I seem to get.

Rondo isn't exactly one of the best entries in the series -- a lot of its reputation had been built up in that 14 year gap wherein it was extremely difficult to obtain; almost impossible in fact. It did do several new things, such as bringing voiced cutscenes to the series (however badly animated they were). Honestly though, the most important thing it actually did (that some other game couldn't have done) was that it laid the foundation for the plot of Symphony of the Night.

It's a fun game, and a very smooth experience. I advise people play it because they will probably enjoy it.

I just think it's a very average entry when you take the series as a whole.

Just wait 'til you can play as Maria.

Birds of death, my friend. Birds of death.

Birds of death, my friend. Birds of death.

Correction: DOVES of death.

Also: Maria is essentially a veiled insult at the player for not being man enough to beat the game as Richter. As the game's Easy Mode, Maria Mode is essentially ridiculing you by making you complete the game as a 15 year old girl in a frilly pink dress using the Power of Love And Friendship while delivering super sugary versions of Richter's cutscenes.

And yet the insult totally backfires because this is one badass little girl.

No, but she's specifically weaponizing a universal symbol of peace and goodwill into an unstoppable force of terror, death, and destruction.
Birds of death is accurate.
But DOVES of death tells the whole horror.

12 year old girl actually, as she is 17 in SotN  ;)

Well, I beat the game and played all the scret stages and resuced all the prisoners. Only things I didn't do yet was get the 50 heart powerup, took a alternate bottom route on level 5' (It still leads you to the main path), didn't buy any boss demos, and I didn't play as Maria. I'm guessing the last 4 percent is beating the game with Maria?
