Feed the Children-type commercials with sad children looking at the camera, or ASPCA-type commercials with sad dogs and cats looking at the camera?

Neither.

I have enough trouble feeding myself, keeping the landlord happy, keeping gas in the car, and not falling behind on my classes to really have time to worry about either cause with my wallet.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

cant say any, I hate kids, and i could be considered a saddist, but the earth needs people to die of natural selection, or else over population will ensure, the animals maybe, but some people should have their animals spade, so they dont have babies, that could potentially not have a home

Many people would label this a cold way of thinking, but I view it as perfectly logical. Logic isn't always pretty.

"Logic" isn't always correct either. Many cultures in the past, both recent and ancient, have had forms of "logic" which they felt helped the greater good but were more or less just selfish and/or barbaric.

True. Logic changes with the times, as do many things.

But empathy states that if you have so many people the planet is straining to support them as is... you... make more people for some reason.
Logic states that if you have so many people the planet is straining to support them as is... you might want to consider letting nature take it's course for a while.

That said, I don't want anyone thinking I'm a dastardly supervillain or anything, curling my eeeeeeeevil mustache around one finger.

There just is no way to go about the matter of natural selection as it applies to humans without seeming the villain these days. I'm sorry that for some to succeed and survive, others must fail and die. I really am. But that's the way nature has worked since, well, forever; and that some people think that mankind can best nature is kind of "idealistically foolish".

That said: I am all for supporting victims of man-made catastrophes and atrocities. Some African warlord carving up women and children with machetes? Bring that jerkoff down. Some dictator hoarding all the food for himself in a famine? Share up, buddy. Flooding due to a ruptured dam? Let's get those survivors somewhere to stay with food and clean water.

Just because natural selection works doesn't mean we should allow people to suffer at the hands of their fellow man.

And there's my speech and the end of my contribution to this thread, as for me (and I'm sure for others) this is a touchy subject, and I don't want to start any trouble.

I don't trust most charities with enough capital to sponsor a TV advertisement. You don't know if your money will ever reach the cause.

Of every dollar sent to a big name charity, only half ever makes it to the intended destination. And I bet you that every dollar that a Christian charity receives, half of it of that goes to fund the Vatican.

Neither directly affects me (I hardly watch tv anymore), but human beings matter more, obviously. I don't have a high opinion of most charity organizations due to them getting abused, though.

And if kids starving is natural selection, it means nature has turned into a retard. I'm not saying you've got to feel responsible, but developing countries are the ones that pay the price for this abundance we enjoy and most of those people did nothing to deserve that. If the same happened on this side of street, everyone would be tearing up. I don't feel like bullshitting myself that being born and dying with nothing is natural.

Let the children starve to death or die of disease. But I won't do anything for the animals, either. The little puppies and kitties make me sad though. The skinny African kids don't do a thing to me, though. Our country doesn't want to feed its own people, but their continent doesn't even want to care for its own people. That, and the money they spent filming and advertising those starving kids could have been used to feed them.

I don't know which one is sadder, but the animal ones could be better if they didn't have Sarah McLachlan and her annoying song playing in the background.

But seriously, I kind of look at stuff like this with a skeptical eye, anyway. I don't know which places are legit, but honestly, I guess I haven't made much of an effort to find out either. The only stuff I've really given to is when retail stores ask if you want to contribute a dollar or so to a charity when you're checking out.
