Title: The castle calls my name
Post by: Belmont legacy on November 06, 2017, 12:34:55 PM
So after recently finishing Castlevania 1-4, Adventure Rebirth and Belmont's revenge, it's only natural to get burned out on a series which is sadly what has happened to me with this amazing series and I vowed a hiatus on Castlevania due to burn out, excessive work hours, and other games not receiving much needed attention (the evil within 2 and fire emblem path of radiance) but I still can't shake off that feeling that I have unfinished business with Castlevania and my binging I had going on with it. Last game I was playing was lament of innocence and I just got my copy of curse of darkness in too. So this brings me to my question. What game got you all back into this series after a hiatus or break?

Never did have a hiatus with CV. Not even what LoS nearly ruined it for me.

Castlevania Chronicles got me back into it some years back. No matter what anyone says I prefer the remix version.

The remix version was a good play-through for me too. Not as hard as the original was so more players had the chance to beat the game. I just didn't care for the pretty boy, pink-haired Simon. That was an unnecessary addition  :P

Really? I've got the PSX version and they feel the same, down to the wolf boss in the clock tower who is stuck on extra hard mode (only on PSX). The only difference I see are sprites and music.

I agree that Castlevania adventure remix is superb. Very fun and a quick to beat game as well. I really wish I could beat Castlevania adventure on Gameboy but that damn 3rd stage with the spike run is insanely difficult.  >:(

I think you're talking about Castlevania Adventure Rebirth, I was talking about Castlevania Chronicles (Remix)

I don't really get burned out on the series but I do play it more times than others. If I listen to some CV tunes it will put me in the mood or I talk about it to some friends I might want to start a game on something. Also, it depends on what system is hooked up at the time. Sometimes I might play a boss rush mode for old time sake.

Oh there's more then just a simple causemetics job at work in Chronicles. In the original X68000 game, whenever Simon got hit he would be pushed back. In Chronicles easy mode that was removed so Simon just stands his ground. But I'm sure that in the tougher difficulty selections he does get knocked back.

I'll have to check out my version again. The knock back you may be right about (Like Adventure Rebirth Classic mode) but I don't recall enemies being easier.

Apparently the new Simon sprite is wider pixel-wise and more likely to make narrow jumps. (Like the one at the very start of the clocktower level 3)

No I'm talking about Castlevania adventure on Gameboy. The 3rd level has you climbing ropes trying to out run spikes throughout the whole level. Adventure Rebirth is cake compared to the original adventure.

Your first comment states "I agree that Castlevania adventure remix is superb."

Never did have a hiatus or get burned out, however I do like to check unused elements inside the ROM that were archived in sites like TCRF, then return to the specific game(s) in the process.

As for Castlevania Chronicles every physical/digital copy I own didn't have character knockback after hit in any difficulty of Arrange Mode. (Simon still have stun animation but didn't bounce back like NES games nor X68000/Chronicles Original Mode) Is there anypossibility that undumped prototype still present in the world that the content being an even earlier build which knockback mechanics would be different (The origin of such a “demo version” text left in retail version and documented at TCRF)?

Anyway Castlevania Chronicles still holding several mysteries I didn't even know before...It's time for me to document some at TCRF ASAP.

There were a few years that I didn't play any CV games, but I'm not sure if you could call it a hiatus since my reason was that I was a kid who was lousy at video games.  I could play through levels of different games, but the only way I got through bosses was to call dad in to do it.  As I got older and better at games, CV was stuck in my head as "too hard" so I didn't come back for awhile.

At some point later I made a friend who owned most of the game systems that ever came out.  When I stayed at his place we basically played video games the whole time and out of all the games I'm sure we played I mostly remember watching/playing SotN, and CV64 (the two of us trying to get through the area where you are carrying the Nitro was so hilarious!).  Once, after my family had moved, he let me borrow his SNES to play CV4.  Watching and playing those CV titles renewed my interest in the series, and not long after that I started earning money for myself and bought a N64 and CV LoD.  By that point I had become a huge fan of Castlevania.

On a side note, it was watching/playing Chrono Cross with that same friend and borrowing his copy of Earthbound from him that got me into RPGs.  I'm not sure what made me become such a fan of the "retro" theme though...I guess because it's mostly what I grew up playing?

It's a shame there's no video of this. I like funny moments when it comes to folks trying to beat games  :)

I wish I had a video of it!  I don't know how funny it would be to watch, or even if I'm remembering it all very clearly, but from what I remember in my mind we were rolling around in hysterics as we kept trying.  Most of the time my friend died was because he had a habit of just jumping everywhere instead of walking.  The first time he picked up the nitro (and on several other attempts!) he literally jumped away first thing  I'm sure we were making a ruckus, and his dad came in and watched for a moment.  Once we explained what we were supposed to do (and he saw how terrible we were doing) he said something like, "Maybe you'd get further if you stopped pushing the jump button!"
