Damn, that's really rough.  I'm sorry to hear that.
So far I've not really been affected, but I figure it's just a matter of time before the plague reigns its terror in my neck of the woods.
I hope your grandma pulls through and things get better for you.

Well that's not good. Hope things get better for you.

Nothing major up here.. yet. Still got my two jobs going, though we are being more cautious. We're waiting to see what the Yukon territory legislation will decide. Should be quite soon as the meetings are currently happening this week. If things escalate then they'll decide to have businesses and what-not shut down for the whole two week thing. We can only wait to see what develops for now.

I'm really sorry to hear all that. That's rough.

A lot about the virus has me more annoyed than worried. I feel like the hysteria is largely perpetrated by the media and bored housewives posting over facebook. On the whole, I think the threat is how society is behaving.
The threat to the elderly however is real, if only marginally more than the flu is every year to them.
I have a 91 year old grandmother, and outside of a father I don't speak to, she's the only family I have.
I've been buying her groceries, etc. but it's been difficult because I have pneumonia for the first time in my life, and she can't afford to get that either.
(They poked and prodded me at the hospital, and I do not have the virus. I'm just the unlucky guy with severe chest pain and horrible cough amidst very paranoid crowds at the moment.)

I really hope your grandmother gets better, of all your troubles.

Not much here, other than it being annoying to buy groceries. Oh and the city here wants to have people screened before testing, and they want $50 a pop for each person who doesn't have insurance, which is riling up the locals. That's right, the city wants to make a profit off of the poor, when I heard the tests are supposed to be free.

I don't know what these tests in particular involve, but cultures can be collected via nose swab, so what you're saying sounds ridiculous.

When shit like this goes down, get as much people as you can together and clamp down on it. Get the law on your side too if possible. There is no such excuse for this type of behaviour in a possible crisis.

I implore those of you at risk of losing where you live in the next two-three (potentially more) months in a freeze start contacting your representatives and tell them to support cash transfers. I've long been an advocate of something called Universal Basic Income, but if you know of former 2020 Presidential candidate Andrew Yang, it's similar to what he argues for. Money prior to working conditions. This is something we will need from a technological front, but there's also humanitarian reasons for it. And clearly, in this climate, it's needed for a pandemic.

Demand your politicians back Jason Furman's (he's been an opponent of UBI for reference, so for him to turn is to show this is Serious Time) idea of $2,000 per adult every month for the next three months, and $1,000 per child in that same period. Because people are open to the idea of cash transfers and there's a lot of ideas about it, we have to be careful what we have to support. Currently, this dumpster fire of a White House is saying they support it, but also say it's not a flat amount for people so it will range "based on need." This already gives me pause: I can imagine those unemployed prior to this crisis may not even qualify, making the entire point of this effort pointless.

In this climate, you have to give people stuck at home for one reason or another money, or else you risk entering a depression, not a recession. It may be hard to wrap one's head around, but this is already groomed to worse than 2008, by significant scales.

Wishing all of you well, friends and family included. Hope we all come out on the other side as a better people, collectively.

Thanks, Foffy. Bloo, it seems like things are tough for you--is there any way you might get some of those opportunities back when/if the coronavirus spread subsides? And thanks to everyone here, too. Though the CV fandom is quiet nowadays, at least those of us still around are sticking together. That speaks quite well of us, IMO.

Well it happened. My bookstore job is going minimal so we're pretty much closing up shop till there's a break in the storm. We're still doing book drop-offs for people but it'll be done through our website, and handled by those that drive. My government DDC (Document Destruction Center) job on the other hand is trying to remain open for as long as possible so I'll still have some income. I've saved up quite a bit in my account so as long as I don't recklessly spend (which I don't considering I'm not a spend-thrift) then I should be able to weather out this rough ride. If the situation up here escalates like it has in BC then the DDC might close up as well. My bro's job is pretty much shut down, much to the disappointment of all those that work there. Since they haven't made the income they wanted to or were excepting to, the owners might not be able to re-open if things cool off. Things are damned pricey up here in terms of rent even  :P

But I'll find a way to get by. I have to. Wish you guys luck on your situations and hope for things to pan out as well.

My entire job hunt, which was finally resulting in some interviews after over a decade of fruitlessness, has now totally fallen out from beneath me, guys.
Every single business I was due to have an interview with has cancelled on me, and a few have advised that I "hold off on reapplying" due to present circumstances. FUCK.

I don't like being on welfare guys. I'm glad it's there, but I want EMPLOYMENT, and now my best chance in a decade is GONE.

I wish I could say I'm surprised, but considering how this always seems to happen when I'm on the verge of any sort of meaningful success, I'm not.

I'm just pissed off.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Is it still be possible to find some on-line work?

A bit distasteful, don't you think?

Well, other than being slightly annoyed with all the people emptying the stores, I'm doing ok, I guess.
Still, keeping my fingers crossed for the rest of you. Wish you all the luck.
Gotta get away
